Dedicated Home Theatre Build (Nov 2012) (51 photos)Gearing Up: Paradigm CC-390Uploaded Aug 24, 2011 02:33:31
I'm moving into a new house in a months time and the new place includes a room I'll be turning into a dedicated home theatre. With a dedicated home theatre I needed to get some serious gear! Today I took delivery of my first purchase for the new room: the speakers.
This is the centre channel I've always wanted! It's a monster and it weighs a tonne. Really looking forward to getting it in the new room and unleashing its potential! Gearing Up: Paradigms Everywhere!Uploaded Aug 24, 2011 02:33:32
I'm moving into a new house in a month's time and the new place includes a room I'll be turning into a dedicated home theatre. With a dedicated home theatre I needed to get some serious gear! Today I took delivery of my first purchase for the new room: the speakers.
My 7.2 setup will consist of: Paradigm CC-390 (centre) Paradigm Monitor 11s (fronts) Paradigm ADP-190s (4 x for surrounds and surround backs) 2 x Paradigm DSP-3200 subs Gearing Up: SeatingUploaded Sep 04, 2011 02:34:04
The latest addition to the gear for the upcoming dedicated home theatre. The room will feature three seats for both personal preference and room width but we managed to pick this four seater up for a great price. Each seat is a component and the first three seats from L-R will be used. The far right seat will be an extra for another room. We were after a three seater with a two seat 'love seat' style setup included and being that this was the last in stock we managed to get the four seats for our budget and at 40% off the marked price. The seats are full leather, feature cup holders and are electrical recliners. Room DesignUploaded Sep 04, 2011 18:50:57
This is a work in progress scale floor plan of the room. All items are to scale including the Paradigm speakers and seating I've purchased. Things such as the subwoofer placement will vary dependent on the room's characteristics after acoustic treatment. The screen size shown is 90" - taking into account viewing distance, projector throw distances and allowances to ensure the front speakers are not boxed into the corners the screen will wind up somewhere in the 90-100" range. In the last 24 hours I've taught myself how to use a program called Sweet Home 3D. Not having used any 3D modelling programs before it was a challenge - here are the first results after about 10 hours learning and using the program!
The view of this render is from the front right corner of the room and highlights the seating position, surround placements, second subwoofer, ceiling acoustic panels, corner bass traps, projector location and some mini wall plaques I'll be printing for the back wall decoration. This past 24 hours has been a great learning experience and seeing the room take shape is fantastic. The program (highly recommended!) has been a great tool for working out the logistics of the upcoming job. Can't wait to build the real thing! CG Render: from the screenUploaded Sep 06, 2011 16:09:41
This render shows the view from the screen. You can see the edges of the fronts and centre channel in the foreground. It also better shows off the acoustic panels at the reflection points on the walls and ceilings as well as the corner bass traps on the rear wall. This view also shows surround speaker placement, the decorative wall plaques, the second subwoofer, the AV rack (right of the seating) and lastly the projector location (ceiling mounted). This render gives a better overview of the placement of everything in relation to the room depth. Although it appears the seating is too close to the door due to the perspective there's actually plenty of clearance. CG Render: back aerial viewUploaded Sep 08, 2011 08:22:04

A render of what will greet you as you walk through the door. This one's a good view for seeing the overall speaker placement and room treatment. CG Render: seating positionUploaded Sep 09, 2011 09:05:48
This render shows the view from the seating position. Although the perspective makes the screen seem quite some way away, the 100" (254cm) screen will actually be at just under a 43 degree viewing angle making it fairly close to the THX recommended viewing distance (slightly closer). CG Render: back cornerUploaded Sep 09, 2011 16:52:13
Another render, this one shows the view from the back left corner of the room and details speaker placements, room treatment (bass traps and acoustic panels), seating location and the 100" screen. The 'black lines' around the walls will be DIY acoustic panels covered in material. The aim is to have these panels work in tandem with the smaller acoustic panels on the walls and ceilings (for reflection points) as well as the bass traps to help ensure the room is as controlled as I can make it on my budget and still aesthetically pleasing. Gearing Up: Sub RisersUploaded Sep 19, 2011 02:17:49
Here are the two sub risers I built for the upcoming home theatre. All the timber was leftovers laying around our current house so the only purchases required to build these were carpet and glue. Total cost for 2 risers: $25. Build time: 1.5 hours for construction, 1.5 hours for covering. 3 hours well spent!
They are 16cm (approx 6") in height and are made to have 1" of clearance on each side when the DSP-3200s will be sitting on them. I'll be installing rubber feet and placing foam between the legs before they go in the new theatre room. Gearing Up: Sub RisersUploaded Sep 19, 2011 02:17:50
I tested one of the risers with my current sub in my living room setup just to see if there was an audible difference. Apart from what seemed to be a much smoother response across all frequencies, I registered close to a 5dB volume increase across the board with the SPL meter! Definitely did the trick. Now the risers patiently wait for the room to be built in the new house before the Paradigm DSP-3200s make use of them.
For the record, my current sub has a wider profile than the Paradigms so the riser appears too small in this image. The dimensions are spot on for 1" clearance on all sides for the Paradigms. Gearing Up: Anthem MRX700Uploaded Sep 23, 2011 23:16:08
The perfect complement to the Paradigms - this receiver impressed me big time when demoing receivers and wiped the floor with the competition. I was also really impressed with the Anthem Room Correction calibration software. To my ears it seems to really nail the trouble spots and positives of a room. I'm hoping that the effort I'll be putting in with room treatment combined with the capabilities of the ARC and the performance of the receiver and speakers will deliver a great sound. These cables combine good features and performance for a decent price. v1.4 with Ethernet, gold plated connections and a high density flexible outer braid. The RoomUploaded Oct 01, 2011 23:07:37
This week we moved into the new house and are now in the process of unpacking and settling in. Here's the room which will be transformed into the theatre room. The screen will be on the visible wall, the window on the right wall will be closed over and the entrance will be filled in and a standard sized door opening will replace the open plan opening currently there. Gearing Up: Speaker Cable and Banana PlugsUploaded Oct 02, 2011 16:51:13
A couple of orders I've placed for needed components have started rolling in. This time I've got speaker cable and banana plugs so I'm ready to connect speakers once the room is built! And so the work begins...Uploaded Oct 08, 2011 03:38:21
The first stages of work have begun on the room. Today I painted two very light coats on both the screen wall and ceiling. I'll be doing four light coats in the hopes of having a very smooth, even surface. Obviously it doesn't look very pretty at the moment but hey, it's a work in progress! You can also see the brushed chrome halogen spotlights I installed today. Because the room will consist of various gradations of blacks and greys (trending slightly towards a steel grey) I wanted the lights to effectively create the "look" of the room. With the various pieces of gear and acoustic treatment which will populate the room the spotlights should be very effective at creating some interesting light and shadow areas. You can also see where I've roughly painted out the placement of the 100" screen. It gives a good indication of the remaining space I'll have on the sides for bass trapping and front speaker placement. Painting UpdateUploaded Oct 10, 2011 18:32:25
Here's the result after the third light coat was applied to the screen wall and ceiling. It's come out fairly well. I've purposely left the screen location with only two coats - coverage with the final coat will be sufficient for that part of the wall being that it will be hidden behind the screen! The final coat to this wall and ceiling will be applied after the room alterations have been done. Lights, camera, action!!!Uploaded Oct 10, 2011 18:32:26
A close-up of the light I've installed. A minimalist style which is what I like and the four spotlights is exactly what I wanted to provide coverage around the seating positions - it should also illuminate the remaining areas in a softer, indirect light. I'll be installing a dimmer switch for this light later on in the build. Framing and Sheeting Complete!Uploaded Oct 15, 2011 01:46:07
The window (not visible - to left of image) has now been covered over and the open plan opening has now been framed and double sheeted with plasterboard to make a standard door size. This view shows the angle from the screen wall looking back out through the door opening into the dining/kitchen area.
Tomorrow I'll be installing two doors in the opening as well as plastering the areas I sheeted today in preparation for sanding and painting. Painting CompleteUploaded Oct 23, 2011 07:43:24
A lot has happened since last weekend's update. As you can see not only have doors been hung, but plastering and painting has been completed. Columns for the surround speakers have also been installed. Painting CompleteUploaded Oct 23, 2011 07:43:25
This image gives a better indication of how the columns and surround speakers will be placed within the room. Finally some gear!Uploaded Oct 23, 2011 07:43:27
The moment I've been waiting for! This image shows one column upholstered in black velour with the Paradigm ADP-190 installed. Curtains will be installed either side of the columns and behind them 'I'll have both cable runs and acoustic treatment. Carpet in!Uploaded Oct 28, 2011 22:40:41
Today's progress so far! The carpet is in. Considering this is only my second go at laying carpet it turned out very nicely! The photo doesn't do it justice at all - the colour looks great in person and really suits the room. $300 well spent! Taking shapeUploaded Oct 29, 2011 16:07:16
A view of the current progress showing seating, bass trapping (still to build and add my additional custom bass trapping) and speaker placement. Taking shapeUploaded Oct 29, 2011 17:51:28
This image shows progress as at October 29. This image shows progress as at October 30. All gear is in with the exception of the player (I've yet to buy). The Anthem MRX-700 looks positively miniscule in comparison to the Paradigm Monitor 11s and CC-390! You can also see the placement of the acoustic treatment.
I'll be building a custom stand for the CC-390 and I'm in the process of locating a small AV unit (or building one) to house the receiver and player. Cable management and curtain installs also need to be completed. Taking shapeUploaded Oct 29, 2011 17:51:29
This image shows progress as at October 29. A good view for showing the seating, surround and second subwoofer positions. I've placed an acoustic panel on the door for reflections going over the seating positions. Ignore the cable management (or lack thereof ) - I'll be doing cable runs once all final cabling has been installed and they won't be visible as they will be behind the curtains.Taking shapeUploaded Oct 30, 2011 03:21:43

A close-up of the back of the Anthem MRX-700 showing some of the connections so far. The 12AWG speaker cabling is connected via banana plugs and I've colour-coded and labelled each for easy identification and tidiness. HDMI is connected too - all I'm waiting on now is delivery of my two subwoofer cables and they should arrive early this coming week. Then all I need to do is find a small AV unit so the receiver and player have a home. Curtains!Uploaded Oct 31, 2011 08:03:13
Today (October 31) I purchased curtain rods for the curtains I bought yesterday. I've now started the arduous task of ironing 55 square meters of curtains! A home for some gear...Uploaded Oct 31, 2011 08:03:14
As well as the curtain rods I also picked up this small TV unit for $30 today (October 31). I was after something with a small footprint to hold the player and receiver and I found this. The dimensions are perfect for the gear and as an added bonus the height was ideal to serve as a centre channel stand! I was planning to build one but in this case it's perfect so it's saved me a job. I've placed two rubber door stops under the CC-390 so that the speaker has a slight upwards trajectory. It has resulted in the speaker being aimed directly toward the head of the central seating position.
As usual ignore the lack of cable management. That will be finalised when the room has been 99% completed. Calibration time!Uploaded Nov 04, 2011 22:21:32

A screenshot showing the before and after of my preliminary calibration. It has helped me identify a few areas where I may be able to improve the natural response of the speakers. The good news is that the left and right sides of the rooms seem to have a fairly consistent response so I've achieved a decently balanced room.
This calibration was done without the screen installed. It's just a test run to ensure everything's working fine and to allow me to run the speakers in a close-to-final calibration for a number of hours so they are broken in well. Anthem Room Correction GraphUploaded Nov 04, 2011 22:21:40

... and the finished project ready to hang. At 100" (2.54m) this will have a small amount of clearance on either side when giving the front speakers adequate breathing room. With the 3D modelling I was able to calculate the maximum screen size given the room width and speaker placement - this is as big as I can go and at a 2.75m viewing distance it will do very nicely! Screen installedUploaded Nov 08, 2011 05:34:04
Tonight I was able to hang the screen I took delivery of and built earlier in the day. Installation went smoothly and the results are fantastic.
When sitting in the reclined position the screen is the perfect viewing height so I must've done something right with my calculations! Now all I need is a projector! Front soundstage curtainsUploaded Nov 13, 2011 17:14:48

Today I picked up the last two pieces of gear I needed for the room. For a player I went with the Oppo BDP-93. It's been on my wishlist as a player in general for a long time and with me building this room it was the ideal time to get it! Panasonic PT-AE7000EUploaded Nov 19, 2011 15:43:25
The second item I picked up was the last piece of the puzzle - the projector. I purchased the Panasonic PT-AE7000E which is the local (Australian) version of the PT-AE7000U. It was only officially announced 3 days ago by Panasonic Australia so I'm definitely one of the early adopters! Panasonic PT-AE7000EUploaded Nov 19, 2011 15:43:26

This is the results after installation. Naturally photographs of the screen will never be accurate and give justice to the on-screen image but it gives a good indication of the performance. I gave the projector a calibration and I'll have someone come in and do a full calibration in a few weeks time but for now it's looking great.

Part of my planned second stage for the room was to build a riser to elevate the seating. Over this past weekend I commenced work on the job. Saturday was for measuring and building the frame. This is the finished result. Stage 2: RiserUploaded Jan 15, 2012 15:01:28
Following framing on Saturday I sheeted the riser. The hole in the top is for wiring for the electric recliners.
The carpet (matching the floor of the room) has been ordered so next weekend will be underlay, carpeting and then finishing with stair treads to protect the corners. Riser InstalledUploaded Jan 20, 2012 19:53:34
Friday evening I carpeted and installed the stair tread for the riser. This morning I installed the riser and ran all the wiring for the electric recliners though it. Came up very nicely considering it's my first go at making something like this. The stair tread is mainly on there to protect the carpet on the edges. I've just got to put some caps on the corners to tidy it up and protect the edges. Riser InstalledUploaded Jan 20, 2012 19:58:21

This view shows the seating and riser as seen through the entry to the room. It gives an idea of the height difference the riser has made. FYI, the colour of the carpet seen in this image is fairly close to it's natural colour (though a little dark because of the lack of direct light). The other images show it to be far lighter than it actually is. Ratings
