Great first from YRF, but needs some work
I bought this BD as I was super excited to finally have a Hindi film in high def that was NOT upscaled.
MOVIE 5.0/5.0
It really depends on whether or not you like Hindi films...but even by American standards this is a great film.
Video 4.5/5.0
The video for YRF's first BD release definitely did NOT disappoint. Encoded with an MPEG-4 AVC codec there are very few artifacts and/or grain, as the movie was shot digitally, however, something worth mentioning...this film shifts between past and present for the first 40 minutes...the past looking very clean, sharp and clear of grain, however when it shifts into the present, the film takes on a fine layer of grain, bringing you back into gritty reality. Done really well. Because it is a newer movie, it's not like I got to see things that I hadn't seen before, however it was a huge improvement from the DVD release. Subtitles were actually a lot more clean than typical Hindi film home video releases. Much more smooth around the edges. Even the Arabic subtitles looked very nice.
Audio 3.0/5.0
I was disappointed that the audio was neither TrueHD or DTS-HD (Master). There was, however, a DTS lossy track which was NOT included on the original DVD release, so at least it was a step up from the DD 5.1 track. The movie definitely gives your speakers a work out. I've always been impressed with sound mixing in Hindi films as far as background noise is. This movie, like all Hindi films, is however dialogue heavy, so much of the track is center heavy.
Extras 3.5/5.0
The same extras that came on the DVD are present in standard 480i. I will say it's nice not having to get up and pop in the second disc to watch the special features, which are as follows:
-Making of the film
-Music Videos
-Making of Music Videos
-TV Interview Shows
-Theatrical trailer and promos
-Photo Gallery
Overall 4.0/5.0
This is a must buy...especially if you want a Hindi film on Blu-ray that's worth a damn. This disc is an all region one, as to be expected. Included subtitles are English, Arabic, Dutch, Tamil and Telugu. No Hindi subtitles like the original DVD. |

Good start from YRF unlike EROS!
nicodior has already posted a good review of the disc. All I want to add is that just cause its the first disc certain aspects like the absence of uncompressed or lossless audio cannot be ignored. When they want to bring out BDs they have to make sure everything is Hi-Def, else there is no point. A good upscale dvd player can do a fairly decent job of upconverting the PQ to HD. Blu-Ray is a huge market with a tremendous growth rate, if not rightly done, people will lose hope in the BDs from Indian companies which will ultimately lead to already cost conscious Indian studios to totally abandon Hi-Def sector. |

Video: Excellent PQ. I am glad that YRF did a great job on this transfer. KUDOS to them. I am going to use Sivaji BD as the benchmark. Comparing New York BD to Sivaji BD, I would defintely rate it at 7.5/10.
Audio: The DD 5.1 lossy sound track does give the surround speakers a good work out, but is missing the oomph factor. A lossless audio would have been befitting for this BD release. Nevertheless the PQ is great. Recommended.
Update: The DTS soundtrack is much better than DD 5.1. I am revising my audio rating from 3.0 to 3.5. |
