Gran Torino
Gran Torino is a spectacular film. Clint Eastwood is magnificent as Walt Kowalski, a racist war vet who after a serious of events becomes a unlikely protector of his neighbours and a role model to young man named Thao. While Eastwood is the primary focus in the acting department, I thought both Christopher Carley and newcomer Bee Vang gave excellent supporting performances as well. Gran Torino is a very odd blend of genres, the movie is intense when it needs to be yet features some terrific and real funny moments and the ending is very powerful. The pacing of the film is perfect and the script tackles a very serious subject yet never comes off as offensive or stereotypical, it just feels real. Overall, Gran Torino is a wonderful film; Eastwood is amazing (the academy should be ashamed for not nominating Clint) and while some may be turned off by the subject matter, in the end, I can't give enough praise to the film and I highly recommend everyone see it.
On to the disc quality, the transfer is quite good despite a few minor issues I saw. Detail is very good through-out and the PQ had good depth to it and I was impressed by how the movie handled the darker scenes; I rarely saw any loss of clarity to the image. The image is sharp but because of the style of the film, the colors are fairly muted and never really appear to be super vibrant. This isn't the type of movie that will be used for demo material but it captures the sytle of the film very well.
The audio is solid but I found that in some scenes, dialogue was too quiet and I found I had to turn up of system from them. This is a dialogue driven drama so it is very front heavy track with little usage of the sub besides one or two sequences and the back speakers rarely come alive. However, other than a few select scenes, dialogue was crisp (although Eastwood's voice is pretty hard to understand sometimes anyways) and I wasn't really expecting much of the track and I would say it suits the movie fine.
There really isn't a whole lot to the extras which is pretty disappointing because I would have loved to see more about how they made the film and what inspired Eastwood to come back to acting. We do a couple of featurettes which were somewhat entertaining and WB does proivde a digital copy with the film.
Gran Torino is a powerful & moving film in which Eastwood delivers a knock-out performance and is a perfect send-off to a marvelous acting career. The film features a brilliant script that is able to tackle such deep issues while providing real laughs through-out the entire film. The disc features great PQ, respectable audio and decent extras although I wished they included more. Overall, I highly recommend adding Gran Torino to your collection and is must have for any Clint Eastwood fans out there. |

CLINT IS BACK!!!!
The man is back, how could anyone not want to see this. The movie itself is well worth the buy, its everything you would want from a Clint Eastwood film. The younger actors are a little hard to believe at moments, but it isn't the most distracting element.
The PQ is pretty good, not the greatest looking movie on blu ray, but still looks very good. The AUDIO is what really suffers on this film. I had to turn volume to max to get to an alright level. If it wasn't for the audio, i would have no problems with the disc. Extras are few, a commentary would have been nice for the price, but oh well. Im not too disappointed with lack of extras as i am with the low audio.
OVERALL- Film is great, but the disc has some flaws. Video is more than acceptable, but audio just isn't doing it for me. |

Not Clint's best....but right up there !
In recent memory Mystic River was his best directorial movie but this is no slouch. And it's hard which he acted better in...this or Million Dollar Baby ? But he is the man and this being his last was a classic Eastwood performance. When he pulls out the gun on the front lawn and starts talking i was like here we go ! Go Clint ! But afterwards it went differently then i had hoped but dont get me wrong, GREAT movie. Well worth it ! And the last 2 minutes were beautiful !
PQ was awesome and AQ was fine...mostly dialogue so don't hope for to much. Extras were good and the BD-LIVE for this buy was just as terrible as ALL the others! |

Dirty Walt.................
Hard to believe that with the impressive career Clint Eastwood has that Gran Torino would be his biggest money maker and one that was snubbed by the Academy Awards for 2008. When this movie was first announced it was rumored to be the sixth Dirty Harry film but obviously it is not, but in a sense, Clint's characterization could be one of an aging Callahan. Torino is a very powerfull story of steroetypes and growing old. Eastwood gives a great performance and the rest of the cast stands toe to toe with the cinema legend. Warner provides a nice, but not spectacular Blu disc with good P&AQ. Extra's on on the light side, but that is one commen thing amongst Eastwood's films. Not much in the extra's department. Needless to say this is a must own for all Eastwood fans young and old. |

Classic Eastwood
A superlative achievement, Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino" (2008) charts new territory for the legendary actor-director while continuing his cinematic winning streak. The fact that Eastwood made this film and the powerful "Changeling" in the same year is nothing short of astonishing. I ordered both of them online for great prices, hopefully they have the same deal. Just when you thought Clint had retired from acting, he emerges with another classic portrayal as a redemptive veteran in a changing urban landscape. Hollywood rarely gets it right these days, but Eastwood still delivers the goods. "Gran Torino" represents the movie icon at his absolute best. |

Clint Eastwood continues the saga
Its not jus a movie about a grumpy old man who gets violent with some hmung people. It actually talks more about racial difference then most movies, movies that are even directed at race.
The transfer is a nice clean and somewhat vibrant one. Flesh tones are appealing and nothing is to over powering. definitely worth a blu-ray.
The audio, I was a bit disappointed with dialog was inconsistent. Sometimes I could barely hear Clint and others it was clear as day. |

Eastwood's finest hour. Gran Torino is a Masterpiece!
Perhaps Gran Torino isn't Clint Eastwood's greatest movie of all time (that will likely always be "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" and "Dirty Harry") but it is certainly among his most powerful films and his finest hour as a lead actor. This is a movie that hits you like a punch in the face and doesn't let up. Gran Torino stays with you and lingers long after the credits role. Never before has a movie started off with such a clear cut, perhaps even conventional premise and ended up with such a marvelous execution. For once here's a film that not only rises to meet our expectations of how great it's going to be; it far exceeds them.
Eastwood, plays Walt Kowalski, an aging war veteran who lives alone with his classic gran torino automobile. Walt is a bitter and lonely old man; isolated and grumpy. He is disappointed and disillusioned with the modern world around him. Walt has a grim outlook on life, needless to say he trusts no one but his dog. "I only go to church because it makes my wife happy" he tells his young and rather naive priest (who continually tries to get Walt to go to confession at the request of his late wife). Walt has other problems though. His family is mostly composed of suburban yuppie jerks who only care about themselves and his granddaughter is a clueless teenager who wears hip clothing he finds offensive. To make matters worse his grown up son is too busy to really talk to him (on his birthday they try and put him in a retirement home!). Walt is grumpy and bitter for two reasons: Mainly because of his own tendency to lead a simple, quiet life away from the pestering of others and also because of his own post-traumatic stress, emotional burdens and apparent prejudice. His neighborhood is overrun with ethnic gangs, juvenile delinquents and neighbors that he finds to be grotesque caricatures of boys he killed during the War. He casually spews crude ethnic jokes and phrases that might seem normal to him but extremely offensive to most. Suffice it to say his only real friends are his dog and the local barber (also a bit of a grump).
The emotional cornerstone of the film is one of both change and personal sacrifice. Walt’s world turns upside down when his next door neighbor’s son attempts to steal his Gran Torino. The culprit is “Thao”, a young, smart yet very shy and unfocused young man. Thao comes from a very traditional Asian “Hmong” family who sees Thao’s act as a shame on the family. Walt learns that Thao’s error was meant to be an initiation for his cousin’s local gang (a group of low-life two-bit criminal delinquents who are more lost than focused in their determination to create a criminal enterprise). In order for the young man to regain his dignity, Walt must agree to have Thao work for him doing odd jobs, house work and labor. Later on, Walt reluctantly agrees to take Thao under his wing and act as a father figure/mentor. What emerges is a very moving story of two very different men who learn to be better human beings despite their immense differences. Thao learns self-respect, honor and commitment while Walt learns that not all people are the same despite their apparent physical similarities. Once Thao’s cousins begin harassing the neighborhood, tragedy strikes and Walt takes it upon himself to shelter Thao’s family, the neighborhood by going Dirty Harry on all these criminals. Walt’s transformation however, is far more complex and meaningful than some simple vigilante stint on his decaying neighborhood.
Many themes permeate Eastwood’s recent body of work; these themes include the aging anti-hero rising to the occasion amidst the turmoil of injustice. Also a prominent theme is the bitter loner who finds solace in the admiration and loving relationship of someone much younger and completely different. Such powerful themes were explored in Eastwood’s Oscar®-winning films like “Million Dollar Baby” and “Unforgiven” (both won the coveted Best-Picture award). But of all these titles, Gran Torino stands out among the rest. For one thing, its theme is such a powerful one with a strong feeling of immediacy (this story could happen anywhere). Also strong is Eastwood’s dead-on script and acting. Here’s a film that knows what it’s trying to do and takes its time.
Gran Torino isn’t interested in setting up the audience for sappy emotional payoffs, violent action sequences or moments of verbal explosion. This movie creates a very real universe of characters who we can relate two and develops them heavily. There are fantastic supporting roles from Christopher Carley who plays Walt’s young priest, Bee Vang who plays Thao, Ahney Her who plays Thao intelligent and caring older sister Sue who takes it upon herself to make Walt’s return to humanity her number one project. Geraldine Hughes (Rocky Balboa) who plays the daughter-in-law, Brian Haley who plays Walt’s son, Doua Moua as Thao's gangster cousin and John Carroll Lynch (Fargo, Zodiac) who plays Walt’s barber. The cast is all exceptional and realistic, adding a lot of heart to the mix. Towering above them all is Eastwood who gives the performance of a life-time that no other actor on the planet could have played. This is his finest hour and a fitting swan song for the aging titan (if indeed this is his last acting effort—which I certainly hope it isn’t).
Everything about Gran Torino is very entertaining. Everything from the dialogue to the story and characters; each element reeks of authenticity and is never contrived or forced. The screenplay is a wondrous balancing act of both uncomfortably harsh drama and startling funny moments. This is probably one of the best movies about aging and also arguably the best ever made about racism and prejudice (films like Do the Right Thing and Boys in the Hood come to mind). Gran Torino is also a slice of life drama full of lightheartedness and insight. It has moments that are gut-wrenchingly painful, yet Eastwood is skillful enough to let our imaginations soak in and guides us through more painful moments with innate reserve and observation. The ending shot of the film is among the most moving I’ve ever seen. Gran Torino is a masterpiece, through and through. It’s also one of the best films this year or any year. |

A decent drama.
Walt, a recently-widowed Korean war veteran and former Ford factory worker, is haunted by his past and bitter about the changes in, and the decline of, the foreigner-infested America he sees around him. When he inadvertently rescues his Hmong neighbour, Thao Lor, from a gang swarming, Walt becomes somewhat of a local hero. Thao's sister, Sue, befriends Walt and draws him out of his isolation. He eventually grows fond of his neighbours, and defensive of both Thao and Sue. When the Hmong gang eventually returns to terrorize the family, Walt realizes that the only way to help his new friends is to confront the gang and end their reign of terror once and for all.
Despite the highly-contrived situations, amateurish acting and weak dialogue, this was a decent, if uncomplicated, drama. Eastwood is his usual mediocre self, and yet he's really the only thing that gives this movie any clout. Without him, it would have been a "straight to rental" film.
The PQ was very good. The soundtrack wasn't particularly dynamic - no surprise, given the low-key nature of this movie - but the AQ was pretty good overall, although the dialogue was a little "boxy" sounding at times. |

The Shootist, 2009?
A great movie, but as i sat watching it, i kept drawing parallels to John Wayne's, The Shootist - old man hated by his neighbors and dying befriends a young man, teaches him how to be a man, and dies in the end the way he would want to. |

Nobody does it better than Eastwood, and Gran Torino is no exception!!
Another masterpiece from the legendary Clint Eastwood, "Gran Torino" hits all the right notes in
every aspect of the film: the top-notch acting, the powerful story, and above-average Eastwood
direction! Clint delivers another fine performance as Walt Kowalski, a disgruntled former Korean
War veteran and retired automobile factory worker who has just lost his wife. His family are too
self-absorbed in their own lives to think about Walt, and Walt doesn't get along with them just
the same. Walt holds on to his prejudices despite the changes in the world around him and in his
Michigan neighborhood, especially since his next-door neighbors happen to be Hmong immigrants
from Southeast Asia. His most prized possession is a 1972 Ford Gran Torino he keeps in mint
condition. One of Walt's next-door neighbors, a young Hmong teenager named Thao (newcomer
Bee Vang), is under pressure from his gang member cousin to steal Walt's Gran Torino one night.
But Walt catches Thao in the act and sets out to reform the youth. In the process, Walt starts to
befriend and warm up to his new neighbors, including Thao (who has become like a son to Walt)
and his sister Sue (newcomer Ahney Her). In a way, Walt's Hmong neighbors have become a
kind of second family to him. In fact, they're even more of a family to Walt now than his own
family ever was. Meanwhile, a vicious Asian gang (the same gang in which Thao's cousin is a part
of) is infesting the neighborhood, and Walt is soon taking steps to protect Thao and his family
from having any harm come to them.
Once again, Clint Eastwood gives a brilliant performance as only he can. And when he is in the
director's chair, it's like watching a composer conduct a symphony, and Clint has certainly
conducted an unforgettable masterpiece that will stay with you long after the credits roll. Also
much of the credit also goes to newcomers Bee Vang and Ahney Her as Thao and Sue. Their
performances definitely stood out the most in the film! And I also have to give credit to another
newcomer in the form of young actor Christopher Carley. In the film, Carley plays Father
Janovich, who oversaw the funeral for Walt's wife. Father Janovich visits Walt's house to make
sure that Walt will come to confession at his late wife's church, as promised to the young priest
by Walt's late wife herself.
The PQ and AQ are excellent in every way possible, and the special features are excellent as well,
including a featurette that talks about the meaning of manhood as reflected in American car
culture and another featurette that showcases Clint Eastwood's filmmaking process. And as
standard practice with all new Warner/New Line BD releases, there is also a digital copy of the
film for iTunes and Windows Media Player. I'll probably download the digital copy for my iPhone
later on in the year.
In conclusion, Clint Eastwood shows us why he is the best of the best, both as an actor and as a
director, and Gran Torino is living proof of that. For everyone here at Blu-ray.com, check it out
for yourselves and you'll see why. Gran Torino is a definite must-own not only for every Blu-ray
collection, but for die-hard Clint Eastwood fans as well! |

Great Eastwood performance and picture quality
If this is indeed Clint's final acting performance as he mentioned, it will be a most worthy sendoff. As Walt Kowalski, an extremely intolerant and disagreeable Korean War vet, he lives alone as a recent widower in a crumbling Detroit suburb with his only remaining loves being his dog, house and mint 1972 Gran Torino that he personally helped build on his many years on the Ford assembly line. He wants little to do with his rotten, self-centered family or the Asian influx that has taken over his neighborhood. After a botched gang-initiation affects him directly, he begrudgingly becomes slowly involved with the Laotian family next door. As they gradually soften his ways he becomes a mentor and protector as the violence begins to build around them. Eastwood's pacing is deliberate, but there are many chuckles to be had with his new-found interactions as well as some Dirty Harry moments (that only he could pull off) on the way to a powerful ending. His excellence shows both in front of and behind the cameras and his supporting cast is strong, even with some rough spots from the mostly non-professional Laotian actors (though Ahney Her (Sue) was quite a find).
The PQ on the BD is excellent. Detail is very strong here, from the deep wrinkles in Clint's face to the chips of paint on the dilapidated houses. The color palette in this film is fairly muted and is pretty much what I had seen in the theaters. Day scenes are bright and clean, with the night scenes well delineated as well. Audio is serviceable, being a more dramatic than all-out gang war action film. The track does come alive when necessary and there is nice ambience during gathering and party scenes. Unlike a lot of Warner titles, I believe this one defaulted to the 5.1 TrueHD track on startup.
Extras on the disc itself are a bit slim but pretty interesting, with three featurettes in HD (with the behind-the-scenes one a BD exclusive). There is a BD-Live option which actually has some decent downloadable goodies like the trailer, John Callum's "Gran Torino" music video and a 15-minute featurette about the Hmong cast. Also other BD trailers, including the upcoming LOTR Blu. |

Simply one of, if not, the best Clint Eastwood movie eve made. Clint, as director, pulls no punches in this far less than PC movie, with both action, humor and heart. I highly recommend this movie, and should be in most BD collections. |

Extraordinary
Well first off, this is my first Blu-Ray movie I have watched (on my PS3) and also my first Clint Eastwood movie. Now...
I thought the story was truly amazing it was a mix of genres such as horror, love, action and were all mixed together great. I thought the acting from everybody especially Clint Eastwood was fabulous. For my first Blu-Ray movie I wasn't sure how great it was suppose to look but I could easily tell it looks amazing compared to the DVD version. I did find that the darker areas in the movie did seem a bit grainy, and that the overall color seemed washed out and dull. I really enjoyed the fine details of the movie such as the wrinkles on Clint Eastwood's face to the weathered paint on his neighbors house. The audio I thought could have been a little better, I had to turn it up and down at certain parts especially speech. I also thought at times the music over powered the speakers. For this being my first Blu-Ray movie, I expected a lot more out the extras. There were only a few things on there that were pretty short. But this Blu-Ray did feature the Blu-Ray Live option that I was really sure what it was. So I tried it out and it seemed interesting but at the time of writing this there is still no "community" commentary. Over all though, this was a very moving, and powerful story that not only looked great but did an alright job on audio. |

Clint Eastwood ends it all on a high note
This was a phenomenal movie, pure and simple. A well written, well acted, well directed story that is in my opinion Eastwood's best effort (though also unfortunately his last). The video quality was not reference material, but the transfer was certainly very good. Excellent detail, and while colors are to some extent dull, one must remember that this is the setting and style of the movie creating that. I do think the audio could have been better, it was a bit inconsistent. What really disappoints me on this one is the special features. There will almost certainly be another release as a special edition with plenty of Eastwood extras. For now, this release will definitely do, and I highly recommend it. |

"Get off my lawn"
Great movie! I've never seen a Clint Eastwood movie before, and I really enjoyed Gran Torino! I didn't think that I would like it that much, but I did! I though some parts were funny, when Clint would talk shit to people. This is really great movie! Recommend you watch Gran Torino now!!!
PQ: The Video was good. It's not the best, but is still good. The difinition was ok, some things needed to be a little more difined. Good PQ though.
AQ: I'm not sure what happened when they put this movie on Blu-ray. The Audio wasn't very good. The dialouge and other sounds were very low. I was unempressed with the movie's audio track. I've heard better audio tracks that are not even HD audio tracks.
Still don't let the PQ or AQ stop you from watching this great movie! You need to watch Gran Torino! Really great movie! |
