DNR!
This film is great and I'm glad I own it but God the Digital noise Reduction really kills the experience for me. just look at some of the pics in the review and you'll see evidence of DNR. Faces get smeared when people walk, basically things in motion lose their detail. Too bad because other than some mild EE this transfer would have been perfect. |

Excellent directing, acting, music and plot.
Basic Instinct: The Director's Cut adds a couple quick "cuts" of violence in the movie's opening and extended sexual scenes. Basic Instinct really is the quint essential "Who Dunn it" film with more twists and turns playing on the audience than most. The acting is superb all around and Sharon Stone does a masterful job adding this enveloping and persistent tension with each encounter. PQ is above average with solid colors. SQ is above average when things heat up. As far as sound goes, this is not the kind of movie that demands an intense sound track. What does shine here is the musical score. The main montage is a beautiful and haunting piece that is subtle yet very powerful almost on a subconscious level. Basic Instinct is a true movie of entertainment augmented by excellent directing, acting, music and plot. I have yet to see anything this well made in it's genre. A must own on BD! |

Still shockingly graphic 16 years later
I have never seen the whole movie before now. I have seen pretty much all of it although not at one time. If you say supense thriller this is one of the movies people automatically think of and rightfully so. I was still surprised at some point in the movie.
The video for the most part was good but there are a few warmer (red orange and yellow) scenes like around fire places that show a lot of blocking and grain. The audio is DTS HD 3.0 mbps audio and it does an ok job, although other than the two car chases, club scene and the excellent score, I did not find it a sonically engaging experience overall.
There is a 30 minute documentery called blonde poison that is pretty good. |

"YOU KNOW I DON'T LIKE TO WEAR ANY UNDERWEAR? DON'T YOU NICK?"
I love this movie!. Hitchcock would have been very proud of this effort. It's a very dark and sexually explicit modern day thriller. Stone is perfectly cast as the demented femme fatale and looks beautiful in high def. I've always admired Michael Douglas for taking roles that are against type for a leading man like in Fatal Attraction and Wall Street although I could have done without seeing his ass. LOL
Overall this is a fine presentation of one of the most interesting and talked about films of the 90's.
Enjoy!! |

Nasty
This movie is still nasty, and even more with Hi-def. This Director's cut version is rated R and there is more violence in the beginning and more of the sex scenes afterwards. This is a nice addition, but perhaps not suitable for watching with your mom- like a reviewer before me pointed out.
The Video quality (MPEG-4 AVC) is really good, with nice colors. One of my best looking blu-ray's so far. The level of detail is also good, we se more of Sharon Stone and i don't mention which scene.
As for the Audio is good but i never thought about it much as this movie does not need a extreme soundtrack.
A litte note: Bought this in january from Amazon.com. But my version was defective and wouldn't play in either my PS3 or Standalone Panasonic DMP-BD30 player. Amazon sent me a new disc without cost which worked flawlessly. |

“F*** like minks, forget the rugrats, and live happily ever after.”
By far, this movie has the most graphic sex scenes out of any movie I have seen. But that’s only half of the fun; there are also quite a few bloody killings and lots of perversity throughout. Combined with a suspenseful mystery story, and we have ourselves a rather entertaining yet provocative thriller.
There really isn’t much conflict in the story, but it manages to keep the viewers’ interest through other means, both subtle and extreme. The characters are really interesting; acting and writing are excellent and help maintain interest. Photography and visual style is excellent. Production design (sets, props, costumes) is good; I think this movie was genuinely filmed in San Francisco. Music is good.
The disc has cleaner and sharper image quality than I anticipated. Color and contrast are good. Sound quality is okay. Includes some extras (commentaries and featurettes). |

I saw the 'clean' version in Turner Classic Movies
I'm sure you know the story of BI. Its been around 17 years. While superior to DVD in every way, the video is not a revolutionary improvement over DVD as more recent movies transferred to BD, such as Band of Brothers or Troy. The audio however, is a quantum leap above the DVD version.
The extras are of passing value, such as the Sharon Stone casting videos in 480p, but it constantly reveals how much of a movie is the work of many; Stone is breathtakingly beautiful with little makeup, but BD brings out details that can be less appealing, such as the layers of makeup make her more corpse like. |

A welcome addition to Blu-ray
This is a great piece of movie-making and suspension of disbelief. I hadn't seen Basic Instinct in a very long while, so it was a welcome stroll down memory lane.
The video and audio are very good considering the age of the film and the extras were quite interesting although nothing all that special. If you already own the DVD it may not be worth the upgrade, but if you don't and you are looking for a good murder mystery where sex plays a central role, this is your movie. |

" She knows were I live and breath "................................
Basic Instinct is as close to mainstream adult entertainment as one could get, unless ofcourse you count Porky's, but that is a different kind of story. Instinct made lots of headlines back in the summer of '92 and it was that controversy of a very naked Sharon Stone that helped define her career and make this one a cinema classic. Looking at it some 18 years later, the plot holds up and the sex scenes are still effective and hot by way of this unrated bluray disc. Lionsgate gives over a fine looking blu. Solid PQ and AQ a very nice looking transfer. Bonus features are the normal drab and nothing to informative. A definate plus to any collection, just don't spoil it with the unsatisfing follow-up that is Basic Instinct 2: Electric Boogaloo.... |

Very dissapointing transfer.
Basic Instinct is a stunning erotic thriller from Paul Verhoeven, a director I have admired for a long time. The film holds up well, with stunning performances from Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone and fine support from a host of underrated character actors, such as George Dzunda and Jeanne Tripplehorn.
Video:
Blu Ray has been the first medium to deliver to home viewers the opportunity to see films as they were intended. No digital artefacts or compression, as close to film as you can get. The best blu rays have that cinema projector look, something videophiles have been very exited about with this rather new technology. Unfortunately for us, many studios aren't giving all titles a proper re-master.
Basic Instinct has been given an abysmal transfer. DNR is the main culprit. It is disgraceful that any movie on blu ray should be tampered with these digital filtering processes. I have even noticed digital noise and edge enhancement on several blu rays and it just removes the cinema quality we expect. Sure it's possible the transfer was culled from a DNR'd master, but after so many dvd releases of this film, it was about time Lionsgate or Studio Canal remastered the original film print or negatives. Sure Basic Instinct is almost 20 years old now and we can't expect it to look like a film shot yesterday, but it should look like it was intended, with all the natural film grain and fine detail inherent on the original print. Here we have a film devoid of most fine grain, weak contrast, waxy details, scratches here and there, unnatural skin tones. It has a relatively sharp appearance and everynow and then there is some nice depth to the image, especially background shots of San Francisco. But mostly it looks no better than an upscaled dvd. Sure it is better than the dvd, most blu rays are, but the Region B is a 50g and still can't provide a good transfer.
Sound:
Basic Instinct now has much richer sound and Jerry Goldsmith's score sounds better than ever. However, there is not much surround activity going on.
Extras:
None. |

Good film but too sexually explicit.
The film was ok. The sex scenes were extreme though. I know that this isn't the original and it's rated R but I was watching it with my mom for fuck's sake. Seriously, I was like OMG. Anyways, if you are fine with that go ahead and watch the film, you might like it. |
