8 Mile Battles It's Way Onto Blu
8 Mile battles it's way onto blu-ray with a very decent hi-def transfer. Presented in it's original 2.35:1 widescreen format, utilizing a VC-1 encode, 8 Mile on blu proves to be an exceptional upgrade from the regular DVD version. For some, this movie might receive a lower rating simply because of the very apparent film grain and noise more noticeable in darker scense, which is safe to say is over 50 percent of the movie. With that being said, I believe this to be an accurate representation of cinematographer, Rodrigo Prieto's intention. Most of this movie was shot using handheld cameras so during many of transitions characters will appear slightly out of focus at the beginning. Skin tones appeared accurate and there were a few artifacts present here and there, but all-in-all... this is a very worthy transfer to blu-ray.
Comparing the 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio, with the DVD's DTS audio track, this is simply no contest. Universal's delivery on audio for this movie is well mixed. Every scene has a unique and natural presence where the dialogue is always clear and never drowned out by ambient noises that will protrude from the surround speakers, although it doesn't happen too often. The use of dynamics throughout the entire film definitely adds to each scene, especially those that have a darker tonality visually, and the use of LFE, especially during the music sequences is very clean.
The only part of this disc that fails is the supplements... you essentially get what's on the standard DVD release, and each extra is in standard definition presented in a window box.
Overall, I love this film. It's real, it's true, and exceptionally well documented for what it was like growing up in Detroit. Even if you're not a fan of Eminem, this movie has a strong story with great performances, even by the 300 extras that were hired during the battle sequences in the shelter. 8 Mile is easily recommended on Blu-ray. |

Everybody wave yo hands in the 313, 8 Mile finally makes its way 2 HD
Great movie, even if you're not an Eminem or rap fan. This movie is less about rap and hip hop and more about improve rhyming. (Even though all the supposed freestyle rhymes are scripted but that's beside the point.)
PQ - Quite an improvement of the DVD. There is some grain throughout the movie but given it's age and overall "dullness" in color, it's very well received grain. Like I mentioned, the colors are drab and dreary, even in the few scenes that take place outside in broad daylight, but that's the way it supposed to be. Skin tones are good throughout. Not really any appearence of digital noise or anything else that could affect the PQ on this HD transfer.
AQ - Very well done. All music hits hard on surround systems with good deep bass tones. The music doesn't overpower the talking either. They blend with a very nice balance. Of course the 5.1 DTS HD Master audio is a huge improvement over the DVD's old DTS soundtrack.
Extras - Same as the DVD, except the bluray doesn't give you the option for the uncensored "Superman" video or rap battle sequence like the DVD did. (Not that I would get it anyways.) I'm still disappointed that they couldn't include the "Lose Yourself" video on here, especially since it was the first rap song to win the Best Song Oscar.
Overall, it's not a bad upgrade from the DVD. Granted there is a lot more that could have been done with it or added. Even if they increased the disc to a BD-50, it would have possibly been a better improvement. Definitely recommended for fans of the movie. If you're an Eminem fan, I'd recommend this as a blind buy. Anyone else, give it a rental. I guarantee the last 15 minutes will get you out of your seat cheering. |
