wow
Though I had seen "Mon Oncle" and other early Tati films, I had never seen "Play Time." After reading the bluray.com review, I picked it up the first day it was in my local store.
Wow.
What a towering work of beauty by a sublime and committed artist.
The shot design and visual clarity are on a par with "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Red Desert."
This is a breathtaking example of what can happen when a creative force is not afraid to risk (and lose) his life's savings. This movie is so far ahead of the curve in terms of directing, sound and humor AND special effects it's unbelievable. What they did with 1967 technology and 70mm film just beats the hell out of today's digital technology.
I can't say enough good things about this film. |

A true masterpiece!
Just watched this Blu-ray tonight, had never seen this before. Wow! A true masterpiece! All the rumors were true: it has no genre, and is the only movie of its kind. It reminded me of the opening ape scene in 2001, except it was 2 hours long and covered humans in paris instead of apes in the desert. If you have the patience for 2001, you'll have the patience for this...and will be generously rewarded!
THe way it was shot was great with 70mm and these are perfect for Blu: large pan shots of airport hallways and lobby's. With VCR quality, this was tough to figure out "what details are we looking at here?", but with BLu we're SOOO fortunate! We can see all the details as intended by teh director.
I love how the director uses simple large pan scenes without closeups to make his point and show a man's struggle to find meaning in an impersonal, modern world. I won't say too much more, in case you havent' seen it, but its truly incredible. one scene i loved: an apartment shot of 4 SIMULTANEOUS apartments with window walls, the shot shows people in all 4 apartments (separated by walls) simultaneously from the road, with cars going by, for 10 minutes...INCREDIBLE! we didn't need to hear the dialogue as it wasn't imperative to convey what was going on (could be shown by non-verbal), plus there was awesome comedic takes thrown in there with people in adjacent apartments...check it out!
PQ and AQ very good! |
