May The Force 10 From Navarone Be With You
It's a title Harrison Ford might appreciate. You can file this movie under guilty pleasure for me.
PQ for this film is mediocre. There are very few scenes that are sharp looking. Most scenes contain very little detail. I had seen this movie twice in the theaters when I was a kid, I think the blu-ray version does a good job of looking like it did in the theater, grain and all. If you're looking for some eye popping out door shots you're not going to find them here on this blu-ray. I wasn't really expecting too much PQ wise so I guess I'm not disappointed.
AQ was pretty good, again we're talking about a 1978 film. So don't expect it to rock your home surround system.
Even though this is an improvement over the dvd, it's not going to be a purchase me. I'll stick with a rental. |

Guilty pleasure less than perfect on BD, but still enjoyable romp
I first saw this movie in the theater over three decades ago and it has remained one of my favorite guilty pleasures over the years. With those fond memories I was shocked when I saw the atrocious DVD release of the movie in the late 1990s with niches, scratches and dirt all over the print.
Thankfully the BDs PQ though hardly reference quality is free of all the dirt and scatches that are on the DVD but is somehat average. There are scenes that are sharp and defined and then there are scenes that are soft and with a large degree of grain. I believe the reason for this however is the original source product so I cannot fault the transfer itself. Overall I did not find the transfer distracting and this is certainly the best the movie has ever looked on the home entertainment market.
I thought the AQ was actually quite good though I am not so much an audio nerd as a picture nerd. I had no issues with the audio quality.
Where this BD does disappoint is the special features with just the trailer of the movie. I was not surprised by this particularly since this movie has never been accompanied by a large number of extras but at least MGM included one of its trivia booklets with the DVD release (which I kept when I gave away my DVD copy to my girlfriends father). Considering Guy Hamilton has recorded such entertaining audio commentaries in the past its a shame he has never done so for Force 10.
It was unthinkable for me not to pick this BD up even with its issues. If you have never seen it I would recommend a rental first (or wait until the price comes down on Amazon marketplace). |

Jaws...
Starring a guy from Jaws and a guy with a scar on his Jaw fighting a guy who once played a character named Jaws. Force 10 from Navarone is an entertaining war actioner, the type of movie that Hollywood just doesn't seem to make anymore. While nothing here is all that extraordinary, Robert Shaw and Harrison Ford do an admirable job taking us along an entertaining journey into WWII Yugoslavia.
The transfer on this disc is a mess. It's improved color balance and consistency is about all that I can say in favor of this mediocre release. The audio quality receives a notable bump to DTS-HD MA, but this film doesn't take much advantage of it.
Recommended for Fans of Harrison Ford or those nostalgic for a classic Hollywood war actioner. |
