"Wake up, start over."
There never were any indicators that this would be a good film by any measures. As far as direct-to-video releases go, this is quite average at best. I believe that the film's photography is as good as (if not better than) the first film "Donnie Darko." There are a lot of slick special effects, which may actually be frivilous, but are cool to look at. There is some interesting dialogue. Production design seems good, with some interesting props, costumes, and settings. And there is some good music throughout.
Aside from all that, however, the movie's plot is weak, hard to follow, and seems to really rip-off the first film (especially since elements from the first film keep re-appearing without any substantial context). The characters are also rather uninteresting, and at times, it's hard to figure out who's who and what their roles are. In the end, the story comes off as uninteresting and dull, despite the visual flair. The whole thing is especially weak when compared to "Donnie Darko."
The disc has excellent video quality; I could not see any problems with it, and it seems very sharp. The sound quality is good, but some parts seem overbearingly louder than the rest of the movie (poor balance). There are a few extras included. |

S. Darko
S. Darko
Being a very big fan of Richard Kelly I had to see what became of "S. Darko", A straight to DVD/BD sequel to one of (in my opinion) the greatest films ever made. After watching S. Darko I feel I have wasted 103 minutes of my life that I, unlike Samantha(The protagonist), will never get back. I am unsure how Richard Kelly could let this happen to some of the most complex and troubled characters he created in cinematic history!
We are stuck in the middle of nowhere with Donnie's little sister in small town USA. Who gives a shit. Seriously, what kinda trouble could two horny 18 year olds possibly get into involving quantum physics and time travel? Luckily for us a poorly written script in combination with a predictable outcome (haven't I seen this before?) lead to hilarity as well as disappointment. It feels like it was thrown together to mimic it's predecessor but with no point, acting, or emotion. Even the tagline "It's time to travel forward" seems to make no sense considering the whole film [SPOILER] has to do with trying to change the past (haven't I seen this before in a better movie?).
I understand that this is a straight to DVD/BD movie but trying to follow up something as great as Donnie Darko should never be done.
I'm not all negative however. I can say that there was a couple neat and eye pleasing camera work in a few scenes if you MUST see this film.
Thank you for allowing me to waste YOUR time with my opinion.

Great Movie!
Despite what a vast majority of others say, I really enjoyed this movie! I enjoyed just as much as Donnie Darko. As soon as I watched it, I went out and actually bought the Blu-Ray, I was so impressed. I hadn't expected much,
Video quality is EXCELLENT. I found no flaws.
Give this movie a chance. |
