Another flawless Sony transfer.
Just got through watching Memoirs. The video transfer is without flaw and very film-like (as it should be) but with great detail. The audio is excellent with clear dialog and effective surround effects where appropriate.
There was something new to Blu-ray disks I have never seen...a "Loading" overlay as the player (apparently) is loading a bunch of Java code for the extras. So, be prepared to wait almost three minutes elapsed time from closing the disk tray to the main menu. |

Very underrated movie
This movie deserves so much more than Kenneth Brown's 2.5/5
I wont write a novel. But if you haven't seen it please give it a rent. You wont be disappointed. |

Masterpiece
The movie itself was very well done. Very close to the book (as much as they could put in for 2 hours and 35 minutes!). I did feel Hatsumomo wasn't quite as malicious and evil as in the book, though. Gong Li could have been just a bit crueler with her expressions. She came through best when she was hurt, though I felt myself feeling maybe too sorry for her personally, instead of for every geisha in the sad situation of oppressed love. She did an amazing job when in rage, though, never losing her character (not that she ever did in the first place). In the book Nobu is roughed up a bit more from the war than in the movie, but as it is a movie I see why they wouldn't want him to look too displeasing. The imagery was magnificent, with gorgeous perspectives of the old Japanese towns, authentically recreated to look like the 1930's.
The video quality jumps off the screen in vivid imagery that is the movie itself, and nighttime is just as good as day. The movie is all about color and detail, and it really shows.
The audio is very pleasant. Voices are clear, though sometimes a little too quite, while every syllable of the music has never a dull moment and never interferes with the actors and actresses’ performances (enhancing it, really).
Extras are very detailed, and would get 5 stars if they weren't letterbox widescreen. For a 50GB blu-ray disk, they very well could have made them 16x9. Despite the aspect ratio, however, every aspect of the film (and even the novel) is covered throughout these detailed featurettes. I never listened to the commentary, but there are multiple choices from the director, to the author of the novel itself. It is sure to give a lot of detailed information for whoever may want to hear it.
With beautiful imagery and a strong storyline, Memoirs of a Geisha shines light on a time period that isn't quite what it was, and makes you feel part of both that time period and the characters part of it. |

Solid Movie
Very entertaining movie on all fronts. Would have given more for PQ, but I have a HDTV and the images were so soft that I bet there would be no noticeable difference between an upgraded dvd. Even tried turning up my sharpness dial to over 75% and still soft as a sponge. Don't get me wrong as the colors are vibrant and the settings are a masterpiece, just overly overly soft. Rent first. |
