A dreadful movie based on a dreadful play--which itself was nothing more than a lightweight twin of Mamma Mia. The actors are all fine actors, but here, the ham is at 11 and quite rancid--and non stop. The film has no center, no heart, no humor, and no modulation. It's far too eager to please, and although it's barely 2 hours long, it's at least an hour and a half TOO long.
Dreadful. Skip it (and I'm glad I saw it for free).
Although the movie starts off weak, it gets much stronger. Strong performances from Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamatti, Russell Brand, and yes, Tom Cruise, along with great tunes make this a fun and entertaining flick packed with nostalgia for those of us that remember the 80's. Julianne Hough & Diego Boneta are adorable together. A few fun cameos for good measure.
Certainly a good film for any one looking "for a good time." Not to be taken too seriously, definitely worth watching once.
I have only known tom cruise to make positively B grade movies and this is another one and he has shown that he not only cannot act -he cannot even sing! As a musical or whatever it is supposed to be I class it as utter mish mash and being kind would give it 3 out of ten.THREE out of TEN
The above reveiwer was either too young or totally missed the point of the movie and the blending of the characters. You could definetly feel the blending of multiple lead singers and groups in the way Stacee was portrayed; and also in Wolfgang Von Colt. I am 44 and thoroughly enjoyed this Musical. It will grow on you as did Hair, Momma Mia and others. Enjoy it for the campy fun it is!
