great, great movie
this movie really is worthy of the praise it has received, i was a little disappointed
that it was not even a best picture nominee as it was much better than half the
movies nominated (little miss sunshine? . . . come on). but the reviews are
almost all positive and it is undoubtedly one of the best movies of 2006. the story
is basically an apocalyptic tale where in the future mankind can not have children
and as a result people lose hope and the human race teeters on the brink of
extinction. This simple plot is woven with such skill and grittiness that the movie
actually feels real, as if the viewer lives in this depressing world. however, what
stood out most for me the first time, and still does, is the extraordinary special-
effects and stunt work that just blend seamlessly into the film. the chase
sequence in the woods is amazing (the bike stunt in particular) and of course
the ending battle scenes amaze as well. finally, the amazing camerawork used
in the action scene adds that final bit of grittiness to a sci-fi film that actually
feels brutally authentic. every bit of this movie works and i can't think of a
single thing wrong with it.
the blu ray is equally amazing. the picture is flawless in my eyes, the grittiness
is absolutely intended and works so effectively. i actually prefer this grittiness in
movies and these types of movies just look so much better on blu ray. the
sound is phenomenal as well, the explosions will blast your subwoofer
appropriately, gunfire sounds excellent and dialogue is always crisp. the weird
music in select scenes sounds great as well. the extras are good but are the
same as those found on the original dvd which wouldn't be bad except that
they remain in standard definition.
overall, just a phenomenal movie made so much better by blu ray. |

What an amazing accomplishment
This isn't just a great film...this is a Really really great film. Deserves to take on the future admiration of films such as Blade Runner and Clockwork Orange. A masterpiece that I think will truly stand the test of time.
The pq is unbelievable!! This movie really shines in High Def and the cinematography and camera filtering or whatever they use is incredible. Lots of depth.
Also one of the best DTS HD soundtracks that I have heard yet!
This Blu-ray is highly recommended |

"What's left to hope for?"
Loosely based on PD James' novel "Children of Men," this movie takes the original premise (a world where everybody has become infertile) and takes it to its most extreme, most depressing, most unsettling conclusion. It is an apocalyptic vision that is so brutal and bitter that it highlights just how cruel and malicious the human race really is. The whole thing is a downward spiral, and I found it to be one of the most depressing movies ever made (second to "The Passion").
But it is not all doom and gloom; the ending does provide some hope. And the ending comes pretty fast, for the plotline moves at a brisk pace. There are a lot of incredible action scenes, many of which were shot with hardly any cuts; the choreography and logistics of each shot is impressive. Thus, the photography is really excellent as well. Special effects are used so effectively, I couldn't even tell what was an effect and what wasn't (the birth scene made me wonder "how did they do that?"). Production design (sets, props, costumes) is excellent. Music is good.
The disc has decent video quality for the most part; it is a bit grainy, but still sharp, clean, and highly detailed. Sound quality is perfect. Includes the same extras as the DVD, plus some picture-in-picture and U-control content. |

Amazing
This is one of my favorite movies to come out in the past few years. An unbelievable film that gets an unbelievable Blu treatment. I went out and bought this to test out my new surround sound and it did not disappoint. Explosions rock you from all sides, crowds are audible all around, it's phenomenal. If there was a way to score it higher than a 5, then I would.
The PQ is outstanding. It's practically flawless and left me speechless at times. Gritty and dark, but very well detailed. The scruff on Clive's face is just as vivid as the debris that flies in firefights.
If you enjoyed this movie, do not hesitate to get this on Blu. Hands down one of my favorite Blus I own, not just because it's one of my favorite movies. |

One of my all time faves
Children of Men is a highly underrated film, and is one of the best I've ever seen. If you haven't seen it, at least give it a rent...but you will likely want to purchase it after.
Regarding the picture, it is without a doubt a 5/5. It is the best it could be on blu-ray. The detail is just breathtaking to go along with the intended 'gritty' or 'dark' look (matches the tone of the plot of the film). The audio is excellent, though I have definitely heard better.
Extras could be better, but they aren't bad. Overall, I consider this a must-own. |

Infertile Future
Children of Men is one of the best films of the decade. Theo(Clive Owen) is meandering through a meaningless existence in the near future when he hears the news that the youngest person on the planet, an 18 year old, has died. Since mankind has gone impotent the world has rapidly descended into the depths of discord, only Britain "soldiers on." Theo is soon recruited into a war which he has no desire to fight by the woman he has always loved. Their son died years before and their relationship dissolved, but he remains to be the only man she can trust. She needs his help to get a girl to The Human Project, a group of scientists intent on curing infertility before it's too late. Will Theo be able to transport this girl safely to them, while the world around him falls to pieces?
The transfer on this disc is excellent. The image is identical to the theatrical presentation as I remember it and without any noticeable artifacts or "enhancements." |

One of the best.
Beside's being a great movie I though the picture quality and audio were some of the best i've seen on blu-ray. If you don't have this on blu-ray and your thinking about getting it don't even think twice. I'll put the picture quality of children of men against any other blu-ray. It's that good. |

Most excellent
I didn't care for it the first time I watched it on Cinemax. I thought it was kinda long and dull. However thinking over the film I thought it might be worth a rental--- I was right!
This is actually an excellent film, even if it does take a bit too long to tell it's story. A very, very scary but realistic life in the future.
I thought the picture quality was excellent! I didn't see any artifacts and while it's not a pretty picture, it is excellent! Sharpness and fine detail was evident in every scene in this film. Some films are so overprocessed that they have no fine detail. That's not the case with this film.
I'm scratching my head at some of the audio scores i've read. I'm sorry I don't see where there is any lack of low-end activity. I think what may be different is that the soundfield is realistically mixed as opposed to enhanced which we've become used to. While not in every scene, there was a pretty solid surround field and in the action sequences, the sound was appropriate on the low, middle and high ends of the sound spectrum. I was very satisfied. |

"Only Britain soldiers on."
In a most believable fashion, writer, director and editor Alfonzo Cuarón has created an outstanding vision of the not-so-distant future. His 2006 motion picture, "Children of Men," is one of most uniquely portrayed futuristic visions of a dystopic world - our world. A world without newborn children for over eighteen years. Thus, a world overwhelmingly devoid of hope.
Gradual infertility among women after the turn of the 21st century had put the entire world on the fast track to depression, angst, and apathy. Internationally, governments collapsed, and uncertainly and anarchy have become the rule. The only remaining working government in the world, Britain, "soldiers on" to keep a semblance of order, but it is far from a peaceful place to exist. Rather, it had become the global haven for multitudinous international refugees seeking better lives for themselves. The government's number one priority is to expunge England of these "fugees," and the zero-tolerance treatment of them is often violent and even fatal. Propaganda for their removal is ever-present in daily British life.
The date is November 16th, 2027. Former bureaucrat Theo Faron (Clive Owen) is just like any other working-class citizen of England - fighting disillusionment and carrying on without hope. Theo's only friend is the aged, happy-go-lucky Jasper (Michael Caine), who offers him frequent tidbits of wisdom laced with humor. In an unexpected turn of events, Theo is called upon by his ex-wife, Julian (Julianne Moore), a leading activist seeking equal rights for all the refugees, to assist in the transport of Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey) to safety. Kee is the first woman to become pregnant in nearly two decades, and is herself a refugee. Her discovery by the English government could lead to an unsurpassed and extremely violent uprising by those opposed to its treatment of refugees.
"Children of Men" will not conflict its deeply implicated plot with an unrealistic future world and a lot of visual glitz. It does not ask you to suspend disbelief. Rather, it is, in essence, the passionate story of one man's rise from an idle of despair to have a purpose in a world where the only remaining government has gone as far as offering suicide pills for those who don't wish to live anymore, and the only people to find any sort of happiness at all are those who "don't think about it" when it comes to the pending extinction of humanity. Sure, the film shows evidence that technology has improved by the year 2027, but not so in unbelievable ways. Life is very much still a daily grind, but without any hope for the future.
With an impressive 1080p, VC-1 encode, "Children of Men" comes to Blu-ray in a great way. The grittiness of a broken London and gloominess of the rural, countryside landscapes match the emotion of the movie perfectly. Color on this movie is not particularly intense. In fact, it's rather drab most of the time, but this fact is not a matter of poor production. It has a more seductive feel to it, drawing viewers into Alfonzo Cuarón's dystopic vision. Some of the most amazing "single-shot"scene sequences ever created are a major feature of this movie. Toward the film's climactic end, you'll be treated to one single-shot military sequence over seven minutes in length! With amazing digital compositing, viewers will be treated to special effects which have never previously been done so well.
There is fairly good visual detail on this release, but it never allows you to look for long, for the movie is nearly completely shot with a "moving camera," which provides an important "documentary-like" or "live-action" feel to the film. Oh, how I was hoping to be able to give this movie a perfect 5.0 rating on video, but it does fall short of reference quality. It is, however noticeably more visually stunning than its DVD release counterpart, and a worthy upgrade!
Speaking the DVD release, I always enjoyed the particularly dynamic Dolby Digital 5.1 audio on it, and anticipated jaw-dropping lossless audio on Blu-ray. The Blu-ray release of "Children of Men" completely delivered on my hopes, riding on a solid 5.1-channel DTS-HD Master Audio mix. The dynamics on gunfire and ricochet sound effects are provided with such a sense of speed and clarity that I must warn viewers listening at reference-levels to beware of them. Battle sequences fill the soundfield with dynamic, head-turning localized effects. Vocals and on-screen dialog are clear, solidly centered, and highly intelligible, save for some strong accents on the part of some of the characters.
The whole soundtrack has a clean, bright sound to it, providing heightened dimension throughout the surround soundfield, but especially in action sequences. More ambient, environmental sounds are delicately placed, but quite perceivable, during the passive moments of the movie. Accuracy of effects location is very high. Note the dinner table conversation scene between Theo and his cousin, Nigel. Nigel's son is playing a videogame and the sound of his fingers moving the controls pan from left to right as the visuals cut between Theo and Nigel, who are sitting opposite from each other at the table. Many parts of the movie follow the same attention to detail, and are worthy of praise for doing so. LFE is extremely potent when called for. Explosions will rattle your back, transporting you right into the action.
Probably the most noteworthy aspect of this film is its haunting score, exquisitely recorded and mixed into this movie, among other music, such as the progressive sound of "Court of the Crimson King" by King Crimson. Listening to the music alone reminds discerning viewers why they chose the beauty of lossless audio playback, and the overall audio improvement over the DVD release is greater than the improvement on the video for this Blu-ray release.
I generally don't rate disc extras, but I had watched the DVD extras, and it looks as though the Blu-ray release has them in completion. They are excellent.
"Children of Men" is far from your average sci-fi movie, and is one of those titles which tends to polarize its viewers. The future happenings of a world without children are speculative at best, but this movie conceptualizes that possibility well, and the plot and story are presented convincingly. With the casting trifecta of Clive Owen, Julienne Moore, and Michael Caine, it is excellently portrayed, and never dull, and through Alfonzo Cuarón's painstaking attention to detail in this film, those prone to deeper themes can be moved immensely. It has come to be one of my all-time favorite films, and highly recommended. |

PD James Forgoes Detectives, Pursues Dystopia
In an odd Bradbury-esque outing for PD James, she (sorry, he...) envisions a world where men have gone sterile, thus women cannot conceive, leading to the panic of extinction which James believes will only bring out the worst xenophobia in all of us. Or perhaps its simply that she is saying "When we've destroyed enough of this world, evolution will have its revenge."
Clive Owen and Michael Caine were destined to be on screen together. Julianne Moore is always strong and the supporting "uknowns" were all brilliant and understated. Alfonso Cuaron - whose resume of Y Tu Mama Tambien and Harry Potter oddly lend themselves to this project - creates a very realistic not-too-distant future full of very post-war feeling cold colors and Cold War era paranoia. Suspicion is king, report a friend, trust no one, quality of life is reserved only for us - not you.
VIDEO: This is the best Blu-Ray has to offer. If you wanted to sit someone down and explain to them to unending benefits of Blu, this is the film you would select (Quantum of Solace, There Will Be Blood, or Benjamin Button being runners up).
AUDIO: I found the explosions and gunfire too overwhelming at times. The dialogue was crisp and evenly pitched throughout but there were times when the tones are too hushed and I found myself with my thumb perched on the volume button. Nothing severe, just a few moments of overkill.
EXTRAS: Haven't watched all of them yet so I cannot write about them. I personally never care about extras. Knowing too much about "how they did it" can kill the illusion.
12 Monkeys, A Clockwork Orange, Blade Runner, these films come to mind as strong examples of truly believable world futures and I am confident Children of Men will join that list and remain a terrifying, insightful work for several years to come. |

A great film gets a pretty good Blu ray.
This is a modern Sci-Fi classic in my opinion. Not Star Wars Sci-Fi but real Sci-Fi. This film has a lot of heart and class. I won't go into what the film is all about you can read that elsewhere. But I will say that if you have never seen it then you should.
The PQ was pretty great for the most part. The film is very "greay" but all the detail is there.
AQ is fine also. Dialoge was clear and action scenes were booming.
The Extras are all the same from the DVD edition but there are a good bunch of extras. It's too bad this does not have an Audio Commentary. I would like to hear the Director's thouhts on the whold film.
Solid 4.0 disc. Worth the Upgrade. |

How does infertility cause a surge in immigration????????????????
The biggest problem I had with this movie was: how does infertility cause a surge in immigration? I can definitely see how FERTILITY would lead to overcrowding and massive immigration, but the foundation of this plot relies on infertility somehow causing a massive flux of migration to britain (hence strict illegal immigration enforcement).
Since the very foundation of the plot made absolutely no sense, I couldn't take the movie very seriously.
However, on the positive side: WONDERFULLY directed by Curaon, with INCREDIBLE action sequences (there is a road chase scene that reminded me of 28 days later) that brought chills up my spine. I thought the direction and cinemagography were A+. If you're more into action and love armagedon type movies (and dont care so much whether the plot makes "logical" sense), rent it!!
PQ was great, sharp detail throughout and minimal or no grain.
AQ was inconsistent, dialogue was hard to hear (had to put on subtitles at times), but explosisions and actions sequences were fantastic! |
