The Pride of New Jersey
Though it was never given the credit it deserves at the box office Cinderella Man remains a favorite of mine. Even if the life blows dealt to Braddock's family were a bit over dramatized the first half of the movie still manages to rip out your heart, and it should be kept in mind that plenty of others saw times that hard or worse during the Great Depression. The hole the movie leaves in your chest is then filled with an incredibly inspirational come back, made all the more potent by the dramatic shift. Russell Crowe is, per the usual, an amazing lead, and is backed well by Paul Giamatti who seems to be equally reliable as an amazing supporting actor.
The PQ and AQ are really good, not fantastic but it's a solid showing, and there are plenty of extras (no cast commentary unfortunately). Cinderella Man is a fantastic boxing movie based on a true story, it may take some liberties with the facts but I think it's critical to remember that the feelings of desperation and then hope and pride that the movie seeks to and succeeds in invoking are truly faithful to those experienced by people at the time. I tip my metaphoric hat to this under appreciated movie. |

My favorite boxing drama
This is my favorite boxing drama, I even prefer it to Raging Bull (I know, crazy right?), which is similar in the sense that it was more about the man than the boxer. I guess I just prefer Jimmy Braddock as a character to Jake Lamotta, he seemed to be able to stay on a higher moral ground despite just as bad if not worse circumstances as Lamotta. He seemed to be truly a boxer of the people, an admirable person in and out of the ring. Sure, Raginig Bull had jucier drama and Deniro/Pesci's performance was better than Crowe's, but it wasn't so much about the actor's performance as the characters themselves for me.
PQ was very good, not reference quality and a little inconsitent at times, but still consistently B grade throughout.
AQ was good during fights, you got a great crowd presence like you were in the arena, but whether it was during fights or not, the surrounds were heavily underutilized, and this was disappointing. |

Fantastic Film!
Cinderella Man is an absolutely wonderful film about the life of boxer James Braddock. This film is one that will hit your very core as it features beautiful cinematography, a great soundtrack, compelling story and great action during the fights. This film has never looked or sounded better and is one that needs to be seen by everyone! |

GREAT MOVIE, AWFUL TRANSERFER
I love this movie but I was so disappointed with the transfer
Movie:4.5/5: Solid film, really makes you appreciate the things we have in life.
Video: 3/5: the only decent thing about the transfer is the color, it's not too grainy, but the details on the face, fleshtones are terrible. For a four year old catalogue title, I'm truly surprised that Universal, whose transfers are often top of the line, released this year such a poor qauality video transfer. This movie desperately needs a re-release.
Audio:3.5/5: The sound is fine where it counts, but again, Universal is the best when it comes to audio and this again, is a disappointing effort.
Extras: 4/5: the disc shines here, giving a lot good extras.
Overall 3/5: Poor video and audio quality just makes this bluray a disappointment. I love the movie, but stay away from this transfer guys and yell at Universal to re-release this film and give it the transfer it deserves. |
