The movie sucks, but the rest is good.
First, let me say that I am a HUGE One Piece fan. This movie should not be used as a first impression or anything. Most fans of the series actually hate this movie.
Movie (1.5/5):
The worst thing about the movie is all the information and story lost. What do I mean by lost? This movie is actually a remake of an existing story arc in One Piece. One that lasts for a good amount of episodes (episodes 92-130). So basically you have 39 episodes compressed into 90 minutes. Some of that is filler, but also there is the setup for the arc as well. Obviously information is lost and there is no flow. With certain plot points taken out, those not familiar with the series will not be able to follow the movie... or at least not with the depth that story once had. So why still a 1.5? It still can be enjoyed somewhat. If you like Naruto, Bleach, or any of the big shonen series that usually revolve around fighting, the fights take up a good portion of the film. It also isn't completely impossible to follow. So watch at your own risk, but I wouldn't use it to judge One Piece if this is the first thing you are seeing for the series.
Video (4.5/5):
The video just looked awesome. I think it is my favorite video wise for all the anime Blu-rays I own. I rarely saw any problems while watching it on my TV. So if you are just looking for an anime Blu-ray that looks pretty, this may not be a bad choice.
Audio (4/5):
A few things to note here. The DVD only had 2.0 for the Japanese audio while the Blu-ray has 5.1 Dolby TruHD for both English (16-bit) and Japanese (24-bit). The English track also has the English version of the ending theme song which was missing from the DVD. Both tracks sound good.
Extras:
Trailers only for other FUNimation products.
Overall (3.5/5)
The movie kills this release.
The video looks pretty damn good though. |

An overview only, basically a summation of an otherwise great story
I'm a massively huge One Piece fan. Have been watching the series for several years, reading the manga...and even named one of my dogs after one of the main characters.
Unlike the first 7 movies, this is merely a summation of an entire arc in the One Piece story line. It does little to further the story and, really does little to help promote what is an otherwise excellent series. As I assume anyone actually reading this is an anime fan...I will say, they totally ruined this series by bringing it to the US. This series is best watched in it's original format, uncut, and definitely not dubbed. There are some things that are decent to watch dubbed, this is not one of them. Just want to be clear I'm not against all dubs....Given a choice, I would highly recommend watching the series rather than this. For anyone needing a refresher on what has happened, then perhaps this would be a good place to look. It really seems odd though that based on when this was released, they were long past this arc. My grading...1.5 only because it does serve a purpose for fans of the show. I don't really have any qualms with the video or audio. Very good quality especially as the DVDs I do own don't look anywhere near as good. |
