A Good Old Fashioned Orgy Preview

3
 / 10
Preview by Brian Orndorf, August 31, 2011

Promising a bawdy time with a slippery slapstick edge, “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy” instead plays it fairly safe, pulling a tired RRR routine (raunch, riff, and reference) while remaining about as enchantingly explicit as PBS daytime programming. It’s a moldy film (shot three years ago), uninspired and predictably performed. All it really has is its titular event, an extended sequence of pure pulled punchery that’s going to leave many viewers disappointed.

Using his family’s summer house in the Hamptons as party spot for years, Eric (Jason Sudeikis) is horrified to learn his dad (Don Johnson) is planning to sell the property, thus ending numerous annual drunken celebrations. Looking to conclude the season on an unforgettable note of triumph, Eric convinces pals Alison (Lake Bell), Sue (Michelle Borth), Adam (Nick Kroll), McCrudden (Tyler Labine), Duquez (Martin Starr), Laura (Lindsay Slone), and Willow (Angela Sarafyan) to join together for an orgy, introducing an explicitly sexual tone to their chummy companionship. At first disturbed, the gang comes around to the idea in a big way, a fact that quickly complicates Eric’s burgeoning relationship with realtor Kelly (Leslie Bibb).

Though it was completed quite some time ago, “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy” fits in snugly with this summer’s crop of R-rated comedies. Loosely scripted and passively directed by Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck, the movie employs constant improvisations, with many scenes focused simply on watching the cast feel around for punchlines -- much of the film is devoted to the ensemble blurting out whatever pops into their minds. The atmosphere is loose, encouraging such shenanigans, but it doesn’t take long before the actors run out of steam, leaning on wearisome vulgarity to make themselves heard.

“Orgy” doesn’t present an inventive script, deploying stereotypes such as the Obnoxious Fatty (Labine), the Self-Loathing Innocent (Slone), the Uptight Workaholic (Kroll), the Handsome Lead (Sudeikis), and the Ironic Neurotic (Bell) to establish all cartoon conflicts, asking the audience to buy this failed ComedySportz team as a group of supportive friends. To assist warmer matters of the heart, there’s more cliché with Kelly, a cheery young woman implausibly chasing Eric around. This subplot is barely developed, crippled by a last-minute heartbreak scenario established to motivate the third-act sex Olympics. Gregory and Huyck aren’t above a flagrant dramatic cheat to position their film in the laziest manner imaginable.

There are rowdy party sequences, floppy dildo greetings, and a scene where McCrudden and Eric check out an underground sex club located in the back of a mattress store (cue the gay panic). However, it’s all just padding until the orgy begins. All that waiting, enduring the crummy riffing and one-note performances, is about to be paid off. Well, not exactly.

“Orgy” comes to a screeching halt in the final act. The film actually goes through with its promise of group intercourse (admittedly, I was bracing for the inevitable cop-out moment), but the extended sequence is unexpectedly tame, reduced to some brief nudity from Labine (of course) and Sarafyan, while the rest of the cast works on their careful hand placement skills while performing some modest grinding. The R-rating just doesn’t carry very far these days. The anticlimactic conclusion is deflating, robbing the movie of its one secret weapon: sex. Without a grand display of debauchery, what’s the point? “Cars 2” had more sexual chemistry than this woefully modest picture. Better laughs too.

Starring: Jason Sudeikis, Leslie Bibb, Tyler Labine, Lake Bell, Michelle Borth, Nick Kroll
Directors: Alex Gregory, Peter Huyck
