A Stunning Version of GWTW!
I thought the Blu Ray of Wizard of Oz was great, but I think the Blu Ray of Gone With The Wind may even be a little better. The PQ of this 70 yr old movie is really amazing. It looks so much better than any version of it I have seen. This is one of my favorite movies and I have been waiting on the Blu Ray for a long time. Warner Bros has definitely done justice to this classic! |

Technicolor Lives
It's pretty much a useless effort to review the film itself... because people will flock to it regardless of nay-saying guy film geeks who inwardly fear all women may be like Scarlett or politically correct sensitives who fear that anyone without a brain finds the film to be a dangerous last word on the subject of what the South was like 150 years ago.
People will continue to identify and view "Gone With the Wind" because it is the best telling of human motivation and resilience to date--and easily one of the best-acted films there is.
Today the 70 year old film swept on to blu-ray with one of the most sumptuous and beautiful presentations imagineable.
From the Selznick Studio facade that heralds the opening titles through the flowery prologue, there are new colors and details that have never been revealed in any home video version before. The opening shots FINALLY give us the rich reds that are usually only to be seen in screenings of the 1954 Technicolor prints. When Scarlett's hair-ribbons in the first scenes deliver a deep lollipop red, you know you're being shown the real deal.
And it doesn't end there (but 3 1/2 hours later...). The Twelve Oaks scenes look amazing--with shadow and contrast at perfect levels and black levels solid and deep. The costumes are at their best in this showcase and at the Atlanta Bazaar where we are treated to best-case examples of color enriching the action.
GWTW gets less pretty as the Civil War wears on and this transfer sticks to the intended orange and yellow hues that characterize the dust and grime of war and the grays and dark blues of Tara at Scarlett's return. The Atlanta depot filled with wounded and the famous fire are sharp and the colors are more vibrant than in the 4-disc set from 2004.
The second half is lush and textured in a remarkable way. The green velvets are plusher in Scarlett's drape dress, the detail stronger in Melanie's parlour (you can see the painting of her brother Charles clearly on the wall) and Mammy's red-silk petticoat at last is truly red. I don't think I have even seen a print of the film that got the burgundy on Scarlett's "shame" dress right like this --and again the red levels for the mansion's staircase as they contrast with the red in Scarlett's robe reflect what 3-strip Technicolor can do.
The end scenes which simulate candlelight illuminating varied shades of skin color and continue into gray fogs and deep blacks are masterfully done and look like the 39 nitrate clips I have seen. The final pullback is simply beautiful. It really all is from start to finish.
The transfer includes detail that will astonish people who have seen the film many times and the spectrum of color helps to clearly distinguish tiny objects and background in a remarkable and film-like texture. The much-lauded lighting, which lends so much to the atmosphere, is rendered perfectly.
The extras are good, but there isn't too much there that we haven't seen before. The inclusion of the "Movieola:The Scarlett O'Hara Wars"" film is fun and there is a half hour look at the lasting effect of the film that was nice. Although the packaging does not indicate it, the German, Italian and Portugese dubbings are also included. |

By far. The Best Classic Movie Transfer!!!
This has been my favorite movie since I was a child. I would like to thank Warner for the superb job they did. The Box Set is fantastic. It looks like GWTW was made a few years ago. The video quality is amazing!! Don't think twice. Get it while you can. I would like to say that there are Portuguese Mono and subtitles as well as in Italian. |

How Could A 70 Year Old Movie Look So Amazing In HD?
The movie itself needs no review: with a few detractors here and there aside, GWTW is one of Hollywood's greatest acheivements- period. Even youngsters who have never seen the movie have heard of its iconic characters: are there any names in cinematic history bigger than "Scarlett O'Hara" or "Rhett Butler?"
What's so amazing is just how great a 70 year old movie can look! GWTW is simply gorgeous to look at. Colors are absolutely prisitine to behold, and black levels are gorgeous and deep. While there is some softness in the image from time to time, there are so many jaw- dropping moments that I felt like I was watching this for the first time all over again. This is an absolute must- own for any movie lover who cherishes his/her Blu Ray collection.
A few things to consider:
The movie in the gift set does not come in a traditional blu jewel case, which may be a concern for those who prefer uniformity to their collection. Be sure to make extra room for your gift set. If you're the type who does not really get into all the extras, there is a stand-alone version that comes in the traditional blu jewel case. At the time of writing this, the stand-alone is not available in stores, but can be ordered at Amazon.com.
Also, the movie is presented in a letterbox format- there are black bars on either side of the picture, so the image does not stretch across the entire screen. I guess I should have known this before I watched it, and once the movie gets going it doesn't matter anyway. Still, it is something to consider if watching on very small televisions. It won't matter on larger sets.
All in all, WB treated one of cinema's greatest movies with the red carpet treatment. Easily worth 5 stars across the board. |

Technicolor at its best!
I never thought Vivian Leigh or Clark Gable as anything more that actors from the 30s & 40s.
After watching GWTW in blu I actually see their sex appeal, beauty, chemistry!
After countless viewings of this movie I can honeslty say I felt I was in the same room with them.
The sweat on the brows of the actors really suggested the South's humidity.
Scarlett's has the most beautiful green eyes.
Rhett's are spectacularly green too, framed by long eyelashes.
The Greek revivial Twelve Oaks plantation looks spectacular
I said WOW outloud the fist time in the scene where we are introduced to Gerald Ohara. He and Scarlett talk about the Wilkes bbq, it looks like it was shot yesterday!
There was so much more detail to see in the sets, costumes, props.
How can this movie be 70 years old and look this good.
Check it out, you wont be sorry. |

Excellent Movie, Great Price, Thanks For The Headsup Bluray.com..
I was really disappointed that the GWTW was only released in the big box set and a Target only exclusive 3 disc edition. I have gone to Target almost twice a week since it was released and they never had the 3 disc set. I thought the box was too expensive. Then last week BluRay.com had a tidbit about the boxset being on sale at Amazon for $39!!! I ordered it on Wednesday (as a Xmas gift to myself) and got it Thursday with free shipping. Well worth it!!! |

Target has the single disc exclusive however its $39.99
I did pick up the single disc exclusive from Target yesterday however it is 40.00. I got it on sale for 35.00 but considering the same set for wizard of oz single disc is at walmart for 20.00 I found this to be really expensive. Single disc no special features at all.
Just a heads up for those who dont need the whole special set |
