Chocolate Thai Warrior
For those of you familiar with Ong Bak or The Protector(Warrior King), then you are probably already aware that these movies are entirely about the stunts. The plot is there merely to provide a reason to go from one action scene to the next. Like the other two films mentioned, the plot is just good enough to be ignored so that you can enjoy the excellent fight scenes and terrific stunts. This "plot" surrounds an Autistic girl, guess where she excels, whose mother is buried by medical expenses. As the bills pile up she begins to collect from her mother's debtor's, to say the least, they are reluctant to pay.
The transfer is inconsistent. The interior scenes are quite strong with some excellent detail and good black levels. The nighttime exterior scenes have horrendous black levels, experience crushing, and lack in detail. Thankfully much of the film is indoors and the few exterior night shots typically involve fighting so I wasn't paying that much attention to the grayish blacks. The sound is very good, but I found that the sound design was lacking when compared to hollywood or hong kong releases.
Recommended to fans of Tony Jaa films or other martial arts actioners. |

Chocalate Is Not A Thought Provoking Film, But Fun Anyway
Chocolate does not start out well. The opening 15 minutes are very boring and painful to get through (especially if you listen to the english dub). But after that, it is a thoroughly entertaining and fun ride. The action scenes are very well done and some of the stunts are a sight to behold. It's just disappointing that the plot is so uninvolving and absurd. The PQ was really nothing special as it looks fine but really doesn't have anything to make it stand out too much. The AQ fares the same as I never heard anything that made me take notice but everything was clear and concise nonetheless. Overall, I would say buy it for the action but the plot may keep you from dropping your money for it. |

If you're not a bit Martial Arts fan, this is entertaining, but not a
What is more impressive is that the stunts appear to have been done by the actors and largely without safety equipment. Watch the end credits. It does seem that actors were falling off buildings, bouncing from balconies and landing on the ground. Ouch! |

Chocolate left in the sun has gone squidgy.
Done by the team behind Ong-Bak and Warrior King/Protector. I was hoping for more of the same. It went some way to delivering but felt distinctly watered down and lacking in sparkle. It has its moments, but the plot is messy and ridiculous, the action is a bit slow in places, and it doesn't have the impact of the previous films.
Picture is patchy with lots of dodgy lighting, editing, and inconsistent black levels.
Sound is Ok, but again lacking in substance for such an action based movie.
Not really much to reommend this title. Hang on to your cash for Ong-Bak if it ever arrives!!!! |

A sensational martial arts action intertwined with a healtfelt story
I concur with the other reviews that this movie isn't a Ong-Bak. Likewise every movie Ridley Scott makes isn't a Gladiator. Those films are one of a kind. However Chocolate is too. It wasn't meant to be a spinoff of Ong-Bak. It stands on its own. It's a story about how the imperfect is perfected: an imperfect love that made an imperfect child in an imperfect world of greed, malice, lust, and power. The story is simple but very moving and powerful. This time Pinkaew directed a martial acts movie that has a real story. It could have easily been a tragic opera in 3 or 4 acts instead of a movie. The choreography was superbly exquisite. The martial arts action was sensational. The lossless audio, DTS-HD MA with English dubbed dialogue, was sensational too. The sound was well balanced making copious use of the surround channels. The dubbed English was a bit corny at times, but it was very clear, distinct, and understandable. Overall the sound had the utmost clarity. The video quality wasn't stunning but it wasn't disappointing either. The extras are perhaps a little lacking in covering all the bases. There's some information on how it was made but felt like they held back too. Don't bury your head in the sand waiting for the Ong-Bak BD release especially if you are into martial arts. This martial arts masterpiece is a must buy. |
