Stick with your DVDs

Now there are plenty of forums discussions about which version is superior so I'll just skip it. It all boils down to how you like your films, spelled out for you or left up to individual interpretation (I prefer the latter).
Since the original's release in 2001, Fox has had ample time to give this movie the proper treatment it deserves. They failed big time, so I'm telling you now, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

This is coming from a huge fan of the film, the picture quality remains as poor as it was on both DVD editions. Now some may attribute that to the DP's choice of film stock, going with one that had silver in it. The result on a low budget is that it enhanced dark scenes (which the film had plenty of) at the cost of reduced detail. Say what you may but Fox has done nothing to improve this film visually. Purists may argue that this is the way the film is meant to be seen, with a blurry dream-like quality. To those people I say keep your DVDs, unless you're the type of person that must have both versions on one disc instead of two (in which case why are you reading this?).
To those who think you're getting the "definitive edition" of Donnie Darko you're dead wrong. The extras on the 2nd blu-ray only encompass those on the Director's Cut DVDs (did they run out of room?). Fox neglected to include the deleted scenes, music video, and everything else that was on the theatrical cut on DVD (save for the film itself). And to the five people out there with D-Box enabled equipment this film supports that as it's sole hi-def exclusive.

In conclusion this blu-ray is nothing more than Fox trying to cash in on Darko fan boy-ism. With DVD quality visuals, slightly upgraded sound, and a third of the extras, I can't recommend this disc when you can get both DVDs cheaper, and get more than you would here. Chances are Fox will double dip this one down the road.
Hopefully Fox will learn that they can't slap a dvd copy of a film on blu-ray with no substantial improvements and expect people to buy it. They could take a page from Warner Brothers who takes films like The Road Warrior, Dirty Harry, and The Shawshank Redemption and gives them quality transfers and ALL the previous bonus features (if not more).

FINAL COMMENTS: GREAT FILM, BAD DISC

GOOD MOVIE, P.Q. OK!

I really enjoyed the movie, kind of crazy but worth the buy for me. The P.Q. was ok in my opinion, I know it's a old moive but I have other old movies with better P.Q.

Overall, I'm happy with my purchase!

A Great Cult Classic Movie That Could Have Been Better

Where do i start, I love Psychological Thriller movies that have a twist in their plot and make the viewer wonder and think over & over again about life, dreams and reality. and personaly I'm a big fan of this movie so if anyone who never watched this movie and loves those kind of movies then I'd recommend you to buy it or resnt it on Blu-Ray and watch it and keep it as a collection as you might turn into one of the fans of the movie, as it is considered as a cult classic movie.

The lead actor (Jake Gyllenhaal) lived the role and part to the fullest, made the character and his surrounding alive and whatever happens around him is real. which is one of the reasons why I love this movie

For the people who watched this movie previously, if you are a big fan and u never owned this movie before then buy it to add it on your collection, i never regreted buying it since i never owned the movie before on any type of format.

For the people who watched it previously and own this movie on any other format, then either I'd recommend you watching the movie by renting it or with a friend who owns it so it would be easier to decide if you want to own it or not.

Watched it 3 times now and....

I have this feeling that if the standards for Blu Ray are always set extremely high we may not get some of the older movies that I would like for instance "Pumpkinhead". So what I think being that I am a musician for a long time that if it aint in the recording you just cant get it out. I am talking about mixing. It appears to me that in Donny Darko Blu Ray that the original film just doesnt have the ability to get that hazy appearance out of it. There is improvment in the PQ. It is more defined and an upgrade from an upconvert of the original so if you really are a big fan of it you should still get it. I have compared both copies I have the original DVD and this and to me its worth it. I dont think you will see this movie done again. So you better get it now. One final thing though. If you havnt seen the Directors cut then dont watch it. OMG I had only read about all the opinions but I only lasted about 10 minutes I think. It is terrible and isnt even the same movie. I went to the end of it the last chapter, so bad. I would have preferred it eliminated from this Blu Ray version. I am not pissed off I bought it.

This is in high def right?

What a terrible quality transfer. Next to 28 days later or Caligula I can't remember a worse transfer. On the plus side the 5.1 DTS MA track is an impressive step-up from the original audio track. The special features are good, unfortunately they are the exact same features from the original 2 disc version. I picked this up today from Best Buy without reading any reviews and looking back I wish I would have never opened it. The movie is stellar and one of my favorites but stay away from the blu-ray version it's the same as the two disc director's cut.

"Everyone dies alone."

This movie is quite the enigma. It is strange and surreal, but also mesmerizing (much like a "Twilight Zone" episode). In the end, it is an interesting story that comes in a full circle, and it provides some food for thought. The characters are great, and very well-acted and well-written. Photography is slick; production design is good; music is interesting.

The disc has the benefit of having both the theatrical cut and the director's cut, as well as all the same extras from the 2-disc DVD (heck, it's the same second disc). The biggest problem is the video quality, which is quite soft, has little details, and seems to have low contrast. It's certainly not the best, but this is probably the best we'll ever see of it. The sound is okay.

Terrible transfer of a great movie!

The movie (Theatrical cut) is an absolute classic. The director's cut, on the other hand, is a bit superfluous and kind of ruins the mystique of the movie for me. The PQ is nothing to write home about, or if you do write home about it, you're probably complaining. The DTS track is mastered in an absurd manner, where dialog is almost inaudible, whereas some sound effects are deafening. The extras are what totally make this package for me. All in all, knowing what I know now, I would have not bought this as I am not a HUGE fan of the movie. Give a shot thought, a rental for sure.

Donnie Darko is my hero

Ok, so I understand everyones beef about the blu-ray not being the highest quality transfer, but lets
not forget that this is an incredible movie. Most of us on here are blu-ray collectors, so better transfer
or not, I was buying this blu-ray. I don't buy DVDs anymore, and I am sure that most of the rest of
you don't either. I am just happy this movie was re-released at all.

Horrible PQ

Damn it, damn it, damn it! I was so wanting to be the one person who went into this with low expectations and wound up happy with my purchase at the end of the day. Let's put it this way: I returned a few DVD's I was never going to watch to MovieStop, had a $17.30 balance, applied it to Donnie Darko and only had to come up with $8 for this release...and I *STILL* feel like I was ripped off. The image, to put it mildly, is absolutely atrocious. The worst blu-ray for PQ in my collection, and by a LONG shot. This looks exactly like an upconverted DVD, certainly not noticeably better even if it is marginally or technically better. In a practical sense, it looks identical. What a shame! This movie deserves so much better than this, Fox! Shame on you!! I want a Fifth Element-esque exchange program for this movie. And promptly.

Now...regarding EaglesFan80012's comments:

What, so we're stupid for double-dipping a title we want to see on Blu-ray? You forget that the VAST majority of us here are early-adopters. And not just for THIS generation of product. Most of us have hundreds of DVD's. We buy Blu-rays, among other reasons, as a means to see movies we've already purchased on DVD look better and sound better than ever before possible. The only thing that pisses us off about double-dipping is when we get a disc like this one that offers essentially no improvement. Nearly every title I have has been a movie I already owned before on DVD, and I have never once regretted buying something on Blu-ray until now. To me (and to most of us), the difference in quality is reason enough to warrant a re-purchase. In the case of Donnie Darko, this was sadly not the case. But don't be down on us because we re-buy films, EaglesFan80012. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. After all, if everyone who loves movies only bought Blu-ray for brand new titles, then we'd never see a catalog release. So do think before you speak.

A/V Better Than DVD...(Spoiled Fans Doomed to Watch TV Game Shows)

I like this film more every time I see it. I hoped it would look better also; but watching it, I saw and heard a very satisfying disc w/richer colors and details not seen on DVD. Dark, soft focus films are difficult transfers. As a illustrator, I second what the musician, 'MoviesandSGs' said, "if it aint in the recording you just cant get it out" and add that when the resolution is raised on low res pic, you got problems. I think they did well in this copy, considering. Donnie Darko on BD looks and sounds much better than the DVD and offers a better experience. (Just don't expect Dark Knight style PQ) BD fans are clearly spoiled to a fault. These things were movies before they became electronic discs. Films shot certain ways are not going to look like High School Musical. Every medium has artifacts including pencil sketches. Malcontents should remember how bad VHS looked. Revel in what we have and stop expecting Blu-ray to be a magic sword that re-shoots the everything like a pop TV show. Something to ponder; and if are you voting down posts that you don't agree with; Stop it! Each time you do that, you are no less than an internet 'book burner'! Be good.

Not Made For Blu

Great, deep, thought provoking movie. One of my all-time faves, and I LOVE the Director's Cut.

However, this movie was not made for Blu. The type of film used (and I should add INTENTIONALLY used) resulted in a soft, hazy transfer that doesn't fit well in the Blu-Ray format. There is no "pop" or colorful "wow" effects. It would have been better to re-release this on DVD, and bypass Blu all together. It doesn't due the movie or Blu justice at all.

I didn't have high expectations going in because I knew the type of film used, but I still bought the Blu because I didn't own the Director's Cut.

Buy this if you're a fan of the movie, but if you want it just to show off your HDTV and Blu-Ray player, pick another title.

Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?

I love Donnie Darko, and when I noticed the $10 dollar price tag at my local Best Buy, it was impossible not to pick it up for Blu-Ray. I don't know what I was expecting going in to this movie experience, and to be honest, I didn't really remember a hazy look to the DVDs, but it is probably the least beautiful Blu-Ray I own. It felt like I was trying to watch a football game inside a smoky bar. There were numerous times during this movie that I had to ask my girlfriend if it looked as awful to her as it did to me. And on top of that, there were a few times while watching it that I was tempted to pop in the DVD just to see if it really did look as dull as it does on Blu-Ray.

I am sure this look was intentional, but it just doesn't seem to work for Blu-Ray. I love the movie, and at $10 you won't hear me complain that much, but if Donnie Darko's story doesn't move you, don't expect the visuals to compensate.

Donnie Darko is actually great on Blu-Ray...

I really don't have to go into detail about the movie, it's excellent! Now the video is actually
pretty good. I mean it is quite saturated, dark, little grain and nothing comes off the screen at
you, but come on, this was low budget to start off with, you can't expect a great crisp picture
like other movies on Blu-Ray. Plus, considering that the movie takes place in 1988, the picture
matches the mood and time anyways. The picture quality of the Director's Cut version may not
be much of a big improvement over the Director's Cut DVD version, but I can tell you the picture
on the theatrical cut on Blu-Ray is a major improvement over that of the theatrical DVD released
in 2001, which was ugly and had a great deal of grain and dirt on the print. This is the best the
film will ever look and the best I've seen it look, so why not be satisfied? It will never look much
better than this. Audio is pretty fine too, best it's ever sounded, though it got loud and soft at
some parts, so I often had to turn the volume up and down (not sure if this is just me or not).
Never really checked out supplements, but there appears to be a decent variety of extras.
Overall, great film, this Blu-Ray is worth getting considering that the PQ and AQ is the best yet
with minor but enough improvement, and plus you get both versions of the film which are both
great in their own ways, so at least you don't have to buy 2 DVD's to get each version. Got my
copy for $15, definitely worth it at a cheap price like that.

DVD Disc With Blu-Ray ??

The movie was great on blu-ray but the second bonus disc is in DVD. that part was the worst i expected both discs to be in blu-ray because the discs are more resilient to scratches but a dvd can scratch more easy and that just plainly sucks.

Incredible Movie

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I rated the audio so high due to the fact that the
music rocks in this Director's Cut.
I am sorry to see people rating this so low on this site... if you want to be absolutely blown away by a
cult classic, grab this movie.
Wikipedia is a great place to visit after watching this so that you can understand what is really going
on in this deeply thought out script.
Highly recommended!

Could Of Been Better!

Well let's say that this in my top 3 favorite movies of all time. If you ever watched the theatrical edition, then all the deleted scenes, the extras and listened to the directors intentions on how he originally wanted this movie to be. It then makes a case of being an "Accidental Masterpiece"! Which is exactly how Donnie Darko turned out to be. Cause after reading about Richard Kelly's intentions of this movie (He originally wanted Jason Schwarzman to play DD. And DD was supposed to be a Comic Book type super hero),and watching "Southland Tales",I have a feeling he will be a "One Hit Wonder" director and writer. Basically the major cast and story changes is the only factor that made this movie great.

PQ-Well lets say,it is a upgrade over the DVD. Basically where this Blu Ray shines,is all that video noise and grain that plagued both DVD editions, are now completely gone. For that alone,is a reason to buy this movie. But sadly, that is the only good part of the PQ. When I watched this on HDNET,the picture was much clearer and hair and outfits stood out more. Even though the version on HDNET wasn't great by any means,it was a better upgrade than the Blu Ray. I know about the bad film stock they used, but for being such and outstanding movie,it's a shame the Blu Ray does it no justice.

AQ-Well it is pretty much the same as the DVD editions. I heard really no difference between the mixes.

Bottom line,As I mentioned above, this is a upgrade over the dvd editions, and they did a pretty good job removing the video noise and grain the plagued this movie on DVD. And you have both editions on one disc. So if you're a rabid fan like I and many others are,you should have this. But don't get your hopes up for a masive upgrade, cause unfortunatly, this isn't it,nor I think we'll ever see another for this movie.

Donnie Darko on Blu...

Looks and sounds excellent. My purchase was in June 2009. I have no clue what the first reviews are yapping about, Donnie Darko is clean, clear, and vibrant. If I even attempted to write a review on this A+ film, it wouldn't do the film justice. 25 pages would just be too much! Watch it, discuss it, and watch it again for years. My PS3 is loving this Blu-ray. If you want one of the best films ever, buy this.

1080 can't fix poor stock

Movie: Yes, I am a Darko fan. I'm not exactly die-hard--I watch this movie once every 2-3 month, if that's any indication of obsession. There's no point in recommending either theatrical or director's cut, since if you have this blu-ray, you'll see both, and decide for yourself. The director's cut add some very crucial scenes, both good and bad. In particular, his medication is absolved from being a suspect for his visions. This unnecessarily removes a layer of ambiguity.

Video: Lets be honest here. Very few people saw this movie in theaters; the two runs netted only 1.2 million dollars. I don't think this is a poor transfer; I have read in two places (can't find the links) that the cinematographer decided to use a poor stock (16mm I think?), resulting in the overall poor quality of the picture. If the picture is intentionally poor, then the criteria should be faithfulness. So unless it is rereleased in theaters, only those involved know what the master copy looks like.

Extras: The two documentaries were very unremarkable. Also, Amazon delivered "The Director's Cut" as opposed to "Collector's Edition." I don't think there's any worthwhile difference. The cover art is *slightly* different (you won't notice unless you read this). The list of supplements are the same as well. The second disc is a DVD, which makes sense if they ran out of space on the Blu-ray but don't have enough material to cover a second Blu-ray, but still feels like I'm cheated.

If anyone know the specific differences between "the Director's Cut" vs "Collector's Edition,", please let us know!

This is an example of a transfer that is a disaster. Plain and Simple. I love the movie, so im not saying dont buy it if your not a fan, but dont have high hopes for a knockout PQ quality
