A vey fine performance
It is hard to fault this disc other than in the extras area where none are offered. An interview with the excellent dancers would have been nice. The dancing is always very good and in most cases quite outstanding. Carlos Acosta is almost too powerful for what is essentially a young role but his dancing is superb and for those that had reservations over the strong sexual nature of Nureyev's choreography the MacMillan view is straight down the middle and a delight to the eye. The orchestral playing is excellent and the picture quality one of the best to come out of Decca. There are a lot of dark scenes but the cameras handle them as well as one could reasonably expect. The costunes are wonderful and traditional. No mobile phones or MacDonalds invasions yet! Ballet seems better able to withstand the production fiascos that so often ruin opera.
I was delighted with this disc. Tamara Rojo is just perfect as Juliet and the ungrateful part of Paris is very well done. The lesser parts are generally well cast and danced, I particularly liked Benvolio and Tybalt is wonderfully evil. No need to hesitate. I have compared this with a Bolshoi SD DVD and the Nureyev version from Paris and they are no competition at all. I only got my copy today and the price has already gone down. |

If you enjoy dance this is a must have blu ray
This classic production has been a regular part of the Royal Ballets offerings for a long time now and its easy to see why ie its a brilliant production. Thats not to say that its not now looking a bit tired and faded - it is - but the choreography of Kenneth MacMillan remains flawless especially when performed by Covent Gardens top dancers of today. The quality of the picture and sound on this blu ray I cannot imagine being bettered. Stunning. |
