Great movie BUT...
I've gone from VHS to DVD and now to Blu. The PQ difference from DVD to Blu is unreal. During the very first few minutes of the film it flickers. No worry because thats the last time this takes place. The level of detail on Blu is remarkable.
Now for the negative... Sound.
I have watched the DVD LOTS. The DTS-HD track is very QUIET. The volume on the amp will have to go UP. Yes the audio is cleaner than the DVD but there is MUCH less going on in the surrounds on Blu. The battle scene and ALL of the music have more presence on the DVD. If you have the DVD play the part when the jets fly over. Their basicly gone from the surrounds on the Blu-ray release. Even the music in the front L&R on Blu sound more like ambiance than stage presence. This release is CENTER channel dialog driven.
Still LOVE this movie and would buy it anyway JUST for the picture improvement. |

Forrest Gump where's the surround sound?
I saw this in the theater when it came out and I've had this on VHS, then DVD and now the Blu-Ray. The PQ is tops, in fact I think it ever looked better, but there is no surround sound - none nada, zilch. The VHS and the DVD did have a great surround field. Major disappointment - could it be a defective BD? It looks like another reviewer BluMood has the same isse with the sound as I do. |

Run out and get this disc, Run!!
Tom Hanks stars as the titular simpleton who stumbles through modern American history. What makes Forrest Gump so endearing is Hanks' beautiful and complex portrayal. He easily could have made Forrest into a charicature, instead we are presented with a complex and moving portrait of man making the best of the life he has.
The transfer on this disc is terrific, in fact the increased resolution brings some of the dated special effects into such clarity that the slight errors are more noticeable. The audio is equally well represented.
This is one of my favorite films, a comedic melodrama reminiscent of Capra. Highly Recommended. |

The treatment it deserved
Forrest Guup got a nice transfer that it was due to deserve. This was a hugely popular movie and people forget how popular it was overseas. Who could forget the "Forrrest Gump" suite? The transfer is good and clean and once you get past the opening scene, the detail increases where you can see the texture of dirt, roads, wood and clothing. I wouldn't call this a reference transfer because the colors seem a bit faded and there was some frame jitter present. Its amazing though, how good a low budget film like Omega Man can look on Blu-ray if its done right. If Paramount had put the kind of effort into this movie that Warner does, then it could have been a reference transfer. Overall, its a three times improvement over the standard DVD in detail and the audio is much improved.
This is just the kind of movie where the story, acting and directing and sound track come together for that special movie magic. Pleased with the transfer overall. Paramount did not disappoint with this one. |

Excellent movie with a faithful transfer
Forrest Gump is a classic movie that never gets old - it's a clever mixture of comedy and drama flavoured with the important U.S. historical moments and cultural scene from 1950s to 70s. The movie's highly acclaimed visual effects are timeless, thanks to the extremely thought-out production from ILM. The *subtle* mix of digital manipulation and real acting lets the movie feel natural and human - this is how it should be done!
The PQ is very film-like without noticeable digital processing. The transfer feels very faithful to the original source. The image is not the sharpest possible and has a few specks to annoy the perfectionists, but call me crazy, I think this only adds atmosphere to the movie! The camera work is brilliant: from what I can remember, there is only one noticeable soft scene in the whole movie (Forest and Jenny walking near the Thomas Jefferson Memorial in Washington).
The sound mix is very front heavy, clear and well balanced. There is virtually no action from the rear channels, but it doesn't really matter since Forrest Gump is not an action movie. I have read that the sound designer Randy Thom and director Robert Zemeckis wanted to have a simple soundscape with minimal rear action, because the the story alone is so powerful and captivating. However, as other reviewers have stated, the volume level is pretty low compared to other Blu-ray movies. Perhaps the unnecessarily loud Vietnam war scene has got something to do with it: there is a huge increase in the sound during the scene, leaving the rest of the mix sounding unnecessarily quiet.
Despite the minor flaws this Blu-ray is a great addition to your collection. It's not sterile or perfect, but retains the feeling of the movie/story very well. That's the most important thing in my opinion. |

My GF even noticed the PQ
I own this title on VHS, laser disc, DVD and now Blu-ray. The PQ of this movie is outstanding compared to its counterparts. I cannot comment on the audio since I am using my TV speakers only, but I can honestly say that if you are a fan of this film that the PQ of this title alone should more then compensate for the supposed lacklustre audio. |

Blu-Ray is like a box of chocolates.....you never know what your gonna
I was in line at midnight to pick this up, after highly anticipating this release. All i can say is that this is a must own title. Blown away by the PQ and AQ. Truly a masterpiece and in my opinion, a reference disc for sure. |

A classic that is great on Blu
This has always been a favorite of mine. Tom Hanks is awesome in it, and who doesn't smile at little Haley Joel Osment as Forrest's son? Talk about cute!
Picture quality was surprisingly great. Very sharp, and the colors popped.
Audio quality was a solid 5. The chopper scene really rocked my subwoffer! |

Worth the wait
Classic film! One of my all time favorites gets an excellent high def transfer. Picture quality is sharp and vibrant. I compared the blu in 1080p to the 480i DVD and WOW! Complete improvement in detail and all around picture quality. The sound is Great as well. I haven't watched all of the extras yet but from what I have seen they are plentiful. All around great buy. |

Forrest Gump Is Blu...
The UPS man delivered this @ 10am yesterday, and I was @ work squirming with excitement.
Since walking out of the theater after the film 15 years ago, and buying the DVD a few years back, and then setting up a great 5.1 home theater system, then adding the Blu Ray player a couple of weeks ago solely based on a.) EASY RIDER 40th Anniversary Blu release, and b.) the upcoming 62 track live anthology from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers ( 5.1 in Blu ONLY )...I was THRILLED to be reminded of this release, which I saw was coming a while back, but had obviously forgotten.
The picture is bright and colorful, a very good transfer, and the DTS HD Master audio is superior. As soon as the helicopter comes into Viet Nam, EVERYTHING is amped up a notch !!! I couldn't be happier, or more satisfied. THANK YOU Paramount. |

When buying bluray its like buying a box of chocolates- you never know what youre gonna get. Thats why there are reviews. A great movie, a little far-fetched but still good. I almost didnt buy the bluray but then bought it last-minute. Glad I did! A GREAT TRANSFER. Everything looks and sounds fantastic. Alot of extras. Definitely worth buying. Highly recommended.
