When someone asks you if you're a god, you say "YES"!
Ghostbusters is a one of the best comedies of the 80's or any other decade. The premise is simple, a group of scientists start a business to capture and contain ghosts, add Dan Akroyd and Bill Murray and let the hilarity ensue. Rick Moranis is entertaining as the annoying neighbor to our heroine in distress Sigourney Weaver(like she couldn't kick Zuul's ass), and Harold Ramis is the foil to our headline comics.
The transfer is somewhat inconsistent with many scenes looking very good, but others appearing a little softer with black levels fluctuating from scene to scene. The audio is pretty good throughout, but remember this is an 80's comedy, so don't expect Master and Commander level audio on this.
Recommended to Fans of Akroyd, Murray, or comedies in genereal. |

Grain IS film..
Make no mistake this release looks like it came from 1984. This in my opinion is a good thing. It means they preserved the look so commonly associated with the mid-eighties. It not quite as grainy as the late 70s produced but it still looks like film stock. Film is made of many little dots commonly referred to as grains. I wish people would inform themselves a little better about film transfers before they try to inform others about them.
There's a difference between grain and dirt. This transfer is NOT dirty. It's a solid transfer and anyone who claims different doesn't know better. |

Like a Fine Wine
I picked this up having not seen the original in over a decade. Boy did this movie age well, of all the old 80's flicks this is probably the one I've found the most enjoyable on BD. Usually in some way these older movies constantly remind me of their age, but something about how Ghostbusters was written and acted keeps that from coming to mind while I watch it. I'm not a huge fan of grain, that said the grain on this BD never bothered me in the least, and I'd much rather have it as intended than distorted in some fashion with DNR. I can't give it a 5/5 of course, the detail simply wasn't there, but the picture's definitely good for this old classic. This was a great nostalgia pickup for me, and if you have the same fond memories I do of Ghostbusters I definitely recommend picking this BD up. |

A classic
I can't say a whole lot more than what's already been written about this BD. PQ is excellent for a 25 year old film. I don't know why others are knocking the PQ? Are they expecting it to look like Iron Man or The Dark Knight? It's a 25 year old movie, and it looks great for it's age. Blacks are especially good, colors are natural and accurate, and contrast is very good. AQ is fine, nothing to write home about, but very good for a 25 year old movie. The movie itself is classic. |

do not listen to 1984u's review of this film's PQ
Ok, 1984u must be a newb to Blu-ray because the person would understand the reason for why there is quite a bit of grain on this fantastic release of Ghostbusters. The original filming quality of the movie was quite poor, and by not DNRing the movie to death, the grain is kept, along with a very nice amount of detail. Just like in the Blu-ray.com review, if you hate grain, don't get the movie, because you will be disappointed. However, the grain retains the movie's film-like appearance, so it is a great buy regardless. The audio is much better than the DVD version, and the PQ is also better imo. Love the extras and I love this movie.
P.S. Grain-haters need to get over the fact that not everything is going to look so glossy when they watch a movie, because you guys are missing out on some great films that retain the grain, like this movie!! |

It was great except for the audio
I was impressed with everything about this release except for the audio.... it was weak... literally weak.... i know this might not be a good representation but my ps3 gave it an average 1.1mbps output -_-
id go off into a rant about little annoyances (one of them being the music track when the ghostbusters are taken out of jail to head for the mayors office) but im going to leave it at this..
great video, extra features, audio was weak |

"WE CAME. WE SAW. WE KICKED IT'S ASS"
This is one of the better comedies of the 80's. Still holds up pretty well 25 years later. The special effects are a little oudated but that's part of the film's charm.
Great cast led by Bill Murray and who can forget that classic theme song by Ray Parker JR.
I thaught the transfer was very good and the dialogue clear throughout
Glad I picked this one up and yeah bustin' STILL makes me feel good all these years later!

Too much grain? Check your video settings or recalibrate them.
No regrets on this purchase. Picture quality is probably the best this film will ever be.
I see a lot of complaints about excessive grain. Obviously this film will have grain, but nothing overly distracting. If it is excessive, I suggest you fine tune/recalibrate your video settings if you haven't already done so.
If my tv is set to the "VIVID" setting...the grain IS compounded and distracting. But with my custom/calibrated settings, the picture is just fine.
The preset "VIVID" setting in my experience makes colors pop but they are exaggerated; good only for the likes of newer movies and animation. For a true color representation, customize your settings.
If you don't know how...buy the calibration blu or look online for what others with your same tv have set and tweak them a bit to your liking.
Hope this helps those with grain issues. |

Great movie
This movie is an acceptable bluray. The video is good for a movie made in '84 although I have seen better transfers from movies made before this one. Te reason I belive is because the way the movie was shot. Audio is grat when they are using the blasters or chasing a ghost but it gets really quiet when its just the actors talking. The Extras I didn't dive into that much because I dont really care about them. just give me the movie. The Price of 19.99 is very reasonable considering I've seen movies that aren't as popular for 29.99. After it is all said and done this is a nust have for any fan of the Ghostbusters. I am mad that when I looked up part if and when it was coming to blu ray I saw that they have a two pack listed. I hope 1 of 2 things happen. If they can improve any thing they can. If not release part 2 separate. |

Bustin' makes me feel good
For starters, this movie doesn't need a review because it's an absolute classic. This is Blu-ray, so we're really concerned about the other stuff more.
Starting with the PQ...Lots of negative reviews based on grain. Sure it's grainy but this isn't supposed to be glossy like Iron Man or Transformers. It is a little disappointing though cause it just doesn't look that great, although there is far worse on Blu. AQ is decent though, definitely a little better than the PQ.
Overall, if you're a fan of this movie there's no reason not to buy it. I got it for real cheap on Amazon so I didn't hesitate...you shouldn't either. |

Entertaining beyond the capacity for rational thought!
I remember clearly when "Ghostbusters" came out back in June of 1984. It solidly merged comedy with sci-fi in a way not really seen since. Today (6-16-2009), the movie was released for sale on Blu-ray disc, and I didn't hesitate to pick it up and view it immediately, replacing my aged 1999 DVD release.
Of course, you get all the witty, comedic chemistry of Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis. It's really a perfect blend of screenwriting and performance which will get you laughing unexpectedly throughout the entire movie!
Picture quality was not exceptionally strong, but solid. There was a fair amount of graininess, some flickering and occasional color-flatness, but remembering that this movie was filmed in 1984, and utilized the special effects compositing techniques of the time, helps us to realize that this movie's look is a matter of being faithful to the original. I always hope for the sharpest and cleanest looking video, but I'll take a faithful transfer over an artificially enhanced/processed one, and all the more so when it comes to older films. I noticed things I never noticed before, such as Dana's (Sigourney Weaver) and Louis' (Rick Moranis) skeletons flashing through during her bodily transfiguration, and the parts of the Central Park West building shaking loose just before Gozer re-appears to settle the choosing of "the destructor." Overall, the Blu-ray release is a move up from the DVD versions.
The Dolby TrueHD 5.1-channel audio is also faithful to the original, and the lossless sound reveals the age and recording technology of the movie's era. It sounds as though the music and score of the movie were carefully re-dubbed, because they are noticeably cleaner than the dialog, environmental sounds and other effects. The overall audio volume is somewhat lower than average - I had to punch up the volume on my Pioneer Elite SC-05 receiver appreciably to really get the juice going. Center channel dialog sounded a bit low through most of the movie, and I longed for it to be a little more present. Not a lot of surround activity, but present at certain, important points. There is solid LFE when its needed, and this is especially noticeable during the second half of the movie, and especially at its climactic conclusion. To be sure, the second half of the movie is more sonically present than the first half.
"Ghostbusters" is one of the consummate '80s blockbuster super-hits. It's worthy of a place in anyone's collection, as fans of comedy, sci-fi, action, and even romantic comedy will find all of the above in abundance. Lighthearted and funny, it's quality entertainment for the whole family. Its merits as a cinematic achievement far outweigh all picture quality and audio quality shortfalls. "Who you gonna call?" |

They're here to save the World.....................
Hard to believe it's been 25 years since the debut of the biggest comedy of all time. At least until 1990 when Home Alone came out. Ghostbusters still holds up all these years later thanks to the talents of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis and Annie Potts. To bad Ghostbusters II would not become as iconic as the original, but now with the buzz of a Ghostbusters III, bringing back all the main cast is quite exciting. Sony gives us a very good looking transfer from a movie shot in the 80's. There is some grain present but it's not to distracting and audio quality gives the soundtrack a good listen. Supliments are fair game as the real meat of them is the picture in picture track with some worth while notes about the films production. Missing is Bill Murray's presence, but it doesn't take away the fact that this is a must own classic on blu. |

GRAIN HEAVEN
grain heaven
I leave to comment about the movie it self since I guess this is a movie that most here have seen many times. But for me I got it since I did grow up with film.
P.Q: this is a movie made in 1984 but don't think Colombia have been working too hard with restoring this film....... well GRAIN it lot of it (EVERY WHERE!!) so if u don't like grain.....
S.Q: Since I love DTS I compare films with DTS and Dolby True HD.... is not something a love but guess sony loves it, I don't. The sound is ok but very flat nothing exciting.
Overall: Ok fun movie to watch again. |

Consistently good looking for its age. Occasionally great looking...
Ghostbusters is one of those films I grew up with, so I will always have a soft spot in my heart for it. It is as hilarious today as it was when I was 4, maybe even more so now, since none of the jokes go over my head. The chemistry between Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd is still as simply awesome.
As far as picture quality goes, the film looks as good as it can. Some of the darker shots, feature excessive grain, as many have mentioned. No big deal. It would have looked this way in a theater in 1984. There is also some loss of detail and analogue artifacting on many of the effects shots. But once again, these problems all stem from the source.
Despite its problems, this is Ghostbusters like you've never seen it before, and at ten bucks, that's more than enough for me. I haven't checked out the extras yet. |

A true classic
This film was one of many films that i remember very fondly from when i was a kid, The picture quality on this blu ray is fantastic for a film that is so old (Get over the grain) it is meant to have the grain thats the way the film looks.
The sound was pretty good but by no means the best, But i think overall your getting this film the best you possibly can which is exellent because like the title says it is an absolute classic film. |

Ghostbusters
This is definitely not the best looking or best sounding Blu-ray title but it is the best I've ever seen or heard this movie. The grain is a bit excessive and distracting at times and the sound falls flat in areas, but there are times when the video and sound are great. The sound of the proton packs powering on...AWESOME!!! |

Not worthy!
Don't get me wrong, the movie is a classic. But this transfer to me is just unacceptable and not worth the money. Grain on this disc is the WORST I have ever seen and I own over 300 BDs and HD/DVDs. At times it feels like you're watching a VHS copy. Some scenes are excellent, but most are subpar, particularly with dark colors. Audio is very good, but the video quality ruins it for me. To those who say "this is how the movie SHOULD look", BS! It's a blu-ray disc, it should not look this way and don't tell me a mid-80's film couldn't be transferred any better than this. I own movies on BD from the 50's and 60's that blow this one out of the water. If this is the best that could be done, don't even bother releasing the film on BD. |

Too much grain
Grain is one thing but this way too heavy for my taste. Why bother to go Blu and HD if movies are going to look like this? A little grain is OK but give me a cleaned up version of a movie any day. Sound was very good though. |
