Unfairly treated.
I will admit, the transfers post Khan could've been better. However, to call them garbage is...well, garbage. I thought the video looked pretty good, especially considering the age and relatively low budgets. 3 and 4 were the films were the first films I noticed DNR, but it wasn't life-ending. I enjoyed watching the films and I think they're great. Worth it if you're a fan/geek, like yours truly. If a future set has better transfers, I'll go for it, but the transfers here are pretty darn good.
This set is worth it if you like at least 3 of the films (I enjoy all 6, but I enjoy the 2-3-4 trilogy and 6) and for the Captains' Summit. Absolutely hilarious, informative, and worth the price of the set. The funniest (or saddest) part is some info a fan knows better than the stars (funniest for me). An example (spoiler) would be Patrick Stewart under the impression that Uhura guest-starred on TNG...untrue. Very fun summit and absolutely worth getting the set for.
I recommend this set. The transfers are not that bad. Could be better, yes, but most fans shouldn't hold off waiting for them. At least rent them. |

Paramount could have done much better with this set
I am not a naysayer, but I honestly think Paramount could have spent more money and effort on really restoring these films. Restoring the second movie out of six titles is half-hearted. The first film has not a bad premise, but the picture quality is in a sad state. With today's technology, Paramount could have fixed or corrected at least those dirt and scratches, not just brightening the colors (for the other titles too). I think the normal consumers are becoming jaded as to what is all the fuss about blu ray's superiority, when studios keep releasing half hearted cleaned-up restored films. Blu ray was supposed to show another level of clarity and beauty for older films, but all we see are enhanced specks, dirt, smudges, bad opticals, which could have been corrected. The Jack Ryan films from Paramount had the same problem. A review site said it is very ironic the Original TV series look much cleaner (?) and better than this motion picture set. It really befuddles my head as to why Paramount did not clean up many of the shots in the first film and some in the others. As for the Captains' summit, what's the point of bringing them all together only for 70 minutes? Such a major get-together, the first ever, should be longer and supported with more supplementary material.
Ultimately, I cannot say I am not disappointed, but I hope Paramount learns from this. The other studios too. What if the ALIEN series will have such a half-hearted quality release this December? The thought already scares me.. |

Improvement
I am pleased with this set. However, there is nothing more annying that misinformation being spread. The Wrath of Khan is the only one that was restored because the source print was damaged and it needed to be. All of the films (while varying in their presentation) are in native 1080p and look much better than the previous DVD's. Honestly, if you don't see a difference between these Blu-rays and your DVD's, you need to get a better television.
As for the films, this would hve gotten a higher rating, but Star Trek 5 is so awful, it dragged down my ratings. The sound is also pretty solid on all of the films, and, as I said earlier, the transfers are a big improvement. I do agree with the criticism of Paramount's continuous exploitation of Star Trek fans with their pricing, though I got this on a ridiculous sale so I wasn't affected. |

Very Pleased Trek Fan!
Ok, I've been getting a litte irked by all the slam-fest politics happening on this release that's about as ill conceived as those plaguing the impending market hit of Lord of the Rings on Blu-Ray. To all you ninnies out there moaning and complaining to the tune of one-star ratings that they didn't do this or that or include the extended director's cut and blah blah blah...please check your bitching at the door.
First off, the reason only Kahn (Star Trek II) had a full restoration was because it was only one that NEEDED it!! The master was in such poor condition that it demanded nothing less. These films were shot between 20-30 years ago, so get over yourselves. You're not going to find the modern plastic-looking films in this set. What you will find is a transfer nothing short of stunning and eye-pleasing. Does it reach the heights of more modern CGI releases from Pixar? No, of course not. So I won't hit it with a 5 star. But, for what it is, it is wonderful. I'm watching Voyage Home as I write this. I've watched Kahn and about half of Undiscovered Country. All magnificent. Search for Spock was wonderful (particularly the bright daylight scenes of Planet Genesis.
Overall, these films retain the original theatrical appeal in pristine 1080p. This transfer has been waiting to happen for almost 3 decades. Naysayers, be damned.
This is a proud and will be an oft watched edition of my BD collection. I'm not an "extras guy" so I felt bad in ranking them. I rated the collection a "4" only because of my disdain for Final Frontier and my lack of enthusiasm for the first film.
Buy this!! |

pq ugh
I only rented st 2 blu-ray out of this set since ive heard mixed reviews. The actual picture quality on the live actions scenes was definitely improvement but the fx effects were really really bad. I would wait until they remaster these before i would buy these. I guess if your a complete die hard that wants a copy of all the movies it wouldnt be a bad buy but since im not happy with the fx and i dont like all 6 of the movies i will pass |

Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan (wrong aspect ratio)!
Apparently there is about 5% missing from the top portion of the frame 2.35:1 on DVD/Bluray. The laserdisc shows far or 5% that is rough guess. I am just stunned at how lazy the engineers at Paramount are? It looks like it was put together by someone who is blind.
So go and pull out Star Trek II laserdisc NTSC widescreen and A&B the two. I have the laserdisc running at present. I just get fanged to the teeth when (I or us) as consumers get taken for fools. |

Boldly Blu.............................................
From 1979 - 1991 The original crew of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Chekov, Urhura and Sulu boldly went where no show had gone before and produced six successful motion pictures and created a long lasting franchise. Paramount has graced blu ray viewers with these six classic adventures and the results are very good. We all know how good each movie is and the old saying that the odd numbered Trek's are worse then the even numbered ones, that said lets take a look.
The Motion Picture: PQ - 4/5 - AQ - 4/5 - The movie itself is very long winded and slow. But it was also attempting at that time to reflect the mood of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Wars. It was met with a mixed reaction but as it was initially ment to be 'One' movie, hence The Motion Picture, it's success warrented a sequel....
The Wrath of Kahn - PQ - 3/5 - AQ - 3/5 - Revered as the best of all the Trek movies, Kahn is a sequel within a sequel. The original series episode 'Space Seed' first introduces us to Kahn and his band of supermen. Trek II also takes a bold step to incorperate the aging characters and in real life actors to help enhance the story and what a classic this film has become.
The Search for Spock - PQ - 4/5 - AQ - 4/5 - Trek III picks up where Trek II left off as the crew of the enterprise says goodbye to one of there own, but the Genesis planet has evolved and Spock is reborn, Kirk and crew set out on the need of the one parting the needs of the many.
Trek III holds a special place in my heart because it was the first Trek I would see on the big screen.
The Voyage Home - PQ 3/5 - AQ - 3/5 - Trek IV picks up where Trek III left off and concludes the unoffcial trilogy of the Genesis arc and the crew find themselves having to go back in time to save earth from a probe looking to get guidence from some humpbacked whales. Trek IV become the biggest hit of the six films and also the one filled with the most humor.
The Final Frontier - PQ 3/5 - AQ - 4/5 - Known as the bastered child of the original six, Trek V does have some good qualities, but with a cheesy script and low budget FX, this one is a let down after the successful run from II - IV. Perhaps the fact that is was lost in the box office race of the summer of '89 going up against Indiana Jones 3 and Batman.
The Undiscovered Country - PQ 4/5 - AQ - 4/5 - After a bummer Trek V, Trek VI wraps up 30 years of the original series crew and some plot points from movies past as The Undiscovered Country sends our famed crew off into the sunset on a very classy note.
All in all this is a must have for Trek fans. Paramount did a good job on the over-all presentation of this set and with all the extra's. The only thing missing is the Director's Cuts of I & II. But I'm sure those will see the light of blu some day soon. |

A Great set
I agree with 'monkeyjb1988' about the picture quality. It wasn't perfect but I haven't seen these movies look better. I think that the movies quality gets better and better with each disc. A pretty good box set and I got a pretty sweet deal on them so i'm pretty happy.
I was never a fan of the Star Trek tv show but I saw all the movies in the theater and thought they were ok then.. but revisiting them years later on Blu-ray was a pretty damn enjoyable experience but the funny thing is that I can't pick out a favorite, each of the movies have good things and bad things about them but they are all entertaining and that's all that matters |

What a stinker! Almost.
ST:TMP is not that great. Still has the black spots on one of the Enterprise fly byes. Some
backgrounds on the bridge are nothing but smears. My DVD looks OK for now. The Wrath of Kahn
does look a little better then the DVD. Did not watch the others. My daughter bought the set. For
me, the best thing of this set is The Captains Summit. Too bad it is not available by its self. I will not
be spending money on this set. My old DVD's are OK for now. Sorry Paramount.
Edit: After watching ST:TMP on DVD, I found the same background smear behind Kirk. It's more
noticeable on the Blu-Ray disc. For those who want to check it out, it's in the scene where Spock
enters the Bridge for the first time. You will notice that the right side background not behind Kirk is
more defined. Almost like a halo around Kirk's head. It would be interesting to see what the original
film looks like. Changing my view to a little better, but will still stick with my DVD's for now. |

Franchise Decommissioned?... GO TO HELL!
Along with their stellar brand spanking new release of the original series, Paramount has thankfully saw fit to grace Trek fans and movie lovers with this exciting new Blu-Ray set of all six classic Star Trek films to feature the original T.V. series cast. The original films evoke many pleasant and unpleasant memories (although those are mostly derived from Shatner's directorial stint called "The Final Frontier"). The films have been rather generous to fans over the years, aging rather well and making a recognizable impression on the film world. Although the series may not be the end-all pinnacle of science fiction or drama they are above all charming, adventurous and inspired.
Fans may recall the slow-crawl, "2001-A Space Odyssey"-style of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" which tried to translate the genius of the series to the big screen. This film introduced us to Jerry Goldsmith's haunting score which would become the main theme for "Star Trek: The Next Generation". A perhaps more regarded and famous film, "Wrath of Kahn" features Ricardo Montalbán's charismatic and hugely memorable performance as Kirk's most sinister adversary. "The Search for Spock" saw the big screen return of Leonard Nimoy, as well as his first directorial effort in the series which would culminate with the critical smash hit "The Voyage Home". This film featured our gallant crew hunting the likes of humpback whales in 20th Century; a visually appealing and funny Trek which managed to unite our familiar crew with nostalgic wit. "The Final Frontier" was William Shatner's first directorial effort and featured the growing threat of the Klingons which would carry well onto our sixth outing "The Undiscovered Country" and beyond. These early films helped establish what the Trek movies are today and are a humble reminder of the lasting appeal of the series.
Blu-Ray Review(s):
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
MOVIE: 3.5 / VIDEO: 5.0 / AUDIO: 5.0 / EXTRAS: 3.5 / OVERALL: 4.0
There's of course that old joke which states that odd numbered Trek films stink. I find that to be both accurate and misleading. While never regarded as the best in the series, part one is hardly the worst film. It manages to expertly transition the crew from small screen to big screen and does so with heavy visual style and a moody sci-fi story. Not nearly as action packed as the other films, Motion Picture is, for lack of a better term: fascinating. I am however disappointed that Paramount failed to include the Director's Edition in this release. This is both unexpected and surprising, since that version seemed like the definitive treatment for HD. Nevertheless, I don't really miss that version for this particular release. The original film has been restored beautifully and has never looked better. It has been brightened up considerably and the sound is perfect. This will give fans of the recent DVD a run for their money.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn
MOVIE: 5.0 / VIDEO: 5.0 / AUDIO 5.0 / EXTRAS: 4.0 / OVERALL: 5.0
Wrath of Kahn is probably the best film of the bunch. Great acting, writing and action. It reinvigorated the series as a blockbuster property and also managed to give fans a much needed connection to Trek canon. It features Kahn, a villain explored in the original series and manages to turn his fated meeting with Shatner into a flat-out classic revenge saga. Of course, the film is rather dated to some degree but it more than gets our attention. Picture and audio is similarly excellent when compared to Motion Picture. It has been restored to its full visual glory. Looking back at the film now it’s amazing how well it's been brightened and sharpened up. The model effects are both stunning and gorgeous to look at. Trek fans will rejoice!
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
MOVIE: 4.0 / VIDEO: 4.5 / AUDIO: 5.0 / EXTRAS: 4.0 / OVERALL: 4.0
Star Trek III seems to be the middle of the road film in the bunch. Not quite as terrible as The Final Frontier yet it may even be better than The Motion Picture. It follows the death of Kirk's son as well as the rebirth and re-growth of Spock as he emerges out of the ashes of genesis into the full-fledged Vulcan we know him to be. His apparent memory loss manages to cleverly set up the subsequent films, in which the crew will get to know him all over again; though there is something intuitively familiar and even more poignant about their friendship up to this point. The film has some moments of the crew at their best. Sizing up the picture and audio, part III doesn't look quite as good as I and II. Colors do not jump off the screen like in the first two and the detail seems quite lacking in certain areas. Even still, the model work of the FX shines like never before and the release is light years ahead of its DVD counterpart. Fans will not be disappointed.
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
MOVIE: 4.5 / VIDEO: 4.0 / AUDIO: 4.5 / EXTRAS: 4.0 / OVERALL: 4.0
Star Trek IV is probably one of my favorites in the entire series. A charming, adventurous romp with ample humor and a great science fiction storyline. Voyage Home represents the original crew at the pinnacle of their charm, acting ability and chemistry on screen. It also marked an impressive directorial effort from Nimoy (who also directed Part III). Star Trek IV also has a humanity and dramatic heart that the other films simply lack. It is a gorgeous looking movie, nominated for a best cinematography Oscar® and winning for Best Visual Effects. Unfortunately the picture isn't quite as good here. Certain scenes lack detail throughout and are rather fuzzy and appear out of focus. The film has always looked a bit grungy and cloudy, probably because of all the water in the movie. Even so, despite its slight flaws it's a worthy transfer not quite representing the best of HD. This one was not re-mastered like the others and was simply re-done using the DVDs original source I believe. Still I'm not complaining too much.
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
MOVIE: 1.5 / VIDEO: 4.5 / AUDIO: 4.5 / EXTRAS: 5.0 / OVERALL: 4.0
It's amazing that one of the worst movies ever made gets one of the best Blu-Ray treatments available for an older release. O.k., so maybe The Final Frontier isn't the worst movie ever but it's far from the best. The concept and inspiration seems to be there, it’s just the execution that seems lacking. Everything about the film reeks of mediocrity, from the clunky pacing to the self-aware acting, writing and uninspired editing and special effects. In fact, one of the biggest problems about this Trek was that fans had to suspend their disbelief far more than normal; since the effects were not up to par with the rest of the films. All due largely in part to the mediocre direction from Shatner, the extremely low budget and misguided decisions. It’s no surprise that the film underperformed at the box-office (though I believe its made back all its money from DVD sales no less). On the plus, audio and video are excellent with some abundant extras on the making of and production aspects. Trailers and T.V. clips as well as commentary from William Shatner which is probably more interesting than the film itself.
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
MOVIE: 4.5 / VIDEO: 5.0 / AUDIO 4.5 / EXTRAS: 2.5 / OVERALL: 4.0
I have fond memories of this film, watching it over and over again on VHS. It seemed the most accessible Trek while at the time the most dramatically credible and action-packed. This was to be expected since this was probably the final outing of our now world famous Trek cast. Their chemistry and camaraderie was off the scale this time around and you could tell they were having fun despite their worn age. Star Trek VI also introduced some fine actors playing the antagonists like Christopher Plummer as the Shakespeare-quoting Klingon General Chang. It featured a fine performance from "Sex and the City's" Kim Cattral as the smart and sexy Vulcan Lieutenant Valeris. Undiscovered Country is probably the best of the HD transfers; image is clear and detailed with fine definition throughout. The sound is also excellent. The film has been converted to a gorgeous 2:40 aspect ratio and finally does away with that annoying ratio that was filmed for its theatrical release. This is the original version rather than the director's cut, which only featured a few annoying, inserted scenes when Spock tries to cross-examine Valeris.
Extras Review: 5.0
The set also features a new disc entitled "Star Trek Summit", which features famous cast members like Shatner, Jonathan Frakes, Leonard Nimoy and Patrick Stewart (all being interviewed by Star Trek cast member Whoopi Goldberg). This is a rather nice addition, but its likely fans have seen things like it in the past. Still, the segments are nice for fans who want to feel like they're sharing an evening with their favorite cast members. Nimoy in particular comes across as being very engaged and insightful about the experience. The entire boxed set of the films features familiar extras from the DVDs. Audio commentary, production documentaries, and featurettes. Some nice additions like cast reunion segments featuring extras from the first Motion Picture and main crew interviews recalling their experiences. Also, needless to say, having to watch the new trailer for J.J. Abrams' Trek every time I pop in a disc is annoying to say the least. O.k. Paramount, we get it! You want to plug the new film. Don't worry, I don't think casual fans or Trekkers will have a problem with seeing it on the big screen.
All in all, this is a must own for fans and highly recommended for its terrific features and brilliant restorations. Star Trek fans will be in heaven. Highly Recommended! |

A decent set, but mostly a tease...
As a star trek fan, I am happy with the set. As a Blu-Ray customer... I am dissapointed that they did not restore all the films, just WoK. I had not seen the theatrical cuts for most of them in many years so it was fun watching them again. I'll keep my extended cut DVDs until Paramount releases them on Blu-Ray too. |

Yes I just watched #6, I noticed a scene and line that was not in this set, the last part of the movie where Admiral Cartwright falls on the ground and Worf says "This is not Klingon Blood", then they take the mask off and see that it is Admiral Cartwright....I wonder what the others will not have in them that I will miss. |

Very Sad day indeed
Outside of Wrath of Khan these disc are pretty dismal in terms of PQ. So much more could have been done but the studio decided to rush these out to take advantage of that crap they have in the theater. Hopefully they will revist these films in the future. |

I like the "Scooby Doo" ending to # 6. Especially the part where, after pulling off the mask of the would be assassin, Everyone says "Old man Parker, The Caretaker?!"
PS: has anyone seen the outake where ensigns Shaggy and Scooby are seen leaving a smoke filled shuttlecraft laughing and headed for the Galley because they have the munchies? OK so I'm bored and there's nothing good on TV, Shutup! |

Don't listenn to the naysayers
There have been a lot of naysayers regarding this set in general and a lot of people blaming Paramount for it. Even professional reviewers have stated clearly that no corners were cut with it. The bigges "problem" with the set is the use (or overuse) of digital noise reduction in removing film grain and some fine detail. The fact is that while this is an issue, I find it a very minor one in the grand scheme of things.
Some have complained that it damages the viewing experience. Maybe it does, but I think for the most part this set gains the viewer far more than is lost. These films ALL look better than they have ever looked on DVD. 3-5 in particular have looked to me muted and washed out. Not here. Indeed, TMP has been a great new experience. I never knew there was THAT much color on the ship. The colors pop and the contrast is quite good. The result on all the movies is a very solid HD experience.
Trek II looks the best for obvious reasons, but the appearance of all the rest is nothing to be discounted. I don't think II is TRULY head and shoulders above the others and I question how much better 3-5 can look since, like II, they were shot on more budget-minded stock films and the films themselves were managed and shot by Paramount's television division.
The sound simply will get no better. True HD 7.1 really puts you in the film.
Some have also lamented the loss of the Director's cuts of the films in this set. I, for one, like having the originals. Further, ultimately the only film that really benefits from a DE is The Motion Picture. The other tidbits in the other films range from quaint additions to utterly pointless. (i.e. Trek VI's "Scooby Doo" ending to the assassination plots. )
The fact is that the films, including the Captain's Summit bonus disc are MORE than enough of an upgrade visually and aurally to justify the roughly $12 per disc cost. Don't deprive yourself of a pretty darn good Trek HD experience because you're waiting for a 2011 release of the Director's Editions.
I highly recommend this set. |

Awsome movies
I think these movies are a definite improvement over the DVD releases the picture is a little grainy but the color is vibrent. The extras are not good not many new ones case design is nice. I think ppl should definitely add this to their collection, the only thing I am disappointed with is they should has brought the director cuts instead of the theatrical versions. |

ST VI: Undiscovered Scenes...
so, when i read that these blu ray releases would be the theatrical releases instead of the (at least for me) less captivating director's cuts (i really cannot watch my ST:WOK on dvd, it is not at all what i watched a million times with my grandmother, and feels like it taints the memory of times spent with her), I was ecstatic!
but i was almost positive that the two parts that i found missing in these versions were in the original theatrical release of ST VI: Undiscovered Country.
the part when Scotty accuses Chancellor Gorkon's daughter, Azetbur, as a part of the conspiracy, stating that she didn't cry after her father's death. to which Spock responds that Klingons have no tear ducts.
also, the part near the end where the assassin, whose attempt to kill the federation president is foiled by Scotty, is revealed to be human rather than a Klingon as he is made-up to be. (though, I've just this moment read on wikipedia that it was not in the theatrical release, and only put back in for the video release. i swear i thought it was theatrical, though)
that really sucked, i really liked those two parts in ST:UC.
and i have to agree that there are some visual imperfections in the films i've watched in the collection. unfortunately, as it is likely to be the case with several effects movies that we've all come to love, the effects really are what show through more than anything else in the transfers. during most of the space scenes of Wrath of Khan, you can see an opaque outline around all the space ships moving. it's an artifact that i noticed many years ago when i was young boy watching Star Wars on video; not surprising, as ILM did the effects and used the same type of work for both sets of films. (maybe this is why Lucas doesn't want to release Star Wars on blu ray...) by the time Undiscovered Country came along, the artifacts are taken care of; to be honest, i think that film was the best as far as being technically perfect.
but the audio... oh, how i love the audio in this release!!! i suppose it should be obvious that i'm an audiophile, and maybe it's just because a really well tuned audio track just does it for me... but i cried just listening to the audio design and voluptuousness of the music in these films.
the extra footage is amazing, too, though. there is a great amount of it to explore.
and i guess for the last thing i'll say on my soapbox, is that Nicholas Meyer is a freakin' genius!!! absolutely brilliant. looking forward to Don Quixote, Sir! |

Mr. Paramount Technician.... Set noise reduction to full!
Great movies, substantial extras, immersive 7.1 soundtracks and awful picture quality. Ever single film except for Wrath of Kahn has had ridiculous amounts of noise reduction applied to the images. The Voyage Home being the worst, at times it looked as though Kirk and his crew were water paintings. It's a shame that the transfer technicians felt it necessary to make these appeal to the video game generation and remove all the grain along with the fine detail. Such a shame that this was done to this otherwise perfect blu-ray collection |
