Sleep TightMientras Duermes 2011 | 102 min | 2.39:1
Having attained enormous creative and financial success with the “Rec” pictures with partner Paco Plaza, director Jaume Balaguero returns to individual duty with “Sleep Tight,” though his sense of disturbing behavior hasn’t been exhausted. A creepy suspense film with a handful of decent twists and a supreme grasp on unsavory behavior, Balaguero passes on shock jumps for a snowballing atmosphere of threat, generating superb chills for those who enjoy a slower drip of danger to their scary stuff. “Sleep Tight” lacks transparent thrills, but its dedication to psychological disease and escalating panic results in a tremendously satisfying feature, low-key but splendidly sinister.
A concierge at a Spanish apartment building, Cesar (Luis Tosar) is pleasant to the residents, always greeting them with a smile, showing interest in their day-to-day concerns. However, Clara (Marta Etura) is the renter that holds his attention the most. Growing obsessed with the single woman, Cesar builds a nightly routine of apartment infiltration, waiting for Clara to go to sleep before drugging her for the night, spending time at her side until dawn breaks. While blackmailed by young Ursula (Iris Almeida), who’s on to the caretaker’s actions, Cesar maintains his focus, commencing a campaign of anonymous letters and texts to unnerve Clara, while preserving his helpful demeanor at the front desk. Eager to take his delusions to the next level, Cesar’s efforts are blocked by the building manager, who’s frustrated with his employee’s tardiness, and Clara’s unpredictable love life, with boyfriend Marcos (Alberto San Juan) complicating the handyman’s intentions. While it doesn’t rework the stalker genre, “Sleep Tight” is a terrific example of first-rate execution, using formula to fashion a compelling nightmare. Of course, Cesar is no obvious monster, but a gregarious man who invests time in the lives of the residents, keeping on top of gossip while remaining available for favors, attending to dogs and absences. Cesar’s performance is one of helpfulness, but his goal is a weird mix of torment and everlasting love, hoping to deflect attention away from his evil by approximating what passes for a sunny demeanor on his severe face. “Sleep Tight” creates a believable sense of comfort around the character during his daily rounds, increasing the menace to come, with Tosar’s performance a superb blend of shielded delusion and practiced interest in the personal business of others, carrying the movie with an expertly considered poker face.
“Sleep Tight” takes its time to arrive at broad moments of home invasion, but the suspense is there, especially early on when Cesar’s plan isn’t immediately understood, watching the man not only drug Clara into a deep sleep but methodically contaminate her beauty products. Toying with her health, the concierge gets a charge out his target’s sleeplessness and developing rashes, looking to insert himself as a caring force in her life, gaining Clara’s trust for future exploitation. Alberto Marini’s screenplay is rich with disturbance, finding Cesar building a fantasy relationship with Clara for his comatose mother, growing to believe his lies. There’s also a question of a possible sexual violation that stains the third act, increasing the discomfort of Cesar’s obsession. The writing is clean and engrossing, using the relative simplicity of the apartment complex to construct a community of suspicious and gullible types, both of which come to bother Cesar and his eroding patience with his master plan of seduction.
Viewers already in possession of a bugaboo about sleeptime vulnerability are the ideal audience for the feature. Balaguero plays the overnight encounters with wonderful creepiness, elongating Cesar’s infiltration to a full feel of agitation, with poor Clara subjected to nightly rituals and manipulations she’s completely unaware of. “Sleep Tight” plays an obvious phobia, but there’s great cinematic command backing up the anguish, creating unbearable tension and horrific confrontations along the way, feeding into an overall sense of violation that’s repellent and utterly engrossing.
