Worthy Collectors Edition
Sure, this 30 year old movie has quite a bit of grain. And many camera shots have low depth of field. Still, this was the Cinematography Oscar winner in 1977. It was photographed anamorphic on 35mm (with visual effects done in VistaVision or 65mm). The results look good despite the grain and narrow focus plane in many shots.
The audio track is not quite as good despite the inclusion of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA audio tracks. Some of the heavy exaggerated bass on certain UFO scenes doesn't match up with the somewhat narrow fidelity of the audio's mid and upper frequencies. I listened to the DTS 1509kb/s lossy core.
The extras are really good. I think the 5 disc "Bladerunner" is one of a limited few BDs that outdo this release of CETK. You get a nice fold out one-sheet movie poster with the disc's movie details on the other side. A nice companion booklet is also included. |

Simply Stunning.
Absolutely spectacular. Makes the DVD look like VHS. I saw the original in the theater on opening weekend in Westwood and have owned every version since. The BD is better than than what I saw in the theater 30 years ago...it really is that good. Thank you Sony for the incredible effort. You HAVE to own this. |

The Reason Blu-ray Was Created...
Is to preserve movies like this one!!!! Close Encounters of the Third Kind is by far the best catalog title I've seen on Blu-ray. The movie looks the best it has ever, even though i've never seen it in the theater, i've seen it on VHS, LaserDisc, and DVD and ALL pail in comparison to the awesome spectacle of this film on Blu-ray. The Picture Quality is exquiste, right down to the grain on the film that enhances every single frame of the movie and gives it an aged sense of wonder befitting a movie made in a time that we were all a little less cynical about life and the world in general. Sound Quality is top notch, being that unfortunately I was only able to enjoy the TrueHD track, it is robust and alive, with the glasses in my cabinets actually vibrating due the rumbling of the Mothership at the end of the film. The extras are your standard fare of making of documentaries, interviews, and storyboards slideshows, but it's nice to see Mr. Spielberg's musings on the how he's changed from then to now and how he wouldn't make the same movie if he made Close Encounters now. Overall this is an experience that should not be missed by anyone who fancies themselves a Flim Connoisseur and/or buff. In closing, I would like to say that watching this movie on Blu-ray was like watching it for the first time, and I was reminded of how I felt as a child watching...I was full of wonder and hope. This is what true moviemaking is!!!!!! |

A "Must-Have" title for Sci-Fi fans
The PQ and SQ are very good, grain is present but not overbearing. This film looks outstanding for a film nearly as old as I am. |

Do people not remember how old this movie is? First off, the PQ isn't all that bad, sure...it's grainy a bit....but it's a heckuva lot clearer than the regular DVD version!...and the sound? it's awesome!! For the CEof3K fans...do NOT hesitate to pick it up! enjoy! |

ce3k looks great on blu ray for a movie thats 30 years old that is ...you will not get a better version of this film anywhere ...sound is fantastic (bose home theater system) extras are also great ,,overall a great set for the money ...was able to get a look at BLADE RUNNER the final cut on blu ray 2 days ago HOLY @#%& you will not believe how this looks in hd come on dec 18th |

Great Find
This is a movie every blu-ray fan has to own. It has all three versions of the film on one disc using branching. That alone is worth it. Plus it has an original 70's featurette. |

Got the german Blu-ray yesterday. This is by far the best Blu-ray release of a Catalog Title to date. All 3 versions on one disc, superb picture and sound quality (especially given the age of the movie - it looks even better than some new releases). Definitely a Must-have. |

A Wonderful Tribute to a Classic Film
There really is not much to be said for this blu-ray movie except that it is wonderful. The video looks fantastic and the audio made me jump out of my seat. |

WE ARE NOT ALONE
Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind will take hold of you from the moment you begin watching. An excellent story with great acting (Richard Dreyfuss is outstanding). The PQ is spectacular for being 30 years old. Great transfer! And the audio, the final scene made my room shake! Probably the best sounding blu-ray I own. This blows pretty much any other alien/sci-fi movie out of the water. |

I forgot how good this movie is!
I hadn't seen this movie in quite some time, and let me say that it was better than I remember! PQ and AQ are both quite good, but grainophobes beware! Speilberg approved the transfer, so this is exactly how it should look. I love it. Also, there are 3 different versions of the film! All in all, a great set to pick up for any movie fan young or old. |

AWESOME!
Just finished watching the movie on BLURAY! IT'S AWESOME! Worth my money! But then again, the story -- well next please. This is one of the reasons why it took so long for Spielberg before he won Oscar for best director. There's always a problem somewhere - - trying hard execution of scenes, etc. |

This is a pretty good movie, that I had never seen before. Got it for a good price and figured "why not". The PQ is on par with old films that receive good treatment. The DTS-HD MA track is very good and really shakes the house during the flyovers. I have only watched the original version, but am looking forward to seeing the other two. A good buy if you like the movie. |

Love this movie!
I loved the VQ of this movie. The grain wasn't bad at all and I found it looked really crisp for a movie that is 30 years old. Good job. The AQ though was a little off for me. With my 5.1 I found the voice sound very low and the surround sound pretty loud. My setup usually does this when the AQ is not set right. For example, Transformers on BD is perfect. The all around sound never gets too loud and the voice quality is perfect. CE3K though I just found the difference between voice sound was too low coming from my center speaker and I had to adjust volume and then the actual "sounds" of the movie would be too loud...but still, all around, it looked great and brought me back to 1977 when I first saw it in the theater! |
