A Direct-to-Video Gem!

You never have high hopes for a movie that skips the theater. Well this was no different, but the lack of high hopes may have made me enjoy it even more! The acting is by no means stellar, but the cast for this B-movie is as good as you can expect. The story line was a little stupid, but hey, this movie is called "Return to house on haunted hill"....I really only picked this up for the seamless branching thing but was pleasantly surprised with the movie itself. I definitely reccomend for any horror fan.
Now for the goodies. The PQ was okay overall, some scenes were nice and sharp revealing every thread of every cobweb but others were not much better than an upconverted DVD. Some of the extras are in 1080p as well. I was originally disappointed when I saw that the only audio track was Dolby Digital, but after hearing it, it did the job. Directionality and presence was excellent for all 5 speakers. Dialogue was a little unnatural sounding and the whole thing could have been more crisp, but it was an excellent track for being DD. The seamless branching was great as well. At one point I chose the "wrong" path and things got ugly. Without revealing too much, you have the option to go back and choose the right path. I enjoyed it very much. Couple some decent features with an okay horror story line riddled with lots of gratuitous nudity and violence and you will get "Return to House on Haunted Hill". Easily worth the few dollars for a rent.

Back with a vengeance!

Really liked this one! For a direct to Video movie, this is quite impressive. Return to House on Haunted Hill adds some depth and back-ground as to what was really going on at the old art deco insane asylum. No spoilers in this review, but will relay a few things as you probably realized you would see anyway. The Spirit of the Evil Doctor (Jeffrey Combs, love this dude!) is back with a vengeance, but so are the maimed and innocent spirits of his victims. Both are to be feared and for good reason as becomes apparent very quickly once back in the House. The acting is quite good, natural, realistic and all of the characters, both good and bad are engaging and very entertaining. Back into the haunted asylum we go with all of the thrills and chills to experience as one would guess. This movie does not disappoint with excellent creepy make-up and special effects. PQ is about average of any BD. Not exceptional and not poor. No disappointments at all. SQ is 5.1 only but still delivers a strong sound stage with clear ADR and good sound effects from all channels. Return to House on Haunted Hill is not quite as good as House on Haunted Hill, but this movie has it's own merits as well. Worth every BD penny spent on it! Great one to pick up for the Halloween Season as well. Recommended!

Don't Return To "Return To House On Haunted Hill"

The 1999 version was pretty good, but this one was not nearly as good. The movie was pretty stupid and made almost no sense. I wish that they would of kept more to the original instead of trying to branch into new territory. The video quality was decent for this type of movie, but would of loved some better quality. The audio was clear and loud, just like everyone likes it. The extras were great, a pick your own adventure was very interesting. Overall, I would say stay away from this. The only thing is I would rent it just to see the pick your own story. I wish I saw this before buying it.

"The people that died here apparently still haunt the house."

The first "House on Haunted Hill" movie (the one from 1999 that is) is a favorite of mine; when I first saw it, it really freaked me out. Naturally, as with any horror franchise, the sequel kind of stinks. I think it still has a fair amount of horrific freakiness to it, a lot of gnarly blood and guts violence, some nudity and sex, but the story and characters are much more dull. One other good thing about this film is that they manage to explore the history of some of the ghosts in greater detail. But other than that, the movie as a whole feels rather cheap and weak. Photography is pretty good. Production design (sets, props, costumes, ghosts) is decent. Music is not bad.

The disc has decent video/sound quality for the most part. The video has some grain and softness in some parts. But it is also sharp enough to reveal how fake some of the CGI effects are. Color and contrast are pretty good. Sound quality is not bad. Includes some extras. More importantly, this disc includes an option that lets you choose the fate of the characters as the movie plays. It's an interesting gimmick.
