Top Notch Transfer, Despite 1080i
This film is one of my favorites, from the first time I watched it. Fantastic Actors, Great Plot and Shocking Ending. So I was very excited for the blu-ray release. Then I started hearing all this speculation about 1080i video transfer and how it would ruin the film, some people say its great and some terrible, but I had to judge for myself. Popped it in and the verdict.... does not disappoint at all!
The video quality transfer on this release is top notch. The video benefits from a MPG4AVC Encode and is displayed in a beautiful 1:78 aspect ratio in 1080i resolution. I was skeptical of how good this release could look in 1080i, but not anymore. From the opening scene with Morgan Freeman getting ready for work till the end of the film the video is solid. Colors are vibrant and picture very clear. I myself noticed very little to virtually no grain throughout the film and admired many of the scenes in the film where I thought I was actually there I could see so much detail in the picture. One scene in particular that comes to mind is the one after the detectives discover the 'Lust' murder and are questioning the hotel manager... I could actually see the sweat on his forehead and the grease in his hair, it was amazing!!
I'm sick of people bitching and complaining about the 1080i print on the back and saying it's a shit transfer without even giving this release a chance. Well I myself (being a stickler for video quality) having watched the film and closely examined the details of the video, I have to say, this is definitely an impressive transfer to Alliance Atlantis and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. This is defiantly a huge upgrade over the dvd version of the film I own. In fact, if I didn't see the 1080i print on the back of the cover, I doubt I'd be able to tell the difference between this and some of the other blu's I've watched in the last year. This is definitely a top notch transfer and the video quality is well up to par with other solid blu-ray releases to date.
As for the audio, I'm not too picky about it and would be lying if I claimed to know too much, so I'll leave that for others to rant on, but for my own input, I did take notice of the DTS-HD rating on my system and have no complaints about the audio being sub-par in any way here.
As for the Extras; I own the collectors ed dvd and have all the extras I need in there so dont care bout there being no special features in this release. Most Alliance blu's dont have them, which is fine by me, never watch them more than once or twice anyways.
Final Verdict: despite the 1080i video transfer, the video/ picture quality does not suffer one bit and is fantastic and well worth the upgrade from your reg dvd version of the film. I was hesitant to make the purchase (having paid through the nose for my collectors edition set of the film) only to be stuck with a sub-par blu-ray release, but I assure you this is not case. Although a bare-bones release, the video and audio transfer quality of the film did not disappoint for me at all and delivered exactly what I expect when buying any blu-ray title, and thats solid quality. I'm very happy with my purchase and would recommend this release to anyone else. |

Review of Dutch version
Have just received and looked at the dutch version of this movie, and first impression is good.First the aspect:I measured it at 2.3:1.If it differs from original aspect,I believe my measurement is to blame. Not going into movie review, but it is one of my favourites.Go to IMDB to check out reviews of the movie:)
Video:Fair amount of grain, but not exessive.Sharpness is much better than the DVD version (no digital noise that I could detect).Hard for me to say something about quality vs filmprint since it's 13 years since I've seen it at cinema, but looks about as close as it's possible to get.Only thing I'm uncertain about is the blacklevel.Doesn't look off,but like it abit more contrasty myself.Film looks gritty as it has done on disc, but maybe the film doesn't have the contrastlevel of some other films. But it might be that it should look like this.
Sound:It's got DTS track english only, not DTS-HD but sounds very good.Only thing:Don't know if it sounds that much better than the 2-disc DVD.
There's no extra on disc that I have found apart from trailers in SD quality at start, but fans of this movie probably have the 2-disc version of DVD release.
Highly recommended disc.Maybe wait for the release in your country rather than buying from a firm based in netherland.Found it troubling translating the site myself, but doable. |

Seven on blu-ray with a different aspect ratio.
This release of seven is a bit of a stop gap until new line get arround to updating their special two disc dvd,but as seven is one off my favorite movies i could not resist a high def version.
I as "The cardman23" had a few reservations when the spec listed a 185.1 ratio and a 1080 i transfer and also a normal compressed dts audio track, but thought what the heck at this pricepoint
On popping the disc into my player my first plesent surprise was the fact the audio spec on the box was wrong the disc had a 5.1 dts master audio track which is pretty good to my ears, the dts es track on the special edition dvd was set up for home cinema use this seems a simple uncompressed version of that audio track.
My biggest surprise however came with the picture quality it captures the look and feel of the movie perfectly and while some grain is evident its just part of the film and in no way spoils it, in my opinion its a nice high def upgrade.A lot of people seem to have a downer on 1080 i releases some people even thinking they are no better than dvd quality this is of course rubbish as dvd is 480p and 1080i is over double the resolution.Ok a 1080 p would have been nicer but their is not all that much difference a 1080 p delivers the picture all in one hit where a 1080 i picture delivers half the lines then a split second later the other half it all happens so fast the difference will allways be slight at best, also with many blu-ray players, amps and recievers upscaling these days its not a huge hassle to convert the 1080 i to 1080 p,as most people do not have a problem converting a regular 480 p dvd to 1080 p which is a far worse than this slight conversion.
Their are no extras on this disc ,but as i never look at them anyway its not a deal breaker for me so this will be a good disc until as i said before new line release a blu-ray upgrade of their special edition dvd. |

THE MOST disappointing blu I have bought....BIG TIME!
So why did they not make a 1080p version of this film? I mean it does look better than the regular dvd, but still...a proper 2:40-1 transfer would be nice...why the heck would they crop more than half the frame??? I don't get it at all...so......if you own the Platinum DVD, don't waste your $20 |

Very Disapointed
I bought this movie with high hopes, then they were crushed... the video is grainy and the
audio isn't that great, there are no subtitles to use and no pop up menu except for an audio
selector, they REALLLLLY dropped the ball on this release, i want my $ back |

Absolute Disappoinment , Hopefully a Proper Re-release is planned!!!!
This should be for all movie fans be an absolute no-buy situation. Note the aspect ratio. Someone.. certainly not David Fincher, decided to crop about 1/3 of the original movie frame which was 2.35:1. In this day and age of large lcd/plasma screens and HD tv easily available, why do minor letterbox bars on only about 25-30% of all releases, have anyone mumbling about those " damned letterbox bars " . Shouldn't we all demand that the original movie, aspect ratio intact, sountrack unalterred, as the director wanted us to see it?? Just my humble opinion. |
