The force is strong with this one...
first i'd like to state that i'm 47 years old and i feel like a little boy when watching this show, i love it! let's get something out of the way right now, the audio. lots of folks are complaining about the lack of lossless audio and how they are not going to buy it and all of that. i have watched 3 episodes and the first thing i can tell you is it sounds better than it ever did on the CNHD. I'm sure it's not as powerfull of a mix as we would get with lossless but, DD is getting the job done for this series.
PQ - having watched this series on the CNHD, i was blown away with it, now i have it on blu, full 1080p in it's OAR and let me tell you, the folks at lucasarts have taken out the big bottle of shine on this one! it is crystal clear, better than i remember watching the show all those friday nights! the OAR adds a new dimension to the show, well done.
AQ - for me, the DD mix is perfect for what it is. look, it's not lossless so get over it and enjoy it for what it is. yes, i wish it was lossless but it's not. i will tell you that so far the mix i'm hearing on my system is great, good clear dialouge, nice LFE too, though, like i said before they need to improve the amount of surround that goes on; i think there could/should have been more. still, it's sounds really, really good.
i'm very happy overall with this despite the fact that the forum main body said that availability was very low in many states & cities to try to find this on it's release date. i just got mine today and if i didn't have a meeting to be at tomorrow i'd stay home and watch the entire season! guess i know what i'm gonna be doing this weekend!
Get over the lossless issue and get on with enjoying what this series does offer and may the force be with you! |

Clone Wars in 1080p and in 2.39:1 OAR!!!
Just adding to Genome's reviews, the reasaon the sound is not as good as it could have been is because it's only a DD 5.1 track, rather than a Dolby True HD track which was on the theatrical film BD. And for that it lacks a little punch on the low bass end and maybe a bit on the emmersive surround field, I'd say. But other than that, it's clear, you can hear small little sounds that weren't (or barely) audible during CN broadcasts.
As for the director's cuts versions of the episodes, it looks like to me that most are mostly character dialogue moments inbetween action scenes that just slightly flesh out character actions or emotions a bit better. I've only watched through the Malevolence Trilogy, so take that for what its worth.
Now as for PQ...stunning. I'd say, maybe even slightly better than the movie disc. One thing i have noticed is that the light sabers seem a bit more tight than the zoomed 16:9 1080i versions as seen on CN broadcasts. By that I mean, the white core is more vidid, and the colored glow is sharper as well as not bleeding to other pixels. They're not as hazy as they were during broadcasts.
But where this BD's PQ really shines is the texture detail in all of the models. For the most part, this is movie reference stuff. The detail on the ships is amazing. How they were able to texture map this stuff so well on a TV budget really shows how well CG animation as come in the last few years. I can see the proposed live-action series using a lot of greenscreen and CG backgrounds and effects.
And as for seeing this series finally in its 2.39:1 OAR is awesome. It was clear from the start that this series was framed at this ratio, but cropped for broadcast purposes. What this means is that finally, you get to see how each shot is meticuousaly framed. For instance, when the Malevolence's ion cannons explode, in OAR you can clearly see that the frame-left cannon explodes and shoots out a decent sized flame shockwave. In the broadcast version, this is cut out of frame.
The packaging is cool too. Hardback book style with glossy foil like feel that has a nice montage of still shots on the back. The 68-page book inside is basically your general hard copy version of a photo gallery extra which includes many sketches and artists preliminary renderings of series characters, ships, and locations. Kind of think of Ralph McQuarry-type stuff.
The extras are nice too. Each episode has a short 5-10 minute featurette including the producers talking about the designs for the episode and story developments, etc. Pretty cool stuff. Viewing this stuff through the Special Features menu rather than through the Episode menu allows you to watch it in enhanced mode which will, from time to time, pop up a Jedi Holocron that you can hit "Enter" which then take you to more stuff.
All in all, a great set, just wish there was a Dolby TrueHD track. But I think I may know why there isn't one. Maybe because this is indeed a TV show and the sound wasn't initially mastered in HD as was the theatrical release in Aug. '08. I don't know for sure, but it's just a guess. |

One of the best Blu's I own!
I must admit, I haven't been a Star Wars fan since I was a little kid. The first thing that caught my interest was Genndy Tartakovsky's animated Clone Wars series. It was pure genius an easily the best Star Wars of my adulthood. When I saw that Genndy was not involved in the new series I really REALLY wanted to hate it. However, I am in love. The visuals are incredible, especially for a weekly series. Every frame looks like a beautiful digital painting. The stories are mature and immersive. The sound, while not in HD, is booming and impressive. The packaging is the best in my 200+ collection. With a little digging you can get it at a great price ($33 on amazon today). I honestly think it is the best Blu-ray purchase I have made. I can't wait to watch another episode and I am very anxious for the second series. Simply put - A MUST OWN!!!! |

Great for what it is.
This is a television show. One with very high production values but it is just a television show.
Movie: I love season 1 but I've watched each episode so many times on my dvr that they have lost something. However more than half of the 22 episodes I could watch over and over and over again! The extended cut of Malevolence feels much more cinematic to me and I wish that had been what was released in theaters before the show started I think it would have gotten much better reviews that way. A few others that make this set a must own for Star Wars fans are 'Rookies,' 'Cloak of Darkness'(written by Paul Dini), 'Trespass,' and the Ryloth 3-part story arc.
Video: I'm giving this a 10/10 not because it's the best looking BluRay you can buy, but because Season 1 will never look any better than this. I love the new aspect ratio compared to the broadcast version and seeing this show in 1080p is breathtaking to me (a die hard Star Wars fan). The opening battle of 'Jedi Crash' is an orbital battle with beautiful blue skies, flaming star destroyers, and dogfights. 'Trespass' takes place on a snow planet and you can see every snow flake in perfect detail. I love it and it gives me a new respect for what the creators of this show have accomplished here. With such LIMITED resources that they had in season one.
Audio: The audio is great compared to the broadcast version. But I feel like I need to crank the volume on my tv a lot higher than my other Blu-rays. I really haven't figured out why... like I can't put my finger on what is missing. But that being said there's nothing wrong with the audio using just my TV speakers. Like the sites review said the voice is never drowned out by anything and there's a ton of tiny sounds and effects i never heard on the broadcast version of the show.
Extras: Again like the site review said. I would have loved a full commentary track or a long behind the scenes feature of the making. But the featurette's that accompany each episode of this show pack a lot of information in. And a 7 minute featurette about a 22 minute episode seems like a good deal. And I've watched a couple of them multiple times actually because they are short and i've noticed more each time. I also LOVE how the shows Director talks about the things like Jar Jar and lame jokes that he is NOT a fan of; like George Lucas suggested to put in Jar Jar so he had no choice and he jokes about how hated Jar Jar is.
Overall: I LOVE the packaging it's durable and fantastic looking! and it doesn't look out of place amidst the SW DVDs or other Blu-Rays. And the book inside is a nice bonus. ALSO something I hate about sets like this is when there is one of those magnetic security strips in the box. This came with one but it was on a piece of paper that comes off when you take it out of the packaging. So I gotta give it points for that heh.
I love this show and I can't wait for Season 2!! |

you people are blind!
This is a terrible transfer. The bitrate on the video is in the 8-9 range to jam too many episodes on a disk. Totally ruins the sharpness. How did that get past the reviewer and all the reader reviews? Wake up! |

I’ve got a good feeling about this.
The Clone Wars must have inspired some kind of wonder ever since Mark Hamill mentioned it in a brief line in the first original movie. Even though it’s briefly shown in the prequel films and a cool little cartoon made in 2003, there is still a lot to explore.
Following the 2008 CGI Clone Wars movie, this show features the same funky blocky characters and semi-artistic rendering, but it seems to be of higher quality. Lighting effects, animation movements, lip movements, and action scenes overall seem much improved from the pilot film. More importantly, with multiple story lines to follow, the series offers better stories with deeper issues and stronger characters (characters ranging from the main heroes Anakin, Yoda, Obi-Wan, etc to the lesser known characters like Aayla Secura, Plo Koon, Kit Fisto, etc). The show has loads of great action scenes and high-quality effects. There are adventures on many different worlds (once again, some well-known like Naboo, Coruscant, etc to lesser-known ones like Iego), each offering imaginative design and impressive imagery. Production design (sets, props, costumes, vehicles, weapons, etc) matches the Star Wars universe and fits in perfectly; fans should be able to recognize a huge number of familiar elements, mixed in with cool new stuff. Music is not bad. All together, it’s an awesome show that fits nicely in the franchise.
This disc set features perfect PQ; I could not find any faults with it whatsoever. It’s very sharp and clean, with excellent color and contrast. Sound quality is acceptable, but as a lossy soundtrack, it’s not as clean as it could have been, and lacks impact (despite the show’s cool sound design). This set includes some cool extras (featurettes, a database feature, trailers, etc). It comes in a large, thick, rather nice digibook-type package with some cool production art inside. |

Whoa I didn't think it would be this good!
Man I love this series, it's pleasantly great for adults as well! Brought back good memories of watching Star Wars again. I love the fact that George Lucas is producing FIVE seasons regardless what the ratings are. FYI when TV series came out, it attracted 4 millions veiwers!! LOL no problem with the ratings anyways but I'm glad George is his old self. Keep bringing the Star Wars univese on Blu-ray, I'm loving it!!! PQ and AQ are outstanding!!
Oh by the way, they brought back Jar Jar Binks! I'm probably the few that likes him and I'm glad he's back in the movie... he's clumsy and idiotic as usual but funny as hell in this series! |

Meh
Im a big star wars fan and I really enjoyed the clone wars mini series that had the samurai jack animation but after the new CG movie which was terrible fyi, they decided to continue it with this show.....well I'd say its the same style of humor and blandness that the movie had, but this is really meant for kids, not us older star wars fans, just not my cup of tea, I suggest watching an episode or two on TV or another way ahem and decide for yourself |

Great everything, cept the box.. YUCK
This set is amazing looking. The video really does jump out and grab you have stunning it is. My major complaint with this set is the box. Some one decided to come up with this HORRIBLE idea of how to stack 3 discs in a box. Disc 2 and 3 are on the back cover of the case and some how or another some idiot thought it would be funny to make a new box. The 2nd disc sits on top of the 3rd disc, but the holder for Disc 2 is a fully incased peice of plastic sitting above disc 3. I have no idea how these were put in by machine in the factory but there is a really good chance you are going to scratch your disc trying to get disc 3 out. You have to wedge the label against the top of the box and pray you dont drop or scratch the disc when getting it out. Fire whoever came up with this design NOW.
Otherwise best blu-ray around for animation. |
