You will probably not recognize Nino Rota by name, but you have probably heard his music.
He is best known for his film scores, but has also composed ten operas, five ballets,
numerous choral and orchestral works, but most notable his string concerto. He has
recorded more than 132 albums, penned 152 film scores over his career - which
includes the famous Fellini films
Roma, Satyricon, Juliet of the Spirits, La Dolce Vita,
Nights of Cabiria and
The White Sheik. His association with Fredrico Fellini
began with the flick
Lo sceicco bianco (1952) and continued for decades after that
release. According to Fellini Nino knew exactly what he wanted he wanted, and never
needed to see the film to score it. He was able to imagine his work married with the film
entirely within himself. That takes a mighty powerful creative minds-eye to pull off, but if
you ever heard his scores for Fellini's films, you can hear the genius lurking inside him.
This Blu-ray disc contains Rota's complete music for viola and piano, and the complete works
for violin and piano. The eldest of these works are
Viola Sonata in G composed in
1934-35, and the most recent
Un Diavolo Sentimentale composed in 1969.
According to musical historians, Rota had a gift of be able to write in many different styles -
very helpful if you are writing film scores for different types of movies. I found these
compositions very lyrical and tonal, evoking colorful images to the mind that matched the
tonal colors within the composition. The music is subtle, but forceful and powerful as well.
When I listen to this music, I am reminded of another 20th century composer Samuel Barber
whose melodies sound just like Rota's.

How does this release sound? To put it succinctly, like being bathed in milk chocolate.
Featuring a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio encode at 24/96khz bit and sample rate, this recording
strikes a perfect balance between the two instruments without having to close mike them.
The recording affords us a mid hall perspective with the piano located half left, and the violin
and viola located at a half right position. There is plenty of air and space between
instruments, but not enough to split the imaging into to two separate quadrants. The sound
of the viola is gorgeous, full bodied, and smooth as silk. The piano has a big powerful
sound, but never sounds harsh or loses quality when played back at full level. At times it
sounds so full; it mimics the sound of a full string section in an orchestra. The 7.1 channels
expertly captures the halls acoustics; transparently filling my room 360 degrees with
discretely recorded reflections without sacrificing clarity. My speakers just disappeared,
walls were pushed back, and the frontal sound stage is huge. Listen for the breathing of
Marco Fornaciari, as it comes across clearly in this recording. This is one fine recording that
even "audiophiles" will find very satisfying.
