Better than Blu-ray.com Gives it credit

This is a good movie, not the best, but way better than the 1.5 that blu-ray reviewer gave it. It was a good movie, and a great bluray to have for your collection.

Good sci-fi / action movie

Cool movie and it was a lot better than I expected, especially after reading some of the reviews on it. The movie was a lot of fun, had a cool sci-fi element and the action was great. Even better, the picture quality and sound quality are great and the disc is fully loaded with extras (digital copy, even PiP and non-PiP versions of one of the features). Looks like they left open the door for a sequel also and that would be fine by me. If you couldn't tell already, I really liked the movie. Bottom-line, perfect movie for the summer.

Much better than expected!

After hearing about all the negative press this movie received, I thought it was really going to be lame. However, since I rarely agree with the film critics (most of them echo one another's opinions, few have actual opinions of their own- which is why they all love or hate the same movies)), I figured the movie was worth a rent, at least. As I see with several other posts, I'm not alone in thinking the movie is actually quite good. From what I understand, this is the first installation of a supposed trilogy. The director wanted to have the first film open with a "bang" and then have the second film develop the characters more and dive into the moral dillemas surrounding the ability to warp from place to place. The first movie is just supposed to be a setup for a more complex story to follow. I hope this is the case.

A better movie than I expected. Great Tactile-Transducer demo materia

I was a bit trepidacious about buying this BD, as I had not seen the movie at the theater, and the reviews were mixed to say the least! I do not regret my purchace, if nothing else, this movie is great AV demo material. Let me say first, that I can understand the objections of those who did not like or understand this movie. I am not going to try to change their minds. This movie does not waste time trying to explain the specifics of how the teleporting works, a detailed backstory of the paladins, or hitting us over the head with the obvious. I do, however, hope they do spend some time in the 2nd movie with David seaking out other 'good' jumpers and learning more of the history of the jumpers and paladins. If you pay attention to what is said durring the movie, you will understand that the paladins are a religious group that thinks "only GOD should have-" this kind of "-power" and that all jumpers are 'wrong', 'evil', and 'abominations' to God. I'll bet that in the medievel era the paladins thought the power was demonic in origin. Once you watch the extras and listen to the commentary track, you understand that this movie is based on the main character in the book 'Jumper' by Steven Gould, and was made as part 1 of a possible trilogy, or maybe even a francise (like the Bond or Batman films). I can't really say much more without spoiling anything, but I would highly recommend at least a rental, and please go in with a open mind, you'll enjoy the all too short ride better if you do.

As for the PQ, this is a very clean, crisp transfer, with nice dark blacks while still having detail durring dark scenes. If you have your color a bit too high you will notice right away as the colors can be very rich and saturated durring some of the daylight scenes. The young David backstory is a bit desaturated evoking the feeling of watching slightly faded memories (or old film). While there are a few minor issues, they are more likely an intentional effect by the director or cinematographer, and having not seen the film in a movie theater, I can't compare this transfer to justify knocking the video score by 1/2 point or so.

The audio (my area of expertise) is where this movie really shines. While I was not a big fan of DTS in ye olde LD/DVD days (they tended to use a different mix than Dolby did, often gooseing the surround and LFE levels by a few dB) the DTS-MA soundtrack is flawless. Just to clear up some apparent confusion, DTS-MA and Dolby TrueHD are LOSSLESS audio codecs, and as such use only data packing and NO perceptual encoding. The decoded sountrack is a bit for bit copy of the 5.1 (or 7.1) 'uncompressed' PCM, and there is not (and never should be) any audible difference, but there is a difference in the amount of disc space needed for the audio. And because they require fewer bits/second, they allow a higher bit rate for a better video encode, more extras, and a higher sample frequency and/or bit depth per sample than the LPCM version typicaly would have. For example: going from a 48KHz sample rate to 96KHz PCM would double the data rate per channel, and greatly reduce the available data rate for the video encode. However, making the same change with the PCM souce for a DTS-MA or Dolby TrueHD encode would tyically mean only a slight (1.1-1.6 times) increase in the encoded audio data rate as the codecs would not waste data encoding a -80to120dB ultrasonic noise floor, but would encode the occasional ultrasonic signal when there is one.
Now, with that being said, the soundtrack was clean and crisp with intelligent use of the surround channels, avoiding the temptation of a heavy hand (unlike the early days of 5.1 audio; which were much like the early days of 'ping-pong' 2ch stereo) only pulling our attention off-screen during action heavy scenes when alot was happening beyond the edges of what the camera can show us. Of particular note was the sound effects used whenever David or Griffin teleport. While some have noted that the effect seems a bit subdued, that is mainly because a good deal of the bass is below 25Hz or so. I noticed that both the level and spectrum of the sound effect varied with the distance covered, the emotional state of the telepoter, and volume & density of the air around them, and any other people/objects along for the ride. Some of the jumps contained such high levels of 20-80Hz and subsonic bursts & partilals, that I was nearly thrown from my couch!!! I have only taken notes on the first 3 chapters so far, but 2 noteable non-jump subsonic instances are: Chptr#1, (@ 3:46) after Millie calls out to David for the last time (and @ 3:52, when he is underwater) there are some big subsonic partials; and Chptr#3, (@ 8:24-8:30) while David is talking to the hotel clerk there are some mid-level subsonic pulses that are part of the music!!! This seemed odd, till I reminded myself that the Director, Doug Liman (he of the Bourne series) liked to put some low to mid (volume) level subsonics in the 'Bourne' movies durring tense moments that had the typical 20-60Hz 'tension' rumble or hum, especially the 'confrontation' scene near the end of 'the Bourne Ulitimatum', that made my homemade tactile transducers go friggin' nuts!!! Boy, I can hardly wait for those movies to come out on Blu-ray (get to it Universal). I will post any futher scenes of T.T. note as soon as I get a chance to take notes on the rest of the movie (Jumper). So far I'd give it a solid 8.0 on the ROHSDN scale.

As for the extras: they are sufficient, but I for one was left wanting more, I just hope they are not holding any extras back for the "Super Duper Deluxe, 'and this time we mean it', edition they put out right before the sequel with the 'movie cash' coupon for "Jumper 2: Electric Bugaloo". Seriously though, they were quite good, and cleared up the few questions I had after seeing the movie for the first time. I also liked the fact that they include a version of the PiP featurette for those with BD Profile 1.0 players, very thoughtfull, though they contain little that is not included in the other extras. I have not tried it in my PS3 to see how the PiP thing works, but I will someday.

Overall, this is a good movie with an intriguing (if not entirely original) premise and a refreshing take on how a real person, with issues and problems they would rather escape than fix, would react to finding they can litteraly 'jump' away to freedom. The main character does have his reasons for why he behaves the way he does, and does have an arc, he doesn't become a 'hero' in the end, but he does change and learn from his mistakes (eventualy). While the director could have slapped a big 'To Be Continued' at the end, it is clear that we are being set up for a possible sequel, and hopefully for a trilogy at least. While the plot and charcters may not be 'Shakespearian', they are more than sufficient for this story. Just don't go into this movie expecting too much, and you might just be suprised by what you find.

After reading some review, i expect this movie to be bad, but was opposite than I thought, is actually not bad, the acting is horrible and the beginnign took sometime to get used to it, but the effect of teleport is very good, the action scene really outdone this one, amazing CG and effect, that one worh the admission of rent for sure, audio is great, definitite worth a rental for sure, wh

Very good Movie

This movie is much better than blu-ray.com say it is. This movie has a good story line and some great action, and has you asking yourself two very good questions: What would you do with this power? Is it right for someone to have this kind of power? As to the question of why the Paladins are attacking the Jumpers... They're religious fanatics, do they really need a reason? The Picture Quality is very good, but not stellar. Audio sounds great, but there is no uncompressed PCM. Extras are plentiful and enjoyable. This is a great popcorn flick. Not the best film ever made, but much better than blu-ray.com gives it credit for.

Not as Bad as I expected

I actually avoided this movie time and time again since it's release. The other night my wife and Kids go out to rent a movie and bring this one back so I grimaced and said "OK" I'll watch it.....

The movie had a surprising pace to it. No lulls to put you to sleep and it really makes use of the 88 minutes....with a story like this, I think the movie has to move quickly or risk losing the viewer. It never lost me, although it didn't make me sit on the edge of my seat. My kids however, the oldest of which is 12 really enjoyed it.....for him the action was great....so maybe the pre-teen to 24 is the target audience??? Who cares....it's entertainment and I was entertained. Would I watch it again? ....no....but did I completely waste my time?....no.

When you watch a movie like this you have to know what you are getting.......sci-fi, action thriller....though the movie maker could have given us a little more history and insight into what makes a jumper a jumper.....we are left trying to figure out a lot of things for ourself.

Good scenery, very good video transfer, crisp and clean. The sound was good, not a perfect 5 but good enough for a rental....not a movie I would buy but is it worth the $6.00 to rent it....SURE IT IS.

One of my wish as a kid was to teleport.

Man I remember one of the biggest wishes I had as a kid was having the ability to teleport. This is the first time I have ever seen jumper. I'm very glad it was on Blu ray. I say this because if I would've seen it on STD DVD it probably wouldn't have been that great for me. the movie starts off great didn't think they would start it off so fast. I thought it was gonna be this long boring story about this kid that can teleport. Well I was wrong right a way action or should I say it got to the point rather quickly. Which in this case i didn't mind. great story had me wishing again for the ability to teleport. I was expecting more of a bad ass Samuel L. Jackson. I honestly believe they could've done without Samuel L. Jackson.

PQ ok nothing great some parts good, other parts I think they were lazy.

Audio on the action sequences were great. it made my 5.1 sound really good. and I had it pretty low. Audio made this movie that more entertaining.

overall this movie is a must rent. very entertaining and exciting. I enjoyed this movie I know many will just keep an open mind. but I have to say save your money until it's on sale.

Jumper

After reading the review, and having ordered already from Amazon, I thought I must have made a mistake.
Then I read the review in DVD Empire and it was a 180 from the one in Blu-Ray.com, and I felt a little better.
I really think the reviewer here needs an enema.
We (in our mid 70s) enjoyed the movie a whole lot. Excellent picture quality, almost as good as PATTON which is, so far, the best vieo transfer to date, and decent quality sound.

We measure a movie by entertainment value... were we enjoying ourselves for the past two hours? We sure were! Good story... easy to follow especially for Capt. James T. Kirk fans and the transporter in Star Trek.

Samuel L. Jackson played the evil villain, and did a creditable job...
The weapon used against Jumper and his friend were formidable so he wasn't omnipotent.
... and I got the feeling we will see Jumper II in the future.

Measured on the was I entertained scale.... a 5.0. Measured on the could have been better made technically scale.... a 4.0; after seeing Patton using the MPEG 4 AVC coding, I am holding the transfer people to a higher standard.

Get this movie.... you wont be sorry.

Worth a look-

After reading some of the terrible reviews of this movie, I almost didn't bother to watch it. But I'm glad that I put aside all of that rubbish and gave it a look. I'm not gonna bore you with a long review so I'll just say that I enjoyed the movie. I think the first act is the best part and the rest is pretty decent. Yeah, there are some plot holes and the main character isn't a great actor but hey... it was a rental, so no harm no foul.

Good movie worth buying to show off your system

I'd agree that this is a better movie than you would expect. I rented it first with very little expectations but it really surprised me on how entertaining and well crafted the movie was. No masterpiece but well worth buying cheap off eBay! The chick in this movie is HOT!
Some of the best PQ and AQ that I have seen yet...the sound was amazing and all the levels were right on

Not the best movie

The Movie:
When I watched this blu-ray I went into it not expecting too much from it. So I wasn't
disappointed when the movie turned out to not be so great. While that is my personal opinion I do
have some reasons why.
1.) The length of the movie does not allow the viewer to create a good connection with the main
characters. There were moments that got my interest but just skipped to something else and just
left me hanging.
2.)The movie seemed too ambitious. What I mean by that is...It took the idea of jumping and
didn't do anything special with it. Basically throughout the entire movie the jumping effects were
the same. The directors idea of changing things up was to just make the main character jump and
be able to bring larger things with him. The idea for this movie left room for some incredible
camera angles/effects that were not further explored. I had really hoped to see some cool things.
If this movie had been released eight years ago it would impress ( as far as special effects I mean)
but by todays standards some music videos are doing things on par with these effects.
3.)Was there a point to this movie? Now I'm the last person to expect substance from every movie
that I see. Some movies serve the purpose just to have that wow factor. But as mentioned above
I don't even think it had that, so where does that leave me? It makes me expect more from the
story (which there was none) that seemed to only have two acts and then just end. The two acts
being the explanation of our "hero" finding out his abilities and being on his own. And the second
act with him finding out there are people out there that don't want him around and getting rid of
them.

Video:
Viewed on a 92 inch projection screen in 1080i
I was very impressed with this picture quality. The details are super sharp and while there are a lot
of blu-rays that look great many of them have a softer quality to them (I'm sure this is due to the
directors decision and not the blu-ray transfers). So it was a good change to watch a blu-ray that
was so sharp in many areas. This is appropriate as well due to the fact that many famous
landmarks are showcased in this movie.

Audio:
System is a 7.2 (2 subs) with a Pioneer receiver
While the audio was clean and direct I feel like it was too muted. Base was there but not as in your
face as I have heard on other blu-rays where the movie was of an even calmer nature. I always
felt like I should turn it up more but even when dialogue was good and loud there was still not too
much impact. The aggressiveness of the audio lends itself better to a movie with a lot of dialogue
not action.

Overall 3.5

Spectacular scenery and visuals

Jumper is a very solid movie, I believe the reasons for some of the negative reviews rely on the potential this movie had, but missed. Throw a few different actors in this movie, I could have seen Shia Labeouf play the lead role instead of Hayden Christensen. And the fact that Samuel L. Jacksons role seemed silly with the same lines being said by him, and his Siquo like hair.

This movie could have been one of the best of the year, but, the acting, or lack of acting and lack of developing the plot, kept this film from hitting it's true potential. It's definately worth renting, but, not sure about purchasing. It would have been nice if the movie would have started with Jumpers being hunted down in the past through time, and flashbacks of how the Paladins came into existence, possibly Jumper 2 will touch on this.
