Highly Recommended for Sci-Fi Fans

Must be completely honest, I am a sucker for sci-fi's, even ones that are medieocre. That being said, this one takes the cake thus far on blu-ray. A great script, backed by well placed casting.

The video is some of the best to date on blu-ray. Black tones have been my biggest complaint in the genre since I've started watching them. The black levels in this movie are spot on black, which in turn makes the even darkest scenes very detailes. Even with minimal light, you can make out every detail. This was a huge bonus for me. After watching great sci-fi films on dvd with less than par black levels (i.e. alien), it was nice to finally be able to tell what was going on during the darker scenes.

The plot in this movie is awesome. Half way through the movie there is much to be desired, and by the end, those desires are more than fullfilled by the resolution of this movie.

I cannot recommend this movie enough for those who prefer the sci-fi genre. For those who don't enjoy sci-fi films as much, this movie isn't for you, although it still provides great eye candy in the way of the picture quality.

Our sun may be dying, but this movie doesn't even flicker!

Sunshine currently hold the spot as my favorite movie (Only matched by my all-time
favorite, The Great Escape, Please bring it to blu-ray!!!).

I saw a trailer for this back before it's release at the cinemas, and was instantly
interested in seeing it. As a limited release, I only had one chance to see it, and I am
glad I did. it needed to be seen in the theater ... With that being said, it needed to be
seen on blu-ray. I am happy to report that it doesn't dissapoint, it looks amazing for
what should be a low budget film (Maybe the big budget guys should take a look and
see what is possible for less dime). My only home theater loss is a lack of surround,
which doesn't allow for the stellar soundtrack to shine.

I encourage as many people as I can to see this movie. I have never seen anything so
intense, so emotional, so dramatic, and so visually and audibly mind-blowing. This
movie presents itself as a sci-fi flick on rebooting the sun, but ends up being a sci-fi-
drama-thriller that deals with human sacrifice, emotion and the tole of living in
complete isolation.

I was simply amazed at how the entire production team was able to create a film that
not only dealt with all these elements so well, but also delivered a visually stunning
movie (i just love the use of the Observation room, the oranges and reds, the intensity
of the sun, and even the screaming sound used to portray the power of the sun). To
add to the superb effects is a soundtrack that not only delivers the right tone and mood
at the exact right time, but almost seems to suck you into the screen with it's power.

For any blu-ray movie collector, or even for those just starting out, this movie is an
absolute must have. It fires on all cylinders and doesn't stop till the credits roll. This is a
visual masterpiece!

Great sci-fi movie with a great score

Sunshine is currently my favorite movie and my favorite blu-ray. I've watched it many, many times and I'd say I'm borderline obsessed with the movie. A large part of that is because it has a fantastic score that literally gives me chills in 2 or 3 of the scenes...or did, I guess I should say. Now that I've seen the movie close to 20 times, the chill-effect has worn off. Basically, the movie has everything I love in a movie. It's sci-fi, adds a little horror, has a really interesting storyline, great PQ/SQ, an excellent score and the characters are likable and believable. When one of the characters had a meltdown over a mistake, it was an eye-opener. I've pretty much reacted the same way over something I did and it was a little eerie to see someone acting it out in a movie. Anyway, if you're a fan of sci-fi, the movie is highly recommended or if you like a movie with a great score, at least rent it to see if you'd like to own it or not. As far as the extras, they're pretty good. I normally don't spend a lot of time with them but I had a couple of questions the first time or so that I watched it and ended up listening to the commentary. Since I was checking that out, decided to check the rest of the extras out as well.

One of the best movies of 2007

If you want a great movie to add to your blu ray collection, then I highly recommend this movie. It looks great and sounds just as good. The story and the characters are highly believable and the movie is paced very nicely. Pick this one up!!!!!!!!

Sci-fi fans only.

Good movie and surely a hit with sci-fi fans like myself, but I did find the move to be a little lacking. Perhaps I felt the story was there, but the way it was executed left some things to be desired. PQ seemed pretty darn good. No way the PQ is less than a 4/5..I gave it 4.5/5. Nice detail in character faces and medium distance shots still carried plenty of detail. Not as tack sharp facial detail as Shoot em Up, but close. Little bit of noise in some shots, but nothing to fuss about. AQ was nice, but I don't have a full system, so I wont say much.

All in all I recommend this movie to any sci-fi fan.

Not quite hard core sci-fi...too much left out

The PQ was pretty consistently good throughout the movie, and given the overall darkness with periods of high contrast, it is not disappointing. Though there are occasional brief grainy or soft scenes that even the casual viewer will likely notice. It does not detract from the experience, though. The AQ was exceptional, even with only the lossy core of the Master Audio track. The LFE was everpresent but not overpowering (though the fireplace in my house vibrated a few times) or annoying, and surround effects were immersive from beginning to end. The haunting, low frequency effects drew you into the scenes and accentuated the mood on board the Icarus II.

As far as the movie goes, this one is true to the science fiction genre and succeeds wonderfully without, as the reviewer noted, depending on space battles, lasers and explosions to entertain. The story keeps the audience focused, constantly reminding of the mission and the challenges faced by the crew when encountering the unexpected as well as the expected and each other. I have to disagree with the reviewer's opinion about the scientificity of the movie, though. While the story does make you feel that you could easily be reading this in a book, a good sci-fi novel would have explained many of the aspects of this story that were missing. Why was the sun dying? How would the payload fix this? How did the crew create gravity far from the sun, and how did they survive the high gravity near the sun. We can assume in the future such details would have a solution, but these questions kept me too curious. Additionally, the crises that arose during this mission seem to be those types of thing that such a mission would have anticipated and had protocols spelled out for, but then there would not have been a story, would there? Finally, I must agree with the comment above that Captain Pinbacker nearly ruined this movie. This entire episode could have been omitted and left the story well-intact. This part of the story seems to have the single purpose of attacking the religious beliefs of those who believe in God. Boyle does not get away with this, as I find it difficult to believe that individuals without such beliefs would have the altruism within them to be part of such a mission.

On the whole, despites its faults, this is easily the best true science fiction movie I have seen in a long, long time, and the video and audio qualities make this a must see for any fans of the genre.

Great Movie

I didn't expect the movie to sun"shine" the way it did. I recommend this for anyone that appreciates a solid story line with a sci fi twist. I classify this as a must own for any BLU fan.
The movie was excellent, the sound was outstanding, and the visuals were very sharp and detailed. Worth adding to the library.

VERY GOOD BLU-RAY EYE CANDY!!!

this movie had the BEST special effects and graphics I have ever seen! and when u put it on tha
Blu, its a MUST BUY! however, for how great the PQ was i think they cud have done better with
the AQ. the movie has u from the very beggining. the only reason it did not get a full 5 from me
is because the ending was not up to par with the rest of the movie. BUT the road to it is very
much worth it, and like I said, it being eye candy alone for any Blu veiwer is worth the buy!!

I could tear a strip of those who are making comments about how the movie is not believable or how the bad guy was cheesy, however its sci-fi and Sunshine is a damn good example of this.

PQ is stunning. Yes the film is dull and gloomy, but the way bright colors like blue, green, orange, and reds were thrown in was amazingly striking. I gave the PQ a 4.5 only because overall its not eye candy like some other films I have seen. AQ was steller for a sci-fi. LFE was the highlight of the track. I also really liked the opening track on the main menu. Jaw dropping.

I'm one who is still trying to figure out as to why extras are so important to some. I find them to be a nice feature but most of the time they are boring or incorrectly done. I love behind the scenes features and have yet to find a blu-ray with one that I enjoyed. I have not finished all of the extra features to this film, however some of the extras were interesting and therefor a 3.5 was given.

I would recommend this movie to anyone and not just sci-fi junkies. Overall its a fantastic movie and worth the purchase.

Danny Boyle at his Finest!

This is a Sci-Fi movie that should be in everyone’s collection. "Sunshine" was awesome. It had a solid story line and plot twists that you would never expect. The PQ and AQ was absolutly fantastic! Sunshine will have your attention form start to finish and have you wanting even more. Boyle really out did himself with this movie! *** A MUST OWN: NUFF SAID!***

I loved this movie. It's an honest scifi movie. It captures really well the mood of the caracters, especially in the opening scenes.
The PQ is very good. I particularly love the images of the sun, they fill the screen with lovely oranges and yellows. a treat.

Just 10 more minutes, Mom... *little spoilers*

I wish they would have done a little more at the end with the remaining three characters. Why did the one seem to have a superhumanness? How could he have survived given the conditions of the ship? Little points, but other than that - I thought it was really well done. I'd recommend for sci-fi fans.

Also, I would have liked to have spent a little more time with the character trapped on the first ship after the other blast back. To give him a little time to draw upon the emotion of the scarifice he made.

The image is amazing for such a low bitrate

I always loved the first hour of Sunshine. I think it is one of the best sci-fi flicks since the original Alien. The problem with the film is that once some fairly standard events occur the place goes all freaky. It turns into a completely different film. The final scene is completely weird and I really can't understand what Boyle was aiming for. This could have been a true masterpeice but unfortunately it turns into a sci fi flick that must be watched but unfortunately it isn't one you would pick to show all your friends.

The video is what truelly shines(get the pun) in this flick. You are blown away from start to finish with some visuals that can not be challenged in many other live action films(Wall-e is in a league of its own). If you like sci fi and you like to show off your tv. This blu is the way to go.

The audio in this blu is great for most of the film. The concern I had is there is a lot of weird music and off key sounds that play. Sometimes you expect the most amazing boom every when the director decides to be silent. I think the actual quality of the audio is great but how it is used in the film is substandard and really effected how much I enjoyed the experience. 28 Days later for example also has this weird audio but it is done in a much better way. Just a few adjustments would have made this complete reference material.

I haven't watched the extras yet but I will. I need to know what happened in the 2nd half of the film.

I recommend this film for any sci-fi lover and someone who loves space visuals. The story idea is solid but unfortunately the execution of the action plot is what fails this from being a true classic film.

Worth owning but probably would want to rent it first.

Real Sci-fi

As much as I enjoy the cowboy/comic book sci-fi (Star Wars, 5th Element, etc) movies, Sunshine brings us back to the roots of Sci-fi in the tradition of 2001, Silent Running, Blade Runner, AI, etc. The story has a solid foundation, real-life characters, and, IMO, a reasonable ending. Two things bothered me, however, that detracted a bit from the story.
First, the atomic payload seemed too small to me to make a major impact on the sun. I could put that aside. But the really big, nagging issue was that one man -- the navigator -- alone, carried out the changes to alter the ships course, thereby creating all the damage to the ship and loss of life. I cannot believe that a procedure was not in place for the captain and navigator to complete the process together with numerous checks required to alter course, and where was the AI computer to stop the navigator from making a mistake?
That aside, I thought the movie had good tension throughout, and even though one knows how it ends, still has good replay value. Excellent PQ. Be sure to watch it in a very dark room. Space is black.
