Here it is, My new DIY 120" wide(130" diagonal) 2.35:1 Acoustically Transparent screen. The screen material is Center Stage XD(1.2 gain) from Seymour AV. I built the frame and wrapped it in velvet myself. The whole assembly of the screen took about 6 hours start to finish and cost a total of $330 for everything. (Uploaded Sep 26, 2009 07:11:30)

DIY Masking panels for 16x9 content

What made this a tough task is that they too needed to be acoustically transparent like the screen, yet still absorb light. Stretchy velvet when stretched to it's limits, becomes acoustically transparent and still does a great job at absorbing light. (Uploaded Sep 26, 2009 07:11:40)

Very nice job! I'd love to see some photos of the rest of the room, including the seating. Any plans to fabricate masking panels for 4:3 content?

I really like your setup. I've been looking for screen options for a 130" diag and like what you've done. Can you comment on where you got the screen material from?

Very nice screen. I might have to pay you to build mine when I get a 2.35 setup. It looks like the screeen cost 5k+. I paid $450 for my Draper. Great Setup.

I'm very impressed with your DIY screen! Great job and it works fine as your flawless screen shots prove. I went to Stewart and paid the big bucks and it
doesn't look any better than yours. I took a different approach on the screen though and got an opaque backing applied so that I'm able to place some
lighting behind the screen for ambient room light. Haven't done that yet and don't know if I'll like it or not, but I did mount the screen 7" out from the wall to
accommodate the lighting. I do like the B &W line of speakers as well and use them for all but the sub. I do have a CIH setup for the 2:35 and seldom need
to mask, but I may use your approach with the removable panels when I have an old 1.33 movie to watch. Great work on your room!

I went and talked to 3 B&W dealers and they all came to the same conclusion. For my setup which is 100% movie dedicated, the 3 HTM61's will out perform just one of them paired with 683/684. Since I have 2 Martin Logan Dynamos the extra woofers on the 683's would be a waste and the 684s just don't stack up to the HTM61 on it's own. Also, considering my acoustically transparent screen, it is ideal to have 3 matching front speakers all at the exact same height for the best imaging. And the HTM61 is basically the best parts of the 683/684 put together(for what I'm using them for) So it was a no brainer.

About the masking panels, well I used a very light weight wood and made sure they measured just perfectly so once they were wrapped in the velvet they fit right into the frame of the screen ever so snug and they do not move. It's just the right fit so that they do not wear on the velvet of the actual screen frame, nor do they move or fall out.

From those screenshots, this ht looks stunning. I think this is the first time I've seen someone using 3 HTM61s, why did you go that way?
About the masking panels, how do you hang them up? Do you have screws or something?
I am really interested in upgrading to a similar system in the near future, your ht looks truly inspiring

Thanks for the nice comments guys. I'm using a Mitsubishi HC5500(1080p) Projector and I'm using the zoom method. My projector is one of very few that has a nice feature where in the options I can set the screen format to 2.35:1 and then it takes any 16x9 content and it uses a "shrink" method to fit it into the 2.35:1 space. There is absolutely no loss in quality when doing this and it allows me to switch between the two aspect ratios in about 2 seconds with a single button on my Harmony One. This is just a temporary solution before I get an anamorphic lens.

I love seeing an excellent do-it-yourself project like this. What projector (and lens) are you using?
