A Mature Endeavour for Apatow.

I Loved "Funny People". It's one of those movies that goes back to the Cameron Crowe esque films that are really lacking in today's Hollywood. The film is a drama and is the most personal and mature film that Apatow has done and the result is quite impressive. The film shows just what Apatow is capable of as a director, stretching his skills and giving us something different. I'm glad he changed things up for his 3rd film, as much as I like "40-Year Old..." and "Knocked Up", doing another potty humor film was getting really tiring and redundant. Performances in the film are REALLY well done. Sandler is good in comedies but it's great to see him in dramas as well. Just watch the scene where he vents out to Rogen's character; heartbreaking! Rogen is likable and both him and Sandler have a chemistry that was really nice to watch as the film progressed. Leslie Mann was impressive, steering away from the loud mouth woman to a nuanced mother who wants resolution. Jason Schwartzman and Jonah Hill supports the film well and Eric Bana was HILARIOUS, delivering a Jock-like character that is redeemable.

PQ is muted in terms of color in the first hour and this (IMO) was intentional giving the state of the Sandler's character but brightens vividly in the second half offering the suburban interior a very warm and comforting atmosphere. Film grain is evident and beautiful to see! Flesh tones are veen and there are no artifacts to speak of. Janusz Kaminski is a godsend to this films Cinematography as Apatow's previous films look very static, stable and safe. Kaminski gives "Funny People" motion and fluidity which hightens the emotional impact of the film.

AQ is well done with this film being mostly dialogue driven; the film is very audible. Ambient sounds in the improv clubs are well directed and Music is balanced well. A very worthy Audio experience.

Extras are A PLENTY!!! First disc offer a Commentary, a Impressive FOUR PART DOCUMENTARY about the film, line-o-rama's and gag reels. Moving on to disc 2, there are episodes of "Yo Teach!" other "mockumentaries", film clips from Sandler's character in the film. PLENTY of Alternate, Extended scenes as well as MORE Deleted Scenes and the films Theatrical Trailer.

Refreshing Drama/Comedy from Judd Apatow

This is a very well made movie with great acting from everyone involved including Adam Sandler, yes Adam Sandler! It is not your typical comedy so if you go into this movie expecting that you will be sorely disappointed.

The PQ and AQ are standard for new Bluray releases, they are adequate but not outstanding.

The extras, however, are outstanding just as with any other Apatow movie.

Overall I would highly recommend this to anyone that is willing to watch a comedy with very serious things to say about life and death and about how we live our lives.

Funny People

Funny People is a wonderful dramedy from Judd Apatow and while it fails to top 40 Year Old Virgin, I'd say it is on par with Knocked Up. First, Funny People has a top-notch cast and along with Apatow's great script, give the movie depth which many comedies lack these days. Adam Sandler is fantastic as George Simmons, a comedian who finds out he has leukemia and luckily, Sandler handles this dark subject with a great, emotional yet funny performance and shows off his incredible acting talent which many people don't give him credit for. Simmons who after a particularly grim stand up routine meets Ira (played by Seth Rogen), a struggling comedian who George sees talent in and offers him a job writing jokes for him. Seth Rogen is a terrific comedic actor and his performance here is stellar. The story features an excellent balance of comedic & dramatic moments but one disappointment was that the trailer ruined what really could have been a big surprise for the audience, too bad. Along with the main stars of Sandler & Rogen, Funny People features a brilliant supporting cast filled with both Apatow regulars and newcomers alike. Leslie Mann (Apatow's real life wife) is truly outstanding as Laura, George's lost love who starts to reconnect with George after finding out about his condition. I'm sure people might be sick of Apatow casting his wife in his movies but she is a great comedic actress and is just so sweet in this movie. Rounding out the supporting cast is the always hilarious Jonah Hill & Jason Schwartman who play Ira's roomates but Eric Bana really surprised me as Laura's Australian husband, Clarke; he is very funny and steals some of Sandler / Rogen's thunder in his scenes with them. As much as I praise the cast, I have to applaud Judd Apatow once again pulling double duty as writer / director because Funny People is his best shot movie so far and the pacing of the film is very good, rarely does the film ever become slow or boring even with the nearly 2 and 1/2 hour runtime. I really enjoyed Funny People but there were a few minor things that brought the movie down a bit mainly that I wished they spend more time developing George & Laura's relationship and while the movie has a lot of good laughs, there wasn't really any huge, hilarious moments like in Apatow's previous films that had me in tears from laughing so hard. Overall, Funny People is another success for Judd Apatow; the movie is heartfelt, funny, and wonderfully written. The casting is marvellous all around and features brilliant performances from Sandler, Rogen and Leslie Mann plus Eric Bana is frickin' awesome in his role. I can't say I loved this movie as much as 40 Year Old Virgin but it is one of the best comedies of 2009 so far and everybody should definitely see it. (The unrated cut adds about 5 minutes and most of it is just some added stand-up that doesn’t add much to the story but is pretty funny)

The PQ is good, the movie has a fair layer of grain present through-out however detail is very solid, the image is crisp with nice depth to it and the contrast looks very natural. This transfer won’t impress but it does represent the source material well. The audio is fine; being a comedy, it is very front heavy and your system won’t get much of a workout. However, dialogue is very clear and during a few scenes, the rear speakers become fairly active. Again, won’t be a demo track but sounds good for what it is. The highlight of this disc as with all Apatow films are the bonus features; there is a stellar commentary track featuring Rogen, Sandler and Apatow who deliver a funny discussion about their past and of filming. There is huge BTS featurette exploring pretty much every aspect of the film, deleted stand-ups & scenes and hilarious clips from the fake George movies. My only minor complaint is that the gag reel is far too short.

Funny People is a great movie that blends the classic Apatow rude humor with a dramatic, heartfelt story about one man journey to find his place after a tragic event. The performances are splendid especially from Sandler and Leslie Mann and the story is well written & funny. Universal provides us with a solid transfer and audio track and a fantastic package of hilarious extras. Overall, I would recommend adding Funny People to your collection particularly if you enjoyed Apatow’s

Funny?

I kind of liked this movie. It wasn't so much as funny as dramatic. This movie seemed like a drama/real life experience movie. There were some funny parts. Honestly, I was expecting it to be funnier.

PQ: The Video is good and sometimes ok. For the most part it's good. Some scenes look kind of bad, like SD.

AQ: The Audio is great.
