A New Old Generation

Star Trek revitalizes a franchise to heights it rarely reached previously. This reincarnation re-introduces us to Kirk and his crew as they once again boldy go on their journey to save the universe. Kirk and company are set against Captain Nero, a Romulan from the future who seeks revenge from a federation who has yet to wrong him(yes, you read that right). An enjoyable ride with unmatched special effects.

The video and audio presentation on this disc are pristine. Fine grain is evident throughout with consistent black levels and terrific shadow detail. The only negatives are the excessive use of lens flare and the decision to use shaky cam in space. Since these are inherent to the film, I did not degrade the transfer score.

JJ Abrams Star Trek brings new life to the federation and plenty of action to a blu-ray player near you.

Best Blu-ray this year

As much as I love "The Spirit", I have to admit that this is the best Blu-ray release this year. The sonic aspect on a high end sound system, well it's like a sonic bullet. Just not to be missed. Rarely has a big budget sci-fi film made the tranlastion to a home theater system as this one has. Would have been just perfect if Paramount had also put in DTS-MA track as well. Either way, this a reference Blu-ray to own just as "Dark Knight" was last year. Superb collection of extras in HD. Looks like Blu-ray has finally arrived !!!

Pleasantly Suprised!!

Having been born in the 60's and as a matter of fact on 9/8/60 and it just so happens that the original Star Trek series launched on 9/8/66. So, when this hit the airwaves it was an huge success in it's time...So, being a hard core sceptic and a firm believer that recreating greatness is artistically impossible, well, in nearly all cases, this one comes pretty darn close! I can speak to my past experiences with watching this show for many years. I don't claim to be a Trek afficianado, dress up as a Trekkie or quote from the movies, but I've seen all the episodes numerous times and have them engrained in my soul. So, with that said, I can tell you that I was more than suprised at how much I enjoyed this movie! It was well done, well thought out, and very entertaining! In my opinion, it remains as true to the original series on it's content and delivery and in my opinion is consistent with Gene's visions in mind. It offered great character references as well as establishing their new identity, roles and Idiosyncrasies...to date. It's the best attempt at a seemless transition from the original of yesteryear and I believe that anyone who's experienced the Star Trek series from the beginning would agree with that statement. Of course, there's alway room for improvement and I'm not a huge fan of some of the scenes that displayed the moving camera or flaring affects, but this one is very much on Trek (track). If you're looking for a good all around Sci-fi movie with lots of action and great fight scenes (as good as Star Wars) that most of your friends will enjoy, old or young with plenty of popcorn, this is definately the one! I very much recommended this as an addition to your Blu-ray collection!!

Great reboot.

I cant believe JJ and co succeeded with this movie, but they did in everyway. great movie and great storytelling.

PQ: Looks great, the only thing stopping this from being reference is way too many lens flares, my gosh, i think they want to give us a headache, and too many shaky cam shots.

SQ: Not as robust as one would think, but mixed very well and this track has a little of everything.

One of THE best Blu's this year!

I won't write a huge review like anyone else, but easily..this film...this blu ray...is probably THE best Blu on the market for entertainment value, PQ and AQ...I was blown away so much, I had to watch it twice...in 1 freakin' day! I did not go to the show for this one. I bet it looked great on the big screen...but it worked just fine at home too!!! JJ you've made YOUR best piece of work! Enjoy! This Blu IS reference material....all I have to say is WOW!

Reference DEMO!

Movie wise it’s very good, plenty of action scenes and some comedy in it. But the reason I right this review is not because of the movie itself but the Picture and Audio Quality.

PICTURE-Jaw dropping 1080p picture. The blacks are extremely detailed, and the color tone is perfect. The special effects make this movie look so real. I would defiantly consider this to be Reference quality.

AUDIO- I have a 7.1 (two subs) set up, with the latest decoding audio processors. I saw this fill in its TruHD format and my gosh!! Honestly I don’t understand why people here complain about the audio I was just speechless. The surround sound is active almost all the time, the subwoofers are just at its best when needed. The sound stage is immense. Now it is TRUE that the volume on this is slightly quieter, but loud doesn’t mean better. This movie is well balanced in which you can actually here EVERY speaker work and do what it does best. Reference Quality Sound!!

THE PERFECT BLU-RAY DISC ON THE MARKET

This disc is so good because
a) You've got a great movie in the best picture and sound quality possible
b) Shit-ton of extras
c) IT'S CHEAPER THAN MOST BLU-RAYS WITH MORE THAN 2 DISCS

So, whether is you're a long-time owner or a newcomer, I highly recommend STAR TREK to be on your Blu-ray shelf.

Star Trek

First off, I am not a fan of Star Trek and I never thought in a million years I'd say this but J.J Abrams & crew have created one of the best sci-fi movies in a long time and have made Star Trek dare I say, AWESOME!!! It all starts with the fantastic cast; Zachary Quinto was made to played Spock as was Simon Pegg for Scotty but the big surprise for me was that Chris Pine was outstanding as Kirk being that he really has done too much yet. He brought a great charm to the role and was had a fantastic sense of humour. While those were my favourite characters, the rest of the cast is very good as well. J.J Abrams' direction was excellent; he made the action sequences both very exciting and highly thrilling. The Space Jump scene was simply wicked and the space battles were remarkable. The script manages to introduced us to all these memorable characters but making them in their own way but they do pay homage with plenty of classic lines popping up. I have to applaud everyone involved with this movie especially both Abrams and the entire cast because Star Trek was one of most exhilarating experiences I have had watching a movie in while. Overall, Star Trek is top-notch sci-fi feature with amazing action sequences and a wicked ensemble cast. Even if you're not a fan of Star Trek, this truly is a must see movie; it is pure, good old fashion entertainment at its' finest.
Wow is a word that came out as I watch this movie in HD.

The PQ is gorgeous; colors are vibrant (look at all the uniforms), detail & depth are outstanding in every scene and the image is very sharp with rarely a hint of softness or grain popping up. Definitely will be a great demo title! The audio is excellent too. The track isn’t as aggressive as I expected it to be but the clarity of it is fantastic, you hear little details everywhere. Dialogue is always clear and the wonderful score is used to great effects on all speakers. Two discs worth of extras and they are all really good. The commentary track is informative and interesting and there are a lot of featurettes on the making of the movie.

In the end, Star Trek was a huge surprise for me. I never expected much from it but loved every minute of the movie. It is a thrilling sci-fi film with an incredible cast and amazing action & CG. Paramount does justice by bringing it to Blu-ray providing a dazzling visual transfer, a fantastic audio track and huge assortment of excellent extras. Overall, I would highly recommend adding Star Trek to your collection.

Not a Trek fan but.....

I will be short here. I am a huge Star Wars fan and Trek has always been kinda cheesy to me. This movie however, has changed it all. Star trek stepped up to the plate and delivered a movie that is easily one of my favorites among all movies. I found it hard to find a flaw....it's a real good time for sure!

Had to watch it twice

This is the BD i've been waiting for ever since I stepped out the theater from seeing STAR TREK. After a foregone conclusion that I wasn't interested in seeing this film, when the talk started about how good it was, my curiousness got the best of me. I went to see it and trust me, the hype is merited.

What's key about this film is the integration of the actors with their roles. The producers/director/writer were smart enough to know that if you take the essence of the characters and give them to the right actors, each actor will make their own mark but the character will be in tact.

Chris Pine is a coup. He embodied all the smug arrogance, yet intelligence and recklessness of the character of James T. Kirk, without mimicry of William Shatner. If he had mimiced Shatner, the film would have been an utter failure. I do like that Uhura was given an expanded role in this film and the specifics of her job. I love the fact that this film dared to explore Spock's duality, displaying some of his human characteristics.

I knew this would make a great looking blu-ray when I saw the film in a digital theater. Picture quality is sharp and stable, no color shifting or anomalies, low light detail. A very faithful transfer to what I saw theatrically.

As for the audio, this is what I was looking forward to. I was extremely impressed with the audio I heard in the digital theater. How did it relate to the home experience? Nearly the same though not on the same level. Don't get me wrong, this is a reference track. Not only are the sounds very powerful (and the bass extremely prominent) but there is a lot of inner detail. So many audio tracks today are overcooked to make inpact, but not so much to reveal detail. STAR TREK is both. It displays an amazing amount of detail, yet it has so much power to the mix. I read previously where it was mentioned the track was balanced. That it is. Is it the best lossless track i've heard? CLOVERFIELD is still the TRUEHD king for me, however this is an extremely well produced track.

Without a doubt, one of the best BD Films this Year!!!

One of the few movies where I can re-watch it the next day. The story is simple yet, unpredictable. As a new viewer to the Star Trek saga, I can't wait to see what Abrams and the writers put on for the sequel.

The PQ is flawless. Enough said.

I absolutely love the audio. Besides the actual quality, the soundtrack is worth a purchase itself. Top notch orchestras and choirs do this movie justice.

The extras are really good, but lack a straight featurette on the VFX (which I am addicted to). They cover everything you imagine; from day to day productions, costumes, sound and music design, props, sets, filming techniques (really quite interesting since J. J. captures shots that you would expect to be manipulated with the computer), and much more.

This film was awesome. Go GET IT RIGHT NOW.

Enough said.

A successful "re-boot".

Nero, the captain of a Romulan mining vessel, blames the Federation and its envoy, Spock, for failing to save his home world from destruction by its exploding sun. Pulled back in time by the "red matter"-generated black hole that was to have contained the supernova, Nero threatens to destroy Vulcan, Earth and the rest of the Federation planets in revenge for his loss.

When, in the present-day alternate reality created by the paradox of time travel, he captures Spock's equally temporally-displaced and "red matter"-laden vessel, Nero begins to make good on his threat by destroying Vulcan and most of the Federation ships sent to protect it. The young crew of the lone surviving ship, the USS Enterprise, must use all their cunning and courage to prevent Nero from carrying out the rest of his mad plan. With a bit of good, old-fashioned gumption and some wise words from a deus ex machina Vulcan, they just might be able to stop him!

-----
This "re-boot" of the Star Trek franchise was actually a lot of fun. The "new" Kirk, Spock(lar), McCoy, et al. clicked (with me and with each other) pretty well, there was good dialogue and pacing, and a lot of action and adventure with - for a Star Trek movie - relatively little cheese. In fact, the movie's only weak points, in my opinion, were "future" Spock (with Nimoy looking particularly decrepit), a lame villain and a ridiculous "chase" scene on Delta Vega with some obvious CGI critters.

When I originally saw this movie at the cinema, I found the PQ of the IMAX presentation to be very crisp and impressive but, because I was sitting too close to the screen, it was just too big to enjoy properly. The AQ was generally pretty good; however, during numerous action/shooting/destruction sequences, it was uncomfortably loud. Watching it last night on my HT last night was a much more enjoyable experience. The PQ was excellent and the AQ was very well-balanced, with good use of surrounds and modest but effective LFE.

Live Blu & Prosper

First off this has to be one of the best releases in 2009 so its a must buy for anyone. I never really watched much of star trek growing up but that didnt matter. You dont have to be a fan to love this movie. The acting, audio, special effects, everything is on point and looks excellent. If you like Sci-Fi or Action or your just looking for something different that has a great story and looks good (demo material) on blu-ray i would say without a doubt this is the title your looking for. The 3 disc special edition of Star Trek i would recommend to anyone and can be a great family movie also. The extras are great, after the movie i was so impressed i decided to dive in and wasnt let down by any means, you also get a digital copy with is always a plus.

SSDD --- Same Stuff Different Starship

Having worked in Home Theater Retail for 6 years now, and being a HUGE SCI-FI fan, I have been waiting for a Sci Fi movie to really show my fellow co workers that Star Trek can kick ass! Being that I am OCD when it comes to looking at and picking apart movie details and audio this film should be fun.

-Picture-

Having seen this film 3 times in theaters...on the third I really paid attntion to detail...I know what it should look like if you will. The film is simply brilliant when it comes to all aspect of what one would look for in a Bluray HD 1080P warp speed release. Facial Tones, Black Levels, and Greyscale all look amazing. I in all my bluray watching experience have never seen a more realistic looking Bluray Disk. I have no issues with grane what so ever...period. It just doesnt exist. Detail on everything is amazing...I mean seriously...look at Kirks uniform at the end of the film...I diddnt know that the features were little Starfleet logos...and I am a Sci Fi nerd!! The good ship Enterprise could not have looked better....with her reflective paint, and her ample nacelles...all looked amazing and detailed. The ship really looks like it was made by hand! I could go on forever but this is a simple review.

-Audio-

With the fantastic picture seemingly unable to be triumphed...the audio does it easy as pie. With a Dolby True HD track that is subtle at times and full of oomph at others, youll be in for a treat. Charge Phasers and arm Photon Torpedos because the action scenes on this disk will be a true test of anyones HT system. While not as loud and boom as some might have wanted from this new star trek film it will still be enough to put you in the numerous battles and romps in this film.

-Final Words-

While not a perfect film in my eyes...it is a masterpiece on its own. The film does what it sent out to do and introduce a new generation of people to what is easaly the greatest Science Fiction series of all time. This Bluray release is almost perfect. The supliments are abound, the picture and sound show off what we all need a bluray player for, and the film itself is awesome. My limited vocabulary cant explain what I truly feel about this film so just watch it and enjoy

Star Trek Review

Reboot! What a reboot of a fallen franchise. This is Star Trek like I have never seen it and it delivers on all fronts. A new generation of Star Trek with everything that I loved about the old Trek and some new twists that make me enjoy it even more now. The special effects in this movie were great as well as the picture and sound quality on the Blu-ray. If you have not seen this movie, you are missing out. Pick this up, if you have not already.

STAR TREK IMPRESSIVE

I've never seen this movie before, I thought it was going to be wack, but it was impressive, it was an amazing film, funny a bit, but amazing, you don't have to be a trek fan, because I'm mostly a STAR WARS fan, so star trek will be in my second best sci-fi, it's worth it.

Superb

My first review here.

Movie: Great Story with exceelent character intro and development for prior non-trek folks. The movie plot flows fantastically without dull moments or overdone character focus.

PQ: So good that I think this is reference quality.

SQ: Really good, but wish it was more enveloping at times

Extras: have not checked these out, thus the n/a rating

Overall: A must have for any Blu-Ray owner who might even think of enjoying Sci-fi.

Star Wars fan who never gave Star Trek a chance until now

Star Trek always seemed lame to me and the 60's series seems weak especially the monster fights, I tried to watch the movies in the 80's and the Professor X era later on TV but it never appealed. I saw the trailer for this movie and thought WOW a great science fiction movie, then to my surprise i waited for the title to appear and was shocked to see "STAR TREK" I loved how they reimaged everything for people like me who never seen star trek before with a new Kirk and Spock two classic characters instead of continuing with the last few movies they did. Great story and plot has me very interested in Star Trek now and hope they make sequel soon or at least plan to. The sound, picture are awesome, so many special features i didnt know where to begin. I watched this movie twice already and plan to watch more. Highly Recommended by this lifetime Star Wars fan and Star Trek hater.
