Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 / Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade(2011)
CONDUCTOR: Andris Nelsons Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra For more about Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 / Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade and the Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 / Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade Blu-ray release, see the Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 / Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade Blu-ray Review Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 / Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade Blu-ray, Video QualityAndris Nelsons/Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra/Yefim Bronfman at Lucerne Festival is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of C Major and Unitel Classica with an AVC encoded 1080i transfer in 1.78:1. This is generally a very sharp and detailed looking high definition presentation, especially when the multi-camera coverage gets up close and personal with Nelsons, Bronfman, and the various members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Fine detail is very good to excellent throughout, sometimes a bit disturbingly so (when you see how badly Nelsons is perspiring, you'll understand). While colors are very rich and natural looking, Nelsons' dark black shirt tends to dissolve into the background a lot of the time, meaning in midrange shots he comes to resemble a disembodied head and hands moving about spectrally in the shadows. Otherwise, though, this is a very appealing presentation which should please lovers of classical concert videos. Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 / Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade Blu-ray, Audio QualityAndris Nelsons/Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra/Yefim Bronfman at Lucerne Festival features two lossless audio options, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround mix and an uncompressed LPCM 2.0 stereo fold down. Both of these tracks are lovely, with sterling fidelity and beautiful richness. Bronfman's piano has a just slightly muddy quality at times which (as noted above) could come from either hall ambience or a too aggressive foot on the sustain pedal, but otherwise the keyboard sounds brilliantly clear and precise. The orchestral colors are very natural sounding and are well splayed across the sound field. There's also some really wide and varied dynamic range on display throughout this concert.
