The Bat Barn

Why? Well, it's a barn, and I wanted to create a "bat cave" viewing environment, from the perspective of ambient light. Also, we have bats living in the rafters of the main house (not the barn - they're a protected species :-). It took about 8 months of work to turn the room from uninhabitable to really quite cosy. Dimensions are 31ft long x 15ft wide x 14ft at the highest point of the ceiling.

The room was recently featured in a video production for a UK AV forum. If anyone is interested, you can see the video here...

and the pits of doom :-)

The screen wall is covered entirely in acoustically transparent fabric, behind which is a thick layer of rockwool for mid/high freq absorption. Either side of the screen wall, on the pitched walls, are panels of black velvet for reflected light absorption. (Uploaded Nov 26, 2008 09:19:04)

Acoustic panels (ceiling)

There are six acoustic absorption panels hanging from the ceiling. Each consists of a 2ft x 2ft timber frame & contains blocks of dense rockwool. The panels are covered in acoustically transparent cloth. (Uploaded Nov 26, 2008 09:15:44)

One of the main challenges...

...was having to design the room around a fixed mounting location for the projector. Without putting in extra beams, or creating unsightly supports, the pj was always going to have to be mounted on this middle beam. On top of that, I had to factor in the anamorphic lens, which is fussy about throw ratio (to avoid geometric distortion), and also height of the screen off the floor due to the pitched ceiling. Calculating the exact size of custom screen to order was a tense process! Fortunately, I did my sums right & it worked out ok ;-). (Uploaded Nov 26, 2008 09:17:51)

cheers guys. lol @ Bill. The audio system on the PC is a work in progress. I finally just ditched my old Logitech 4.1 speakers & have started off with a pair of KRK RP5 G2 active monitors, which are pretty good for the price. Running spdif from the X-Fi card to a CI Audio DAC into the speakers. I think for now I might try hooking up a couple of the logitechs as rears for the PC. I'm pretty sure the X-Fi will output spdif and line out at the same time, so should work. Only problem is, the sound card will mix the surround channels into the front pair as well, so I might have to play around with it.

Oh, and the "HTPC" is just for data storage and serving music around the house. After dabbling in HTPCs as pre-amp and video processor some years
ago, I really couldn't be bothered this time! The PS3 as a standalone blu-ray player is definitely good enough these days imho. Cheers.

 » Jun 26, 2009 02:20 AM

i remember putting subs together that way back in my car-audio days, and i'll answer the other posters question for you one sub is wired i reverse polarity causing them to have a push pull effect, notice ther is one wire that runs from one sub to the other and the speaker wire splits between the two

Turning a barn into a home theater was a great idea, and the final product is amazing. Congratulations on a job very well done!

Very, very nice HT... Question... Wouldn't the (massive ) subs facing each other like that, cause problems by cancelling each other out? Have you overcome this with some sort of phase adjustment?

Looks like it's a sweet set up, it was nice that you included pictures of the barn renovation, I don't know of many other home theaters in a barn, kudo's.

This is so lovely - there are some mightily impressive cinemas on here: but this is one where I can well imagine sitting with the projector off listening to music: it sets me daydreaming how I can acquire a house with a space like that to do one of my own! The exposed beams and the Sonus Fabers bring wood into the equation which doesn't get a look-in in many cinema rooms. A1!

SupaSweet
 » Jan 16, 2009 12:04 PM

easily a 10, just beautiful.the amount of work that went into that barn is inspiring! 10/10

landry_p2000
 » Jan 16, 2009 10:48 AM

Now that is what I call a HOME THEATER! Too bad the scale only goes to a "10", because your system deserves a "15". Good job! A rating less than a "9" is HATING plain and simple.

 » Jan 15, 2009 10:15 PM

Truly Awesome! My only problem is, I would be AFRAID OF THE SUBS SHAKEN DOWN THE BARN!!!? Great Job. You really did your research.

rwojtalewicz
 » Jan 15, 2009 08:01 PM

I would like to order four 18" Fi IB drivers to go please. I still haven't been able to pick my jaw off the floor yet. Holy cats! With four 18" drivers you can easily get 120 db levels at 20 Hz in your listening area. Awesome! Those are truly gargantuan subwoofers! Are your neighbors used to frequent 4.0 quakes yet? That's 2400 W RMS for each (2) IB enclosure, correct?

The wife and I are hoping to do a self-build in the near future and one of my stipulations has always been a cinema room which, if need be, can be above the garage and detached from the house. Now I have something to refer to when I'm asked what I have in mind!

Love the set-up, the ambiance and the choice of wall decoration. A stunner!
