A Lot Better Than You've Heard... But not much more.
"Pride and Glory" is a lot better than you've heard; however, despite a taut storyline and a terrific cast the film has more or less divided critics and casual moviegoers. Mainly for complaints regarding the movie's clichéd story, its cardboard twists and turns and altogether depressing feel.
To be sure, the movie has some wonderful performances and is slightly better than that Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix cop picture (We Own the Night); though not quite as good as that Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon movie (The Departed). Both Edward Norton and Colin Farrel have no problem fleshing out these two haunted characters and their relationships with one another; as it mirrors their corrupt family of cops who mean well but end up doing so, so bad.
We've seen this story done before, sometimes a lot better. However, rarely has a mediocre script been given such a royal treatment. Colin Farrel in particular is sometimes painful to watch, his performance is the work of calculated genius (regardless of how you feel about his American accent).
Can anybody play noble and tormented better than Edward Norton? He is a mesmerizing screen presence, evoking many complex emotions, sometimes during the same moment. In certain scenes, he gives more than the scenes themselves deserve.
The movie could have benefited from a larger number of compelling female characters. The only one given any sense of depth is the terminally-ill spouse of the officer played by Noah Emmerich. One scene in particular between the two, near the end of the film strikes a huge emotional chord (and not for the same reasons you might imagine).
There are many compellingly honest scenes thrown into the whirlwind of many nonsensical ones. Too bad, since Pride and Glory could have worked much better had the story not been pulled into so many directions. The film is often grim, violent and gratuitous with its tone; though never altogether unconvincing. Certain moments ring true and perfect, such as a climatic bar fight (Now I know what you're thinking--how could a bar fight be exciting and emotionally complex?--Just watch the movie and you'll understand). However, other scenes pander and contain no shred of authenticity (an example is the Christmas Dinner Scene or the Boat House argument between Norton's character and his father). Many of the film's other over-discussed moments such as the clothing iron scene (involving an infant) are just plain exploitive and non-believable. Even if they do involve special effects and not actual bodies.
Despite good qualities, the story is far from compelling and takes a back seat to the emotional showcase. Had the film makers opted to make the movie work both as a thriller and as a human drama, it might have been classic. Characters like the father played by Jon Voight borderline caricature.
Perhaps I'm being too hard on this film. Then again maybe I'm not. In a way, movies like Pride and Glory hurt the most, since near-masterpieces are almost always more disappointing than simply bad films. Because we actually care for these people, to see them do things that seem a notch above or below reality; we often get the impulse to throw a soda can at the movie screen rather than to stand up and cheer. Mild to moderate recommendation. |

"Abusadores"
Let me start by saying I really enjoyed this film. Although the story and plot is a rehash from other films. It was still entertaining. Well scripted and cast. Along with the fantastic acting. I really like all of Edward Norton work. He did a Fantastic job with his character. It was right in his realm. Now I'm not to fond of Colin Farrell. I think he is good at times and fair for the most part. In this film he did a great job on his character. The one who complete caught me by surprise was Noah Emmerich I think he did a Fantastic job with his roll. I really like how (Pride and Glory) was scripted and directed. The Suspenseful Drama along with the graphic Violence. Very realist. Like I said this film's storyline of crooked cops being within the police force is a rehash to other Films. even though it doesn't come close to the phenomenal casting and acting of Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon,Mark Wahlberg and Jack himself. in the classic movie (The Departed). with that being said I have to give (Pride and Glory) credit where credit is due. I rate this film a lot higher then (We Own The Night and Righteous Kill) What I respect about this film and where it separates itself from the others including (The Departed) Is the realist feel the film has of unlawful police officers. Which is very relevant in today's society and we or at least I can Relate too. How it was also kept from being at least for the most part. non Hollywood threw out the film. unlike the others. Even (The Departed) Don't get me wrong (The Depart) was very Believable and realist, but the ending Which was a Fantastic Finishing touch, it was still your typical Hollywood ending. Just as Much as (Pride and Glory) That is why I decided to give it a 3.5 instead of a 4.0. you'll understand once you which it. I still feel (Pride and Glory) Had a more relating Factor to it.
PQ- very very Disappointing very grainy. Of course it's gonna have Vibrant colors it's a Blu ray. To me it lacked clarity and consistent sharpness. Now there was certain scenes that had some pretty good Detail like gun shot wounds and Blood. But it lack consistency. It my seem that I'm being way to hard on the Picture quality, But a lot of these Blu ray's are average. it's as if the producers are lazy and selling us short just cause it's on a Blu ray disc. All I'm tring to say is you wouldn't be missing much if you watched on DVD.
AQ- This is where it benefits watching a movie on Blu ray. The surround sound was great from gun shots to the people in the Background inside there apartments. But it doesn't mean they should slack on the Picture. Nor give us a reason to Purchase Blu rays simply for the Audio.
Overall I will recommend renting this film. Although it might have a predictable twist but it has some nice surprising elements. This film has plenty of reply value. I'd watch it more then once. it's a good film. But I can't classify it as a classic that being said save your money and stick to the rental. |

A little dragged out
The movie was well-made and with great acting by Norton and good acting by Farrell, and if it weren't so sadly realistic, the acting wouldn't save the film from being a below-average flick about cops. In my opinion, the movie would benefit from being some 15-20 minutes shorter. I found myself comparing "Pride and Glory" to "Street Kings" while watching the former, and to me the latter was more dynamic and entertaining. Still, P&G is a decent movie, and I'd recommend it to those who like this genre. Rental would be a better choice, since Warner Bros. didn't care much about mastering the picture, and probably decided that DVD-like look would be enough. I am sure that, have New Line Cinema remained an independent studio, the quality of this film on blu-ray would be significantly higher. Well, it's still better than nothing, AQ is okay.
I didn't give much attention to the single bonus that is present on this disc - a production documentary, I found it boring after several minutes of watching it. |

Crime movie with dirty cops that is still descent
A plot that has been done many times, NY or Chicago cops that have gone bad and now the honest cop has to come save everyone and the department. Its been done before but this movie was still well made and very well acted. It keeps you entertained and good amount a story line to keep us interested.
PQ was kind of disapointing quite a bit of grain in more then a view scenes and flesh tones were inconsistent. Then in some scenes colors were vibrate and flesh tones would get back to normal.
Not demo quality but prolly better then DVD. |

Very Authentic
Really enjoyed this movie. Great performances by all. Often times I have problems with thin blue line films as I end up pointing out technical errors in procedure. This is the best I have seen in that regard. Yes the Departed was great but not technically realistic. This movie sets a new standard for cop films. No cocking of the Glock hammer in this film ha ha.
PQ - was the weakest point which is very unfortunate considering how good it is.
AQ - no review here as I had to watch it with headphones on due to the late hour.
Extras - There is only one but it is as good as the film. Very engaging and interesting as it is a full documentary of the making of the film. |

A gritty cop drama that deserves a watch
Pride and Glory is a tough movie to watch. Its not because its bad, but because of the way the story is set up at times, and that the movie is nearly three hours long. However, this movie is definetly a good cop drama with a few twists and turns and just enough action to keep you interested.
Story wise, It is about how a family of cops have their lives twisted around after a event goes horribly wrong, leaving four officers down, and two dead. Its then up to Edward Norton and his brother, played by Noah Emmerich, and Father Jon Voight, to get down to why. What is uncoverd could then bring down the whole NYPD. It does tend to drag on, but stick with it, because the ending is very nicely done, with one of the best fights ever filmed.
PQ- decent to say the least. I have seen blu offer so much better, but this is far from the worst transfer I have seen. The whole movie has a grain effect to it, but I think it helps with the grittiness of the movie. The daylight scenes have a tinted and faded look to it that tends to make the picture look a bit washed out. However, the night shots really took good. The grain effect is mostly non-existant, and the colors tend to stand out. Take the opening football scene, or the shots where Edward Norton is on is boat, and you can easily make out objects.
AQ- as always, I am not disappointed. The TrueHD track was superb, and kept all noices at a great level. There were only a couple of instances where I had to turn up the volume to hear the dialogue between characters. The gunshots, are loud and clear, but its unfortunate because guns are rarely used in the movie. Overall, for what is presented, the audio is solid and holds its own, but like the video, its needs improvement before it becomes reference grade.
The only extra feature on the disk is a feature-length making of feature that details the production history as well as provinding the challenges and obsticles, and observations the team had to go through to get the green light for the movie. It is interesting to see, but is something you will only want to watch once, if you watch it through the whole way then.
Overall, this is a decent crime/cop drama that fans of the genre will easily enjoy. I loved the story and I liked that the movie was nearly three hours. I rather see a three hour movie, than a movie that is only the bear minimum of 1hr 30min, any day of the week. This movie might not be to everyones liking, but you need to at least rent this movie and see it once. |

Canadian Blu ray has cropped aspect ratio
the Canadian blu ray version has 1:78 aspect ratio instead of the original 1:85 aspect ratio. Alliance Films in Canada I heard has a very bad record when releasing films on blu ray as they tend to be sloppy and tend to crop he aspect ratios plus they do not include the bonus content.
The film itself and the picture are said to be okay, but Alliance' release ruined it. |

Good Movie
I wasn't sure what to expect when first watching this movie. I knew I was in for a good ride with Edward Norton and Colin Farrell. In the end, it was very good but the ending was pretty bad. Rent before buy |
