Dirty Harry Ultimate Collector's Edition is WORTH IT!!!!!!

Let me start off that I have had Dirty Harry on practically every format including
Laserdisc. This is probably the best upgrade not only for the Dirty Harry movie,
but Enforcer is probably the best of the transfers of all five movies. DirtyHarry
and Magnum force look really good when shot in daylight, but the night scenes
suffer a bit, but that is not of the fault of the transfer but being in High Definition,
the flaws can be more noticeable. Outside shots are very vibrant with color and the
soundtrack has been improved with a little more bass, and being a big fan of
Lalo Schifrin, the soundtrack as always really sounds good. For a film that is
37 years old, the transfer is solid. The only thing to note, since watching in High Def,
it is really noticeable when the camera is slightly out of focus. Note the first
shot of Clint and Hal from Magnum Force when he pulls up the four dead guys in the
car,I probably didn't notice it all too well @480P. But the camera is out of focus for
about 30 seconds.

The sequels like Enforcer, which was made in '76,is the most improved of the bunch.
A perfect 5 for video, night shots, the bomb scare scene at the Police station all look
great. Sudden Impact is slightly more darker, that is probably the intent of Clint.
Dead Pool being shot in the late 80's, looks good, but Buddy Van Horn for some
reason decided to shoot the movie 1.85 which really doesn't match the other four
that were all shot 2.35.

The extras are all good, all previous DVD extras are included. The Long Shadow is
just more up to date. So even the fault of Dead Pool, all the movies get a 10, Video
will have to be a 9. Audio is a 8 and extras get a 10.Overall a 10 because not only a
fan, but the set is really worth it.

Great Collection of wonderful Movies. With nice goodies in the package

The Dirty Harry Ultimate Edition Feature all 5 installments of the series plus a bunch of extras.
It also includes a leather replica of Dirty Harry's Wallet and a hardcover book.

I am not going into the plots of the movies themselves.
Except for Magnum Force, the second one in the bunch.
Harry is up against a couple of vigilante Cops who took the law into their own hands executing criminals which they find guilty. They also kill a cop in the course of the movie. The nice twist of this movie is that Harry actually has a small love interest.

I was just telling you about this one because I think it's the best one in the bunch.

Now for the technical stuff:
PQ: The Picture Quality is excellent for Movies that old. They seems to have been restored by hand. The original prints cleaned and washed. DNR use is not that heavy (luckily) so you are confronted with a little grain here and there and some video noise the the occasional black or white dots which are nothing more than impurities of the print. I still prefer that to heavily processed pictures with a lot of DNR use that make the whole picture softer but at the cost of a lot of details.
SQ: Here they did the most work. They restored the old mono tracks to brandnew True HD Tracks. Of course you can't compare these movies to new blockbusters but surround use is present and handled very delicately. Also the LFE Channels gets work now and then. It doesn't sound fake though. (It doesn't sound like the old star wars movies look since they have been redone).

All in all you get a great set that's definitely worth the price. Which isn't all that expensive. If you don't like some of the movies you should still go for the Collection since you are at the same price if you buy even 3 movies separately.

For every Clint Eastwood fan, or for everyone who loves the 70ties this is a must have.
I think this Collection contains the best restauration Warner has done in years.

So what are you waiting for, go and order it.

Did he fire six shots or only five?

Worth every penny! Dirty Harry as a whole, is outstanding in every "guy movie" way. I am very impressed with this box set. It is a surprisingly good transfer compared to the DVD versions. If you are a fan of the Dirty Harry series it is a must have edition.

Go Ahead buy this collection..............

Clint Eastwood is an icon and his signature character of Inspector Harry Callahan is a legend of cinema cops. In 1971 Eastwood was fresh off his 'Dollars' Trilogy and his hit directorial debut of Play Misty for Me when Dirty Harry was unleased into screens. It was an instant hit and eventual classic. The series eventually spawned four official sequels and a host of 'dirty harry' incarnations from '71 and beyond. To best sum up the series and thier plots it unfolds like this

Dirty Harry - loosely based on the Zodiac killer of the time, Harry is on the hunt for the scorpio killer who kills at random and wants the city to pay him a $2 million dollar ransom.

Magnum Force - Harry is up against as squad of would be vigilante's who also happen to be on the police payrol.

The Enforcer - Callahan must break in a new female partner and solve the crimes of arms dealers who also kill at random.

Sudden Impact - The darkest of the franchise features Sandra Locke as the tormented dame hell bent on revenge for the rap and torture of her and her sister. Harry is on the case but it's not until the very end he finds out the connection.

The Dead Pool - featuring Jim Carrey and Liam Neeson, Callahan is on a dead celebrity list that he must avoid as he uncovers a dangerous hollywood game called The Dead Pool.

Being this is the first time all five films have been released on blu they are all a mixed bag on the PQ front. Dirty Harry looks ok but there is an awful lot of grain. Magnum Force is a slight improvment but offers an average look. The Enforcer comes out strong but finishes up with on par like Magnum Force. Sudden Impact fairs a little better and does The Dead Pool but over-all the scores are 3/5 across the board. AQ and it's truHD tracks fair a bit better on all five films.
Extra's are in full swing but in the end not quite enough to make your day because Clint is no where to be heard on any commentaries.

Bottom Line, this collection may have some PQ flaws, but non-the-less is a good release from Warner Bros and another fine addition to your growing collection.

THE DEAD POOL
Movie: 5.7/10
PQ: 4.5/5.0
AQ: 3.5/5.0
Extras: 2.0/5.0

The package is a box with one other box inside that contains a map of San Francisco, a small message from Clint Eastwood, production lobby cards and such, and also a toy Dirty Harry badge with Harry Callahan I.D. Then there are two folding cardboard pieces with first two films in one and the last three in the other. Then there's a 40 page booklet with images and small commentary on each film. The booklet's probably nothing like what you'd get with the Dirty Harry blu-ray book, though with it you only get the first film.

Well, to sum it up, I really enjoyed my Dirty Harry viewings, and if you like Dirty Harry at all, this title says it all, and I can watch 'em over and over again. Though, personally, I really can't watch any of the last three movies without first watching the first two (though I might can do the third one). But when I don't have the time to watch all of 'em, I can easily stop at any number and be pretty satisfied. You get action, decent to often very good blu-ray, as the are instances when you get grainy pictures (mostly with the earlier ones), but then there are instances when you see things you never seen before. I actually found watching all five movies back-to-back (when possible) is like watching one big movie simply about Dirty Harry with like five different chapters. Although with blu-ray, it's almost being right there in the middle of the action. It seems that with each film, the Dirty Harry character is either revealed to the audience, or you're simply taken on some kind of ride. And while the audio and video quality seem to get a little better with each film, each film becomes less than what you got with the first one.

Well, I hope my ratings and commentary was helpful in some way. As a solid Dirty Harry fan, I was very satisfied with my purchase! But in the end, it is up to you how much you are willing to pay for something you either want--as a good fan would--or just want it in your collection. I wanted it both ways. But if you haven't seen all five, then you might want to rent 'em just to be sure you'll like all of 'em, or at least determine how much you're willing to pay for it. A man's got to know his limitations.
