Is the horror genre so dried up that we now must face the wrath of calendar dates? “11-11-11” submits a story of demonic overthrow with a specific gimmick, counting down the terror of times and dates that tie into 11/11/11, a day that will bring indescribable misery to the planet and its inhabitants. “11-11-11” will also bring plenty of misery to moviegoers who choose to spend time with the latest from Darren Lynn Bousman, the underwhelming director who previously masterminded a handful of the “Saw” pictures. Straining unbelievably hard to manufacture a take on calendar apocalypse shenanigans, Bousman overcooks a simple premise, spending too much time on laborious exposition and not enough on dramatic elements, allowing wooden performances and a low-budget chill to paralyze the effort.

A successful novelist with a traumatic past, Joseph Crone (Timothy Gibbs, “Witchboard 2”) is dealing with nightmares, haunted by images of his family’s murder. Lost in a depressive fog, Joseph is helped by Sadie (Wendy Glenn, “Waking Madison”), a member of his support group who urges the author to start writing again. When word reaches that his father is near death, Joseph travels to Spain to reunite with his estranged family, including brother Samuel (Michael Landes, “Burlesque”), who’s formed a church on the property, asking his distraught, atheist sibling to join his flock. As the days count down to 11/11/11, Joseph begins to recognize a demonic presence in the house, haunting the grounds at 11:11 every night. Researching the significance of the date, the writer is terrified to learn the true meaning behind his visions, urging him to evacuate loved ones from the house before it’s too late.

To his credit, Bousman takes the details of “11-11-11” seriously, staging a dark occult thriller that rarely breaks character, keeping on a course of investigation as Joseph pieces together the clues behind the dreaded date. The production’s dedication is laudable, but the material (scripted by Bousman) is an inflexible bit of genre hokum, working a gimmick in the most tepid manner imaginable. Attempting to build a satanic mythology around a special date, Bousman gets lost in the particulars, devoting much of “11-11-11” to tedious explanation, obsessing over information that doesn’t make a difference in the long run. A film like this is better seen than heard, yet the picture can’t stop spouting expository dialogue, with every character fitted for verbal diarrhea to prevent the feature from grinding to halt. If only there was something interesting to discuss.

Considering the overall dedication of the movie to its titular date, there’s really very little to Bousman’s script that carries the concept to a feature-length running time. The story would be more comfortable as a short film or perhaps as part of a horror anthology, permitting the production to relax and simplify Joseph’s haunting. Bousman is determined to knot “11-11-11” tightly, struggling to generate tension with flaccid characterizations, articulated by a stiff, expressionless cast powerless to find a place of utter panic. Weaving through fiery nightmares and scenes of page-flipping research, the script is padded with unconvincing confrontations and cheap scares, dragging its way to a larger display of demonic visitation. Sadly, there’s nothing here that raises alarm, no gripping sensation of impending doom. It’s just a collection of lukewarm actors trading overwritten dialogue about a meaningless event.

Bousman also doesn’t have a budget to bring the disaster to life, as much of “11-11-11” takes place inside the Crone home, with its gothic decorations, electronic monitoring system, and dimly lit hallways. The director orchestrates a monochromatic visual scheme to assist in the unsettled atmosphere, but he’s often stuck trying to make a dime look like a dollar. It’s a small movie attempting to sell a bigger idea, laboring to achieve an epic stance. Bousman doesn’t have the material or the money to inflate “11-11-11” beyond its limited means, making the picture delusional in a way, but not in a thrilling, free-for-all manner that takes something sedate and makes it intriguingly insane.

It’s interesting to note the film is being released on 11/11/11, giving it exactly one day to terrify audiences before the effect wears off (at least “2012” came out in 2009). It’s a shortsighted distribution decision, but there’s little else here to entice potential viewers. As of 11/12/11, the picture will be rendered moot, but it will always remain a dismal bore.

Starring: Timothy Gibbs, Michael Landes, Brendan Price
Director: Darren Lynn Bousman
