The UK version is the better buy compared to US version
Good review of the disc by the reviewer, however I disagree on his selection of the US disc as the preferred version to buy.
I found the two soundtracks sounded very similar. I have the ability to decode lossy audio and had a hard time picking the difference.
A huge bonus of the UK release is the inclusion of an audio commentary (with the director and novelist/screenplay writer) that is not on the US release. I have listened to half of it's excellent. Very worthwhile to listen to.
And of course the UK release has the correct and original theatrical subtitles. The US version does not have the correct subs, which caused much uproar upon discovery.
So I would recommend the UK version because of the theatrical subs and audio commentary. I found very little difference between the soundtracks, so lack of lossless on the UK release isn't a huge deal. |

UK subs > US audio
Have to agree with nickows here. The US version was much maligned in relation to it's subtitles; how anybody could recommend it over this corrected version is mind boggling. Obviously, if this was an English language film, it would be a different matter.
Personally I found the video to be perfectly adequate, without being mind blowing (given the nature of the film, I don't suppose it was ever going to be). Sound is decent.
The film itself is excellent, if somewhat lacking in depth compared to the novel. Regardless, 'Let The Right One In' is a unique and touching entry in Vampire Cinema. |

Excellent movie and BD (new pressing has lossless DTS-MA)
I'm always wary of hype, particularly with foreign films as there's always an implied "movie snob" air to some of it, but in this rare case it's totally justified. THE best vampire movie and probably the best movie I've seen in a few years. Cold, quiet and depressing, yet really touching with many scenes that stick with you. The child actors are just amazing. The gore is here as well, but it's more tasteful than there for shock value (though it's well appreciated in the final scenes, that's for sure!).
I have both this and the original US Blu-ray which had the "mis-translated" subtitles (recently fixed on the last pressing). This UK release has the correct theatrical subtitles. I'll point out any other differences below.
The BD's picture is razor sharp and seems to be free of DNR. This is a bleak picture due to the location, night scenes and winter setting, but the when colors do come into play they are deep and accurate. The blood looks truly realistic in color and texture now, almost disturbingly so, particularly the scene where it's running down Eli's face. PQ is identical to the US disc.
The Swedish DTS-MA 5.1 audio is excellent as well and is identical to the US track. Please note the original pressing of this disc had a bad flag which would not enable the lossless DTS-MA track on players, so you would only get core DTS. As of Jan 2010, they have been repressed and the full DTS-MA track is working. This is not a bombastic audio movie, but the dynamic range is excellent. You can almost hear the snowflakes tinkling in the opening and closing scenes and then get knocked out of your seat when a bus drives by on an overpass. This disc also gets rid of the craptastic English dub track from the US disc.
Extras are OK. There's a few deleted scenes, a picture gallery (which I couldn't get to work in my US player, probably a PAL issue), the trailer (not on the US Blu) and an excellent commentary track (in English) by the director and book author (not on the US Blu). The US blu had a short making-of featurette that is not on this UK disc. The UK disc loses the scene bookmarking feature.
Overall, I couldn't recommend this more as a must-have BD. I would probably recommend this UK version over the (corrected) US disc for the excellent commentary track in lieu of the making-of featurette. |

Frozen stif and bored stupid
Never mind bickering about the audio ...... what does it matter when the whole experience is as frigid ( joke) as this ? Sure, it's novelty to mix pre - pubescent love with vampirism but the emotional heat generated never threatens to melt the permafrost .It's a sad reflection upon both the film industry and bored horror fans when stuff like this gets folk excited . |
