Great entertainment!

I haven't seen Firefly and I missed Serenity in theaters. So I read a lot of reviews and made a blind buy on this one. Couldn't be more satisfied. Good acting, cool characters, fine script, just all-around fun movie. Video looks incredible. Great detail and colors. Special effects and CGI are done well, not always perfect, but above average. Now the Audio, on the other hand: Rocks hard! It doesn't get much better than this. Great surround and LFE usage. This movie really demonstrates how top-notch sound can improve the whole viewing experience. That being said, having the captions turned on seemed to help make the dialog much easier to understand and helped to completely follow the storyline. Has great replayability too. One of the better Sci-Fi movies I've seen in a great while. Would love to see a sequel made.

A Must-Own For Sci-Fi Lovers/Devoted Fans

"Serenity" is an unusual Cinderella story in recent Hollywood memory. The only noteworthy sci-fi motion picture based off of a cancelled television show. For those unfamiliar with the cult-hit, many of its nuances and characters will seem unfamiliar and perhaps even slightly derivative. However, Serenity is a hugely entertaining space extravaganza that should appeal to contemporary film lovers as well as casual sci-fi fans. As a sci-fi action film with character development, Serenity is nearly unrivaled; sporting an array of colorful characters, witty dialogue and great human drama. While not as technically polished as say, Star Wars or even the Aliens saga, the movie has a unique universe all its own. A terrific cast of characters as well as some fine acting. Joss Wheaton and his crew should be very proud about bringing their underground hit's climatic showdown to the big screen; with all barrels blazing. Rarely has an ending to a movie felt so poignant and cerebral, causing us to want more. Serenity is a real winner.

MY BLU-RAY REVIEW OF SERENITY:

MOVIE (4.5): A must see for sci-fi fans, or anyone who calls themselves a fan of the series. It’s long enough to leave a lasting impression but not so long that we feel mentally fatigued. Serenity is a fast-moving, funny, dramatic and an all-around visceral movie experience. The sort of thing that classic Saturday matinees are made of. It's not quite flawless, but it more than quenches our thirst for a great adventure yarn.

VIDEO (5.0): The Blu-Ray release of Serenity is a vast improvement over the previous DVD releases, and is ideal for watching the film's intense special effects. However, what I found to shine even more this time around was the wonderful acting from the cast. HD ensures that each human expression and emotion is observed with the finest quality possible; one simply cannot appreciate the acting in the same way on standard def. Environments and settings are equally impressive. Though the film sports a slightly high-contrast and rather dark-look, I have no complaints. Blu-Ray is the ideal format for watching this movie.

AUDIO (5.0): The audio mix of Serenity is a thing of beauty. It has been revamped and restored to near-perfection. A perfect balance of both dialogue and sound F/X. The music swells and leaves an emotional undercurrent in the entire room, and in this unique restored HD Dolby format, it has never sounded better. Equally impressive are the abundant and varied sound effects, which sound completely authentic and considerably louder and more dynamic than any other DVD release. The movie contains several language and commentary tracks, which are highly impressive and superior to most releases.

EXTRAS (5.0): The extras on this disc really blew my socks off. They are a must have for fans of the series. While the documentaries are rather short in length, they are informative and very entertaining (not to mention there's quite a few of them). If that wasn't enough, there's a unique new feature which contains a picture-in-picture commentary track with the director and cast. This is fantastic, and the future of where newer Blu-Ray releases are headed. There are some featured notes of the production aspects, which can be found in the interactive menu on the live commentary tracks. A rather nice touch. We also have deleted scenes, outtakes, interviews, fav scene access menu and more. This one has it all. As a fan of the show myself, I'll be revisiting these features very soon. Highly Recommended!

OVERALL (5.0): Serenity is a hugely entertaining movie that is highly original and doesn't take itself too seriously. Though dark in places, it’s not quite so scary that you have to shun your kids from watching it. I recommend watching Firefly first before seeing it; this will greatly improve your viewing experience; since the movie has some major plot developments which might be distracting if you haven't seen the show. A must own for sci-fi action fans. Again, highly recommended.

Very good

I never had any porblems playing this on my PS3 40gig .. I think maybe only USA releases have issues not in Canada.
I never watched Firefly and this was the first time i viewed Serenity. It felt like a Star Wars type of movie that deserves a sequel or maybe a trilogy.. it was that entertaining. Characters were good, acting great and story very well done. all in all a good film

PQ/AQ as expected was good, AQ was actually supureb... gave my 5.1 surround a workout

For an older movie, unbelievable PQ/AQ

As the title says....this movie isn't a brand new release by any means, is a number of years old now but oh my god does it ever look good on blu-ray. There is really no discernible fault in the PQ or AQ on this one. it's just beautiful!!

The movie itself is "very good" but not excellent. I liked it quite a bit but I can see how it would be a bit offside for many. I had seen the movie before so it was no surprise but the main overall plot is the best part of the movie, as well as the environments rather than the details of dialogue and how they chose to progress the story from scene to scene. There are a few things here and there that keep me from giving it a higher movie score but don't let that keep you from this, it's very good and most certainly worth a watch/buy....even if it's just for the PQ.

Pretty Nice

Serenity was a good movie but i wasnt great, the ideal was nice but not enough to blow my mind. This disc does offer alot a technical features, the PQ is border line Star Trek which was PERFECT in my opinion. The AQ (5.1 DTS-MA) was stunning and offers alot of LFE during space travel. Overall the movie has a good story and action so i give it a 4.0. Recommended to all you Sci Fi lovers.

A Must Own for any SciFi Fan

Having enjoyed the series after Fox television (these morons showed the episodes out of order on the original run) I snatched up the DVD boxed set. The movie... I now have three versions (releases) of the film. The Blu is by far the fairest of them all. This ragtag bunch of misfits make a special team on the small or big screen. It's been in the collection since it's release at under $20.

The video, Audio, extras and storyline are most excellent. Josh Whedon offers fans a well detailed script, with almost real characters in a wonderful setting. The main storyline is completed in a action packed tale for any fan. Mixing this with quality performances, special effects and a hefty set of extras this blu-ray disc really drives home what blu-ray can really be for a fan. This is a must have for any collection, scifi fan or not. The characters are enough for anyone to enjoy.

Walshes death near the end was a wasted character and never should havened. He was afterall "A leaf on the wind."

Give the GUY a break!!

For an exceptional writer, Joss Wheedon just doesn't get a break!

He has VERY loyal fans but they don't seem to be able to keep his Firefly and then Serenity kicking!

Very interesting of the Future (used future as George Lucas coined the term), very interesting characters, but NOT production Company friend material??!

GREAT PQ and AQ!

Great story!

Reference material!

Highly recommended.

No problems here

I've played this from my PS3, Panasonic DMP-bd55 without any problems. Great movie and both sound and picture are top notch. I recently watched the HD-DVD version of this movie and the bd release is equally good. Recommended buy!

Finally!

Universal is quickly becoming the 'go to' for Blu-Ray quality. Waited a long time for this Blu-Ray. Could not believe how good this movie looked. Saw details I haven't seen since the theater. Played FLAWLESSLY on my Sony BDP-S300 (4.40). Get it. Blind buy it. Whatever. But enjoy it.

A reference Blu Ray

Usually, sci fi movies are not my forte, but Serenity had me glued to the Plasma for the entire movie. Good plot from beginning to end. the acting wasn't stellar, but was certainly enough not to detract from the story.
PQ was very good for a dark film like this. AQ was absolutely off-the-hook. Very detailed and full, with very active surrounds. LFE was also very well used and powerful. The audio on this is very reference for me.
All in all a definite buy for this movie.

I am a leaf on the wind...

I hadnt watched the movie since I first saw it on DVD not long after it came out, so I was still kinda surprised through most of it, and even tho I have seen Firefly (and loved it) I was still at the edge of my seat.

I cant believe they canceled Firefly, there I said it, but its Fox so what can I expect right? BUT the show was So good that it did something not many (if any..) canceled shows have even done, spawned a great, money making motion picture movie. The cast is all back and they are superb, exactly how they should be, Nathan Fillion is perfect as "Mal" and Summer Glau is incredible as River, those two performances kinda outshined everyone else but it was all still very solid and a few beloved characters dotn make it through to the end. I am egerly awaiting another installment but I dont think it will ever happen.

The movie is flawless on BD, the PQ is really really good, Im sure someone will find something to gripe about but in the space scenes and battle scenes its picture clarity. The sound is also very strong and I was really impressed. You like sci-fi right? Worth a rentat the very least.. you like Firefly? Then you already have this movie!

Great Sci-Fi movie for fans of Firefly

I first saw this in 2006 late at night when my mom was out of town. My dad and I were overwhelmed by the visual effects and the ground shaking sound. The plot actually focuses on a central meaning, which many science fiction movies do not. This is a great popcorn flick that should be in the collection of every science fiction fan.

"Don't worry, I'm a leaf on the wind!" "What does that mean?!"

Even though “Firefly” was a great show, I was never sure what to expect out of “Serenity,” the show’s successor. I was really surprised as to how exciting it turned out to be; much of the film is loaded with awesome fighting/action/special effects scenes. And it still managed to be faithful to the unique formula of the show (which blended sci-fi and westerns together, with possibly other influences), the stories the show had, and the characters. The story/characters in “Serenity” are equally strong; writing and acting are still really decent. The story in particular covers events that were supposed to happen in later seasons of the “Firefly” show, and manages to solve some mysteries that were left unsolved. It even manages to keep an open ending for potential sequels. Yet, if you've never seen "Firefly" before, the movie may still make good sense; the story can stand well on its own. Photography is excellent (practically better than “Firefly,” which has so many scenes where the camera shook around violently). Production design (sets, props, costumes, ships, etc) is just as good as “Firefly” if not better. Music is good.

The disc’s image quality is a bit grainy, but still really sharp and clean, with good color/contrast. Sound quality is better than I remember. Includes a bunch of extras (more than the previous DVDs, I believe).

No problems on my PS3 either. Picture quality is awesome and is a massive improvement over standard DVD. Audio quality is demo worthy for sure. This is a must have in any Blu library.

Amazing addition to the Bluray collection

The movie is great, especially if you have seen the series and already understand who the characters are and why they are there.

The thing that really caught me off guard was the audio for this movie. Yes, the video is beautiful, the characters are great and the story line is pretty good but the audio, good lord. When a ship was taking off in the movie it felt like a ship was taking off in my front room. This movie has the best quality audio I have heard in any bluray I have watch so far.

Bottomline: Decent story, good picture quality, entertaining characters, AMAZING audio quality.

Absolutely worth to upgrade!

It's the 3rd copy when I bought this BD, but I need to say, it's 100% worth to upgrade it! the story is very interesting for a Si-fi movie, the picvture of this BD copy is almost better and more delicate than HD DVD, and DTS-HD MA is much much better than HD DVD, it's amaing!

Love it

As the title said, I just love this movie. Picture quality could do a bit better, but for all Sci-Fi fans out there... I will not tell anything more than that's already been said by others. Buy it! And also have a crack at the TV series on Blu-Ray.

surprised

when my wife picked this sc-fi movie i thought this was my chance to get in a nanna nap lol . dts hd master insured this did not happen . dts really knows how to pack a punch and is often a knockout . the movie itself was good but the audio made up for the poor acting and weak storyline . if you're a sc-fi fan or just want to rattle everything loose its wourth the purchase .
