Disappointing
I had high hopes for this film but utterly disappointed.
This film was in search of a direction. Not sure if it wanted to be an ode to Chess Records or not? The concept was ok, the delivery was lacking. I usually like Jeffrey Wright but i'm sorry he didn't work as Muddy Waters nor did Beyonce as Etta. I don't know, maybe i'm just used to a particular bio film but this just didn't work for me.
As for the video, this one is not going to be accused of being sharp. This is again one of those highly processed looking films that lacks fine picture detail. It's not impressive looking at all.
The audio is a big disappointment. For a music based film, the music wasn't well definite in the mix, there was very little ambient moments that I found in the film.
Overall disappointing. |

High Expectations
Like davcole, I had high expectations for the movie, but I wasn't too disappointed.
This movie is for gut-bucket blues fans. I thought the movie was very informative. The flow of the movie was very choppy. The performances were okay-Jeffrey Wright was pretty good. Beyonce's delivery of Etta James was too 'light and fluffy' for someone that was/is gritty and full of vinegar(so to speak).
The video was unimpressive-nothing outstanding. The audio could have been better. The surrounds are hardly used(lightly used for enviromental purposes). Majority of the music was front speaker driven with enough bass to make it interesting....overall the movie was just okay. |

Saw this and was let down
Pretty pedestrian flick. Netflix rental at best. Not a film with replay value, and I love the blues. Audio was substandard for a blu-ray transfer. |

"Trust in me" and in must of these reviews
Movie - I couldn't agree more with (Davcole) on his review. I enjoyed the movie simply for the legends and there music. This film should have been epic like the movie (Ray) They should have made a film for each artist. Muddy alone is a two hour film. he's is the real King. What I got out of this film was more of a tribute to Chess Records. But poorly delivered and directed. The casting was ok. I think they could have dug a little deeper. But from the looks of it. that might be asking to much. I'm just glad it was done. These are legends that need to be recognized. I'm just disappointed the way it was directed.
PQ - Well this has to be the first time I thought an amateur was behind the camera. Because I'd find times where the picture would be clear and sharp to all of a sudden lose focus. and I mean Blurry Focus. But for the most part the PQ's were decent. Nothing mind blowing. It had clarity, good color, Detail and decent frame rate.
AQ - again agree with the rest of the reviews. to low no deep heart felt sound. a little hallow at times.
Overall - I'm a big Biography buff. So I still was appreciative of the making of the film. So I'd say definitely rent it. I'm not gonna go as far as saying Forgettable. I find it to be replay able. Just not sure if I'd purchase it yet! |

Should've been called Oldsmobile Records
A movie about a legendary music studio feature such artists as Muddy Waters, Etta James, Little Walter, and Chuck Berry should be pretty interesting. Instead we are given a movie that focuses far too much on all of them to be at all insightful about any of them. IDK if this movie should have been about Leonard Chess, Muddy Water, Etta James, or Chuck Berry, but I do know that it doesn't work trying to be about all of them. Jeffrey wright does a good job as Muddy Waters, but he is the only actor who stands out. I just wish this movie could have found a centerpiece off of which these other characters to shine.
The transfer on this release is ok but never soars above the material. |
