"I thought you might be worried...about the security...of your s**t."

Movies by the Coen bros usually don't make me laugh that much, but somehow, this one did. I think a lot of it is with the dialogue and acting, which are all brilliant. The characters are mostly well-developed; I especially loved Brad Pitt's portrayal. The story is kind-of strange, but I found it relatively easy to follow and well-paced. The movie as a whole is quite ironic; I loved it. Photography is great; production design is good (some of which actually looks realistic); music is not bad.

The disc has nearly perfect video and sound quality. Has a few extras, and the U-Control feature.

Brilliantly dumb!

This movie is a brilliant blend of greed, ridiculousness, hilariousness, and dysfunction within a group of burned-out middle aged people who get caught up in a CIA fiasco. I found it to be entertaining and funny. It certainly wasn't boring. This is one of those movies where you don't know what's going to happen next. It'll have you sitting on the edge of your seat and laughing at the same time. The video is excellent and the sound is absolutely stunning. I seldom watch extra features. But I gave in this time to listen to the Cohen brothers talk about their film. Because of some of the negative reviews that I read here, I rented first. How wrong they were!

Coen bros doing what they do best.

Put a group of some of the dumbest characters to ever grace the big screen together, add a ridiculous CIA scandal and an outrageous plastic surgery bill as the plot and you have one helluva a pointless film, but man it's a damn good time.

Burn After Reading

An excellent cast and good dark comedic elements balance out a somewhat confusing plot and very lackluster ending. All around the cast is strong, Clooney and Malkovich were great but the standout was Brad Pitt playing a quirky role that you never see him do. I was quite intriguied by the plot, although it was a bit hard to follow but just like No Country for Old Men, the ending made me wish there was more to it. Overall, this is a fine dark comedy, it has issues but the unique characters and stellar cast kept me interested till the end. The PQ is quite good all around. The image is pretty sharp however some scenes are a little soft, lacking the strong background detail. The movie has a pretty muted look to it but I thought the colors were vibrant and stood out really well and other than a few scenes, detail was really good. Not exceptional but very solid. The audio is also good. It was quite front heavy but the background did get work especially from the musical score. Again, not demo material but perfectly acceptable. The extras are lacking a bit with only three featurettes filling out the entire bonus features. They were good featurettes though. Overall, Burn After Reading won’t be for everybody but even though I had issues with the movie; the cast and script kept me interested and enjoying myself till the end. Universal has provided us with a very good audio and visual experience and while I wish there were more extras, what was there was fine. If you want a unique and wonderfully casted dark comedy, Burn After Reading is for you but I strongly recommend renting before you buy just to see if you will like it.

Burn After Reading

I loved the movie. I laughed, I worried... it was great entertainment.. The end was kind of not what I was expecting.. but, in real life, that's how the government actually works..

The element of surprise

Little did I know that the weakest of plots could be the most entertaining. I'm no fan of the cast nor comedy movies in general, but I found myself laughing at times that perhaps could have not been designed to evoke emotion at all. While the story isn't complex, or all that great, it is weird and slightly interesting. What you'll expect isn't given in the most unusual circumstances, and that's the best thing about this movie.

What did we learn?

I went into this movie with absolutely no idea what it was about. Between the suspenseful music and dry dialogue I was on the edge of my seat the entire film waiting for the big twist... it never came. After to viewings this movie isn't really about anything except desperate people with no resolution. Part of the problem is that it is hard to empathize with any of the characters as they have no redeeming qualities. Being a Brad Pitt fan I was let down by his performance as well as Frances McDormand's, with Clooney giving the most believable performance. The exchange between the CIA superior and Palmer sums it up best:
"What did we learn, Palmer?
I don't know sir.
I don't f'n know either. I guess we learned not to do it again."

PQ: really good

Don't Burn Before Watching

Most people who didn't even see the movie are saying it's terrible. Watch the movie and then give your opinion, not the other way around. I thought the movie was pretty good, the picture was decent, as was the audio. The extras were not too great, overall the disc and the movie are decent. I would advise renting it first, though.

I was expecting more

The characthers are great, especially Brad Pitt's quirky role and unfortunetly for me that was the only bright spot. The other characthers are interesting, but don't offer anything to really take the movie above and beyond. The plot is very intriguing and how the characthers connect in and out, but the ending was absolutely pointless. I loved No country for old men, but for a movie like this you need a decent ending to wrap up the loose ends. In the end its satisfying but it leaves more to be desired.

This movie was certainly a dark comedy, but the only thing funny is the characthers mannerisms and some dialogue.

Rent before you buy. It may not be for everyone.

Not what I expected

I have to admit, I like the type of movies - comedies of situations, if you will, more or less dressed with black humour - but BAR failed to deliver this sort of mixture in a balanced way. There was a number of strong moments and comic situations in the movie that amused me, but there were also a lot of dumb scenes meant, perhaps, for exclusive lovers of Coens' style. It was funny to see Clooney and Pitt playing total fools, but whereas the former gave a really hilarious performance, Brad looked like he never made it to post-teens, clearly overacting in some scenes. Malkovich, in addition to Clooney, stole the show in my opinion. McDormand was hardly better in her role than Pitt, didn't like her part; Swinton was great in contrast.
I thought PQ was very clear and I haven't noticed any issues with it, AQ was excellent for this type of movie - the voices were reproduced very well, and I wouldn't, as some reviewers, give it a biased average mark just because it doesn't sound like an action movie. It does not have to.
There are few extras on the disc, but enough to give a quick insight into key points of the film's production process.

Woeful

This movie was such a massive disappointment - and no not because I'm a massive Brad Pitt fan - I am used to fantastic movies from the Coen Brothers such as 'Fargo' etc and while I know 'Burn After Reading' is supposed to be a comedy the characters were completely one dimensional and had absolutely no depth to them whatsoever - perhaps this was intentional I don't know, but the effect it had on me was that I didn't give a vermin's behind about any of them when the movie came to a close - surely not what was intended. The fantastic cast (John Malkovich, Frances McDormand) gave me good expectations, but not even they could make their characters remotely empathetic - my general thought about this movie - "so what?"

Rent it if you absolutely have to (PQ fine etc, it should be for a brand new movie) but don't buy in my opinion - there are much better movies out there you could spend your money on.

???

This movie bored me so terribly that i almost fell asleep. This is a smart movie about dumb people. The
only thing that was remotely funny about the movie was Brad Pitt's role. The PQ and Audio were both
really good. This is good disc but a bad movie :~( give this a rent first before adding it to the
collection.
