Natural Born Killers

I agree with Adam.cook. The Blu-ray.co review seems like a knee-jerk reaction to the movie. Several words were misspelled and the tone seemed rather angry, as if the reviewer just watched it for the first time.

I think NBK is a movie that you have to see several times to really get. Kind of like No Country for Old Men. I had to read the book and then watch the movie again before I truly appreciated its greatness. I enjoyed NBK more on BR than I did on DVD and I am about 8 years older now than when I saw it for the first time. The PQ and AQ are not reference quality for showing off your high def gear, but this is the best looking and sounding NBK you can get. I only skimmed through the extras, but they seemed about average.

One of the best films of the 90's

For fans of Oliver Stone this is a must have for your collection.

NBK was met with mixed reviews when it was released in 1994, and over the last 14 years public opinion has not changed much. It's somewhat of a satire, an excellent study on America and it's fascination with violence and the media. You either love the film, or hate it. And the same people who hate this film are the same people who the film-makers were laughing at when they made it.

MOVIE earns a 4.5

The PQ is simply the best I have seen for this film on any media. Understand that Stone switched between 35mm, Super 16, and Hi 8mm all throughout the film. The grain you see is intentional. Colors and saturation are perfect on the 35mm footage, and naturally "bland" for the 16mm and 8mm scenes.

However I have seen better transfers on other BD titles.

VIDEO earns a 3.5

The Audio is hard for me to comment on, as I currently have no A/V receiver. It's unfortunate because NBK had easily one of the best sountracks to come out of a movie in the 90's. I am also a huge Nine Inch Nails fan, and as I'm sure your aware Trent Reznor produced the soundtrack for NBK.

Unfortunately I can't leave audio at Not Rated, so I will simply rate the quality of the soundtrack

AUDIO earns a 3.5

The extras included on the disc consist of a trailer, director commentary (highly recommended) and a handful of deleted scenes. Nothing really new here, but better than nothing.

The production notes included in the controversial "coffee table" packaging are nice and worth a read.

EXTRAS earns a 2.5

In closing if your a Oliver Stone fan this is a worthwhile BD to add to your collection. This film is as relevant today as it was when it was first released.

Natural Born Killers

I was absolutely shocked by the ignorance of whoever reviewed this, making it the first review on blu-ray.com i was so upset by that I felt compelled to comment. Natural Born Killers is a masterpiece. The reviewer misinterpreted most of the film. It's main subject is the media, and how the public supports it. If there were two charismatic killers, we would be fascinated, and the media would be in a frenzy. This is a perfect look at a vital flaw in our society. It also happens to be one of the best directed films of the 90s. Out of my collection, this is one of my favourite blu-rays, and I reccomend it to any appreciator of film as art.

I agree with those above

Those not understanding need to watch the movie again. NBK was brilliant filmmaking. On par with Reservoir Dogs & Pulp Fiction. It is one of Oliver Stone's best films and completely changed the way I view Woody Harrelson as an actor. A far better film than what the official review states in my opinion. And to the two reviews above (well below I guess) me, LilShank357 and CarmelBeetle, rating a movie a half star but not actually watching it is asinine, and you are opening yourself up for ridicule. "The director belongs in a Nut House" and "half of the violence in it looks so crappy and fake and not to mention is in black and white" are two of the most ridiculous things I have ever read in a user review.

An Intriguing Movie...

The satire in Natural Born Killers is more noticeable to me now than it was in 1994 when I first viewed the film. I have great respect for Mr. Stone and what he was capturing in this film. Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis were perfectly cast as the modern day version of Bonnie and Clyde. Being a huge Robert Downey, Jr fan, I found his casting as Wayne Gale hilarious. This is a very humorous film and is extremely representative to how we Americans make celebrities out of our serial killers. The PQ on Blu-ray disc is the best PQ I've seen for this flim. The AQ isn't too shabby either. Still wishing for some more behind the scenes extras....

Can someone please write a new "official" review for this site?

While I'm not about to say NBK is the best thing since sliced bread, there is no way that it's as bad as the official reviewer tries to paint it.

When this film was first released, it was highly controversial. With this review, I see that the controversy hasn't really abated over the past 14 years.

As for the film itself - I don't think anyone, even Oliver Stone himself, takes it seriously. It's a stylized, over-the-top multi-media nightmare that goes off in your mind like a hand grenade in slow motion. From start to finish, the film attempts to do nothing other than to assault your senses with an unrelenting barrage of images and sounds - all of which come from a multitude of formats.

The reviewer gave the Blu-ray release low marks for video presentation. How so? Perhaps the reviewer did not see this film when it was in its original theatrical run. Having seen it several times in different theaters, I can attest to the fact that this Blu-ray presentation is as close to the theatrical experience as you can get. The only thing it lacks is the size. Seeing Super-8 footage projected on a huge movie screen then having it quickly intercut with 35mm technicolor and video sources causes your brain to cry out for mercy. To me, the alternating format changes and the rapid-fire editing - many times clearly cutting across different takes of the same shot - was far more unsettling than any of the violence depicted on screen. Add to this the varying quality of the sound as it cuts from hand-held camcorders to full-blown Hollywood film sound, and it all adds up to a singularly unique film experience. On Blu-ray, all of these formats are accurately represented - flaws and all. How can you give the video presentation low marks because the director chose to use Super 8 film stock in certain scenes? On the contrary - I applaud the transfer of this film because it likely took extra effort to make sense of all the varying formats and to get them all to translate to what is, in my opinion, a very fine example of what Blu-ray can deliver.

The person who provided the blu-ray.com review for this film clearly missed the point, and the site would do well to find another reviewer to provide a more insightful analysis of this Blu-ray release.

Love it or hate it

This movie has always had very mixed reviews. I really love this flick because I have never seen anything else like it. The images through out the film really help you understand the mind set of Mickey and Mallory. I wish more film makers would think out of the box instead of releasing 500 crappy, quick buck movies this year. Everybody who is complaining about the way the picture looks needs to understand something...this movie was shot with all kinds of different cameras and it is supposed to look grainy and gritty like the story. Go back and rewatch parts and compair. Do you really think they could clean up only certain scenes. IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE THAT WAY. As for all of you who hated this don't worry there's lots of boy meets girl falls in love movies coming out this year.

Nice satire

Natural Born Killers generated mixed feelings from the group of us that went to see it at the theater in 1994 and it still seems to cause the same reaction today. As long as you bear in mind that it's a satire, I think the movie generates the appropriate response and feelings. For whatever reason, not everyone in our group (at the time) saw it that way and that's part of the reason I think it's a movie that you need to see more than once. It's definitely not a very typical movie so it can be somewhat of a shock the first time you see it. IMO, that probably makes it a little tougher to absorb or understand all that's going on. So, if anyone hasn't actually seen the movie yet, I'd highly recommend watching it at least twice before deciding how you feel about it.

Having said that, I really enjoyed watching the movie again and even though I've seen it several times, there always seems to be something new to discover, that I somehow missed during the other viewings. IMO, that gives the movie a very high replay value.

As for the technical aspects of the blu-ray, I really have no idea how to judge them, especially the picture quality. It's better to just experience it for yourself rather than trying to explain it. The best I can come up with is that it looks and sounds better than the DVD and I really like the soundtrack.

Bottom-line, I think it's a movie you need to see for yourself and not rely on reviews or other opinions.

An Accurate Representation Of The Film, But Not Demo Material

This is really a difficult film to comment on in terms of picture quality--the movie is a mish-mash of footage shot on various formats, including 35mm, 16mm, 8mm and even standard NTSC video; so the look rapidly fluctuates from sharp & crisp images to grainy black white images. But nonetheless it was the intended psychedelic look that Oliver Stone wanted, and it certainly is one hell of a mind-trip. It's these images that first drew me into the film, and the pulsating soundtrack including some NIN songs and Leonard Cohen stuff thrown into the mix. I've seen it about twice on DVD, and was eager to see it on Blu-ray too; and I'm greatly satisfied with the disc. But it's in no way demo-material, and was never intended to be that way either. If you are a fan of the film, I recommend this disc.

NBK is a great movie, even better perhaps on Blu-ray although, I do no

Both LiLShAnK357 (stupid name by the way) and CarmelBeetle are dumb, simply put. DUMB. You obviously do not know artistic films at all. I suppose you prefer simple films for your simple mind. Complexity is obviously wasted on you both. Only true intelligence could see NBK for what it is. Granted, when Tarantino wrote this, Stone felt like changing into his view, so Tarantino dropped out after getting pissed. That is just a little side note. I wish Best Buy did not take it back for you CarmelBeetle, you deserve to get stuck with a movie you dislike. Both of you should watch it again. By the way, LiLShAnK357 the violence is not just in black and white. Try staying awake, kid.

Natural Born Killers

What Adam and Schrute said... a very poor blu-ray.com review of a brilliant movie. The PQ ist actually excellent considering the source materials. Here is what Robert A. Harris had to say about this disc:

"Oliver Stone's 1994 opus on violence and celebrity is a film that people either love or hate. Few don't have an opinion. I find it to be brilliant filmmaking -- think Godard with a budget.

Filmed with every possible taking mechanism short of sun pictures and pin cameras, it is a beautifully and frenetically edited melange of images in a film much like those derived from graphic novels, but pre-dating them.

This is what Blu-Ray is all about. Color when there should be color. Grain when there should be grain. And everything crafted to perfection. An absolutely gorgeous piece of Blu-Ray software. Natural Born Killers is pure cinema.

Warner Home Video has taken a beautiful element of NBK, scanned it to perfection, cleaned it up, and given us an end result that is one of the most perfect renditions of film yet to hit Blu-Ray.

Very Highly Recommended."

So there you have it. It's quite simply one of the very best Blu-ray Discs available today.

Just saw this for the first time.

So i'm going to let my fiancee write the review based on my reactions last night on the seeing this movie for the 1st time;

I made him buy this movie on Blu-Ray last night at Target. I told him it was a movie he did not want to skip, and I knew he'd never seen it before. Heck, even I had forgotten how good it was.

He gets it home, pops it in the PS3 and starts watching it. Every scene, he was bug-eyed and going "What the ****???". When the scene where Mickey gets out of jail to come get Mallory happened, it brought forth a new level of interest in him.

It was bloody, it was violent, it had a sort of sardonic humor to it that only a Tarantino written movie could have.

I personally would agree that the quality isn't that great in terms of DVD vs Blu-Ray, but I never compare DVD to Blu-Ray. I compare VHS to Blu-Ray, and if it's not that much better than a VHS tape, it sucks in my book.

My fiance loved Natural Born Killers, and I think he realizes it was a good buy, especially having never seen it prior to this.

Natural born killers

Natural Born Killers

This is one of my all time favorite movies. I had not seen it in several years and watching it on Blu-Ray was like seeing it for the first time and I have rediscovered my love for this film. If you haven't seen it then you should keep in mind that Oliver Stone was taking an exaggerated satirical look at Americas obsession with violence in the media. Just watch the closing segments as the credits run and you'll notice classic new's clips from O.J. to Rodney King. This movie definitely is not for the faint of heart or easily offended.

The PQ was great considering the age if the movie and the fact that this is the way Stone intended it to look. The AQ was better then I expected and much better then it was in theatrical release or DVD.

NBK = AWESOME

Yeah i Know the VQ isnt great but thats how its suppose to be. I love this movie and its such a 90's movie and it brings back ol' memories. All i gotta say is you haters shouldnt even bother to write a review. Go write a review about A Walk to Remeber or Bambi, or somthin like that. This is a cult classic and is an awesome movie to watch when you're high in the sky.

Excellent film, biased and short-sighted review

If you wanna read a serious review try elsewhere but not here.
1 out of 5 stars? Really? C'mon!
Natural Born Killers is one of that movies that divides opinions, yet it doesn't deserve to be rated that low, at least not by a serious reviewer.

PQ: This is a tricky one to judge. Oliver Stone chose to use 18 different formats, from 8mm to 35mm, Video and everything in between. At times the movie looks like a cheap TV show, but that's how it's supposed to look. At times it looks great. Is hard to judge it as I said before. However it reproduces faithfully the intended look of the movie, That's why I'll give it 4/5. I see no reasons to rate it lower when the picture looks like it's supposed to look.

AQ: NBK boasts an excellent Dolby TrueHD track. This is a truly immersive audio track. The music by Leonard Cohen et al. sounds delightful. Natural Born Killers has never sound this good.

Supplements: Besides the extraordinary audio-commentary (the answer to most of your questions are there), and a pretty interesting segment of an interview with Charlie Rose, there's not much else, just some deleted scenes, an alternate ending and the theatrical trailer.
Plus the Blu-ray disc comes in a neat and handsome digibook that contains some interesting facts about the movie, cast and crew.

All in all NBK makes an excellent choice for cinephiles in general.

NBK disappointed transfer

NBK was one of the few movies that I enjoyed watching over and over again
I have had NBK in many forms, laserdisc and two versions of it on DVD including the
last one from the Oliver Stone set released a few years ago. I am completely
disappointed with the transfer of this Blu ray. The transfer seems to be a port and a
DVD quality to boot. Some shots do look better, a little more detailed but not overly
improved from the DVD. The sound is a bit of improvement and receives higher marks.
I am disappointed that the director's cut is not included (which adds only 3 minutes )
the extras are port over.

The two reviews before me obviously don't agree but I reviewed this movie on a
PT AE1000U projector(1080P/24) using the PS3. Sound with the Onkyo TX SR805 sound.

A bad movie is a bad movie no matter what format it's on...

Most people who love this film tend to say "you didn't understand the meaning of it" when somebody states they hated it. Well, I understood the meaning just fine. A turd is a turd no matter how much you polish it. Blu-ray won't save this garbage. I hated this film when I originally saw it in the theatre, and I hated it again on Blu-ray.
