Bud Johnson, an apathetic, beer-slinging, lovable loser, is coasting through a life that has passed him by. The one bright spot is his precocious, over-achieving twelve year-old daughter Molly. She takes care of both of them, until one mischievous moment on Election Day, when she accidentally sets off a chain of events which culminates in the election coming down to one vote... her dad's.

Swing Vote Blu-ray, Video Quality

 


The fact that Swing Vote has been presented in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1, encoded in full 1080p using the AVC Mpeg-4 codec and released by Disney, one would expect this to be one slick looking Blu-ray. Unfortunately, that's simply not the case. While there's nothing technically wrong with this Blu-ray release, this drab looking film never even begins to approach eye-candy status. Swing Vote just wasn't filmed to be a particularly eye-catching movie. The film's color palette is bland and boring and only a handful of scenes feature vibrant colors. Contrast is average, but effective and detail is - - well -- average.

Ultimately, I can't fault the transfer for any of this, of course, as Swing Vote looks precisely how it is supposed to look. Swing Vote scores a zero in the style category, but this Blu-ray edition reproduces that lack of flair nearly flawlessly.

Since Swing Vote is a film that celebrates the responsibilities and patriotism of an average American citizen, it should come as no surprise that the movie's audio is, much like its video, as average and unpretentious as can be. The film's 5.1 DTS HD-Master Audio soundtrack does a fine job of reproducing material that is decidedly bland. Dialogue is accurately portrayed and forms the backbone of this front biased soundtrack. Music is nicely balanced in the front channels while subwoofer usage is infrequent yet effective when present. Surround activity is practically non-existant, save the occasional flourish of crowd noise.

Swing Vote isn't going to win any awards for its sound design, but you can rest assured that this Blu-ray edition presents the movie precisely as it was intended to be heard.
