Very Different Vampire Story...

This movie was very different. First let me comment on the video and audio of the film.
The video was crystal clear and the audio was to die for!I love the sound track in this movie, like the other two posters. I have watched the movie twice.
First with the English (Over Dub) DTS-HD Master Audio. Couldn't quite get used to the out of sync lip movements...quite annoying actually. Then this morning I decided to check out the movie using the Original Swedish DTS-HD Master Audio track along with the English Sub-Title. I must say that it was a much better experience with the Swedish track and reading the english sub-title. Also, the english audio version of the film doesn't match up with some of the english subtitles of the actual Swedish Language. Important dialogue.
There are several dialogue passages that has a total different meaning than the English Over-Dub track. This movie was very touching in alot of ways.... I mean sure there are some graphic scenes in the movie for sure. But the relationship between Elie and Osker was was very sweet and engaging. I also must say that this is the first vampire movie that I have ever seen that could actually be believable. I mean the day to day existence of a cursed human being/vampire....how it would actually be.
I enjoyed the movie.

Subtitles not the same as in theaters!

I had seen this great and amazing film in a movie theater as well as a DVD screener so I knew a lot of the dialogue already. As I watched the blu-ray the subtitles were changed. I popped my screener into my computer and played my BD the same time and the subs do not match up and change the scenes a lot. It feels like the movie was dumbed down. Here is a link that shows the difference. The site has screen captures from the DVD screener and captures from the BD.

Strangely moving

The first thing I'd like to say is the movie was very well done with complete unknowns. It conveyed emotions that are not usually seen in movies and did it convincingly. I think what most people skip over is that this is really a coming of age love story and one that shows you can find love with anyone or anything and right or wrong we all want to be loved. The young actors were believable as young, confused children not really knowing what they were dealing with emotionally or with this vampire situation that was thrust upon one of them. It starts out slow but it really needed to do it just that way. There are some tense moments and some gore what I like most was the way it ended because the male lead has made a choice and we are left wondering which one he made. I hope I haven't given too much away, though, I don't think so. You should see this movie and not expect the usual hollywood action movie hi-jinks that you may be expecting. This is another example of why I watch a lot of independent movies; they can work outside the business as usual that we get from most of the major studio works. PQ & AQ were both outstanding. Not too much in the extras but that too is ok. I do recommend watching this in the swedish flavor with english subtitles to get the real effect! The DTS-MA-HD 5.1 was at times very, very powerfull and at just the right moments!

Just Buy It

Having heard many good things about this film, I had to pick it up. And i'm glad I did. This movie is fantastic. (i'm not going into detail, you'll have to see it for yourself).

Picture quality is fantastic. This movie stunned me from the get go. The best foreign film i've seen on Blu Ray.

Audio got the job done, fantastic score.

Extras. behind the scenes was nice, but I would have loved to have heard a commentary.

Just go out and buy this movie!

This Is The Right One To Let In

I have heard almost nothing bad about this movie. I was interested to see this one, but was not playing in a theater near me, so waited for it to come to Blu-Ray. It was a blind buy that I am very proud to of bought it. The video quality was great, even though 99.9% of the movie was dark, you could still see everything very clearly. The audio was loud, clear, and great to hear. The extras were interesting and had a lot of information that has a lot of fun facts. Overall, this movie is one of the best vampire movies ever made. I thought it was interesting to see what happens to a vampire if they come into a house uninvited, they never quite explain that in vampire movies. This movie expands more on vampires and their codes. This is a must buy. This disc is of my highest recommendations.

Beautiful film

I went in with the hopes of liking this film but with my usual reservations of being let down by critics. I was wrong in both senses... I loved this movie.

This is by far one of the most beautiful examples of everything just coming together right. Cinematography, script, score, acting, etc...
There is no need to make over-the-top statements about this film being the best this or that. Just enjoy it for what it is... which is a well-executed film that never tries to be anything more than needs be.
First move in long time that held my attention for the entire length of the film. I wish I saw this in the theater.

As far as the BD goes, the video quality is stunning as well as the audio. Although the English subtitles in the US version aren't exact, it still works very well. However if you're going to purchase this title, then I would wait for the updated translation mentioned by previous reviews. Either way, I highly recommend this film!

Want A Real Vampyre Flick!?

I just came across this movie for sale at my local Hollywood Video for $15.00 and man am I glad I bought it! I can't believe this movie flew under my radar for so long! Story is awesome!, VQ and color is perfect. I know there are a lot of grips about the earlier release's dumbed down sub titles but mine seems to be updated with the OG Theater version. If your a vampire genre lover then this movie is a must have in your collection! I read there is a U.S. remake off the OG book coming out in 2010. I just hope it isn't cheesy! I find it hard to believe it will top the OG Swedish version though. A++

A one-of-a-kind must own

If you're looking for a unique vampire movie this is it. It's a great story with heart and depth, great acting and characters, and a satisfying, great ending. It's actually quite a tasteful vampire movie and explains a few things about vampires as well. It's quite interesting. This is more story than it is vampire action and moves along at a methodical pace. Great PQ and the AQ is fine though nothing reference quality as it's a fairly quiet movie.

Twilight who?

This is a great vampire love story. The children that are in the lead roles are phenomenal actors. Video quality is stellar. Best snow on Blu-Ray so far. Looks like a postcard at times. Audio quality is great also. Great soundtrack. Don't watch the English dubbed version though. It's not voiced well and ruins the whole experience. Watch the Swedish version to get the proper feel of the movie. Don't let the subtitle problem dissuade you, it's still a very solid film.

my top three best of 2008

Saw it in theatre the first time and just fell in love with the story. haven't had the pleasure of watching this type of 'romance' in a while. Even more surprised when I finally got to watch it again on Blu. Picture Quality is near flawless, much better than in theater. Colors pop out, skin tones are good and the clarity of the entire film is just amazing. Audio also top notch, you can hear the distant howling winter wind in the background and it gives a chilling, haunting effect.
Only gave it a 4 because of the issue with the english subtitle. It is a different version from the one i saw in theater, which was much better and not dumbed down like the dvd/blu version.

They let the wrong subtitles in

I returned my copy of the Blu-ray to Amazon when I found out that the English subtitles in the American Blu-ray and DVD were drastically changed. In many ways, they were dumbed down, and lacking emotion and the dark humor that is in the film. After many a blogger brought this up, Magnet/Magnolia Pictures made a statement, saying they were going to include the original theatrical subtitles from each pressing here on out.

So, there will be two versions of the American Blu-ray and DVD out there: those with the wrong subtitles and those with the correct (theatrical) subtitles.

I returned my Blu-ray to Amazon, claiming it was defective and they allowed it. No word on when the new version will be available, but the specs on the back of the Blu-ray case will say Subtitles: English (THEATRICAL), Spanish on the new ones.

Also, Magnet/Magnolia isn't performing an exchange program, so some people are stuck with their copies.

Hope this helps people. Here is a link to some screen shots between the theatrical subtitles and the poorly-translated ones: http://tinyurl.com/dd7c3m

UK version superior to US version overall

I found the two soundtracks sounded very similar. US has lossless DTS-HD MA, UK is DTS. I have the ability to decode lossy audio and had a hard time picking the difference.

A huge bonus of the UK release is the inclusion of an audio commentary (with the director and novelist/screenplay writer) that is not on the US release. I have listened to half of it's excellent. Very worthwhile to listen to.

And of course the UK release has the correct and original theatrical subtitles. The US version does not have the correct subs, which caused much uproar upon discovery.

So I would recommend the UK version because of the theatrical subs and audio commentary. I found very little difference between the soundtracks, so lack of lossless on the UK release isn't a huge deal.

Beautiful film

As I was watching it for the second time, I found myself paying less and less attention to the subtitles. Eventually I realized that this film has very little dialogue and needs even less. You could easily watch this in it's native Swedish without the English subtitles and completely understand what's going on. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but what it means is the actors and the director are doing more with body language than they ever could with words. It's just a masterpiece in that respect.
The video quality is superb, and most of the outdoor, daylight scenes are absolutely gorgeous with the snow blanketing the ground. You'll need to watch this with a blanket because you will feel like you're there in the bitter cold with them.
The audio is also fantastic. I was surprised at the amount of LFE that was present and very tastefully incorporated. The score is also fantastic.
This has become one of my favorite films, and here it is presented on a great disc, with above average A/V quality. However, please do not blind buy this one. Rent it first, as it is a very unique film that will not resonate with some viewers.

Rare Achievement

Personally, there are very few new films made today that are worth owning, Blu-Ray or not. Sure, I'm
like most people and enjoy the PQ/AQ of blockbuster titles such as POTC, Batman, Transformers, Pixar,
etc., but new titles worth more than a single viewing are few and far between. For the horror fan, to
find a fresh, unique take on such well (and often poorly) travelled ground is a welcome surprise.

LTROI is such a film, and is definitely a worthwhile add to any collection that is rich in challenging
films. Beautifully directed, shot, scored with excellent PQ/AQ to match, it strikes a subtle balance
between horror and suspense while keeping the viewer on their toes. Bravo!

"be me a little..."

Wow, this movie was terrific!!!

After the first hour I was like "this sucks...what a letdown"

The second hour KNOCKED ME ON MY A@S!!!

I started with English DTS-HD, then couldn't take the corny off-sync audio, so switched to a more natural Swedish DTS-HD and English subtitles...a million times better!! and more authentic!! i think part of this movie experience is hearing the language.

The "be me a little..." scene was unforgettable, one of the best I've scene in any movie in a while. This was easily the most realistic vampire movie, kind of like a "batman begins" for vampires..you really think "this is not fantasy, this is actually happening"...something you'd NEVER think watching Blade, Underworld, Bram Stoker's, etc.

I liked Ebert's incite: "We learn that a vampire must be invited into a room before it can enter. Now the title makes sense." Makes perfect sense!!!

Video and Audio were very good, 4.0

Let this one into your blu-ray collection!

I'm always wary of hype, particularly with foreign films as there's always an implied "movie snob" air to some of it, but in this rare case it's totally justified. THE best vampire movie and probably the best movie I've seen in a few years. Cold, quiet and depressing, yet really touching with many scenes that stick with you. The child actors are just amazing. The gore is here as well, but it's more tasteful than there for shock value (though it's well appreciated in the final scenes, that's for sure!).

I had rented the DVD first (I'm being more careful with blind buys these days) and the BD is a HUGE improvement over it. The BD's picture is razor sharp and seems to be free of DNR. This is a bleak picture due to the location, night scenes and winter setting, but the when colors do come into play they are much more accurate and deeper than the DVD. The blood looks truly realistic in color and texture now, almost disturbingly so, particularly the scene where it's running down Eli's face.

The Swedish DTS-MA 5.1 audio is excellent as well. I definitely recommend avoiding the English dub. This is not a bombastic audio movie, but the dynamic range is excellent. You can almost hear the snowflakes tinkling in the opening and closing scenes and then get knocked out of your seat when a bus drives by on an overpass.

Extras are nice if not substantial. We get four pretty good deleted scenes (I think they were in HD as well), a short but really informative making-of featurette and a couple of galleries for posters and still shots. I would've loved a commentary on this, as the director seems to speak fluent English in the featurette.

Overall, I couldn't recommend this more as a must-have BD.
