Boondock Saints

Finally. This was one of the firs movies I wanted on Blu-Ray and all I can say is that Fox delivers again with a cleaned up picture and amazing sound. The movie always was a little grainy and the movies remains true to that.

Thanks Fox. Not get cracking on Walk the Line, Fight Club, and the Alien films.

I'll tip her.

Review

I was very excited when I found out this title was being released. I had hoped to pop it in and watch my favorite cult movie with great picture clarity and quality. while it not the most impressive blu-ray transfers i've ever seen i was very happy to find out that the letterbox format which my special edition dvd release I bought back in 2007 had been upgraded to 2:35 widescreen format for us with hdtvs to watch without those bars at the side and bottom of the screen. The movie is still fantastic and I totally enjoyed it (watching it for the 10th time overall) and the audio is superb as well as cool menus, including a directors and theatrical cut versions of the film.

There are a few scenes that do look exceptional like when their sitting in the car outside the strip club planning on killing Vincenso, as well as the garage shoot em up scene, but other than that, a pretty decent blu-ray quality transfer by my take. (probably because of how old the film is and the original format it was shot in, there is little they could do to make it outstanding). Still this is a top quality movie so I'm happy with the purchase. I know I'll be able to watch it many times over again and get my moneys worth of enjoyment from it. so for the interested buyer; if you want to test the limits of blu-ray video capability and pondering on whether this film will do it for ya, you may be slightly disappointed. But for those die-hard fans like myself, you absolutely have to go out and pick up this

p.s - just on a sidenote; yes i did say 2:35 widescreen format, the 2:39:1 format stated in the specs here is incorrect. the proper specs are given on the back on the movie.

South Boston At It's Finest!

As you can see from other reviews above me, This is the story of two Irish brothers living in South Boston, MA. While out celebrating St. Patrick's Day at their local pub, a few Russian Mobsters decide to come and ruin the party. Well, from here on out the brothers, along with their mob flunkie, Rocco, decide it's time to make all those who have sinned pay their debts.

The PQ is the best it has ever looked, a definite upgrade from either the standard DVD or the SEDVD. The AQ is okay, nothing to write home about but still very good for this low budget CLASSIC!

Violence with purpose!...

Another great "shoot 'em up" action movie, only this time I thought the writer and director did an exceptionaly great job. Good acting, well written and with an ending that you can feel good about. I've heard a lot of good things about this movie and now after finally seeing it I can see why.

As for the picture quality here, yes, it is an older movie and that definitely shows throughout but even so, I thought this one looked absolutely amazing. Very sharp with plenty of fine detail and depth throughout, a very small haze through most of it but it's really not that bad, believe me, I have seen FAR worse Blu-Ray movies than this one.

Not Bad...

A good transfer, only occasionally does the audio have anything worth noticing (there's mostly dialogue) but it a vast improvement in sound over the DVD. The theatrical cut looks better, the directors cut looks way too dark and lacks details in a painfully noticeable way.

A must buy for fans, a great purchase for those who've never seen it but enjoy movies like Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Lucky # Slevin.

Shoot 'em up...bang, bang!

I consider myself a serious movie goer, but I must admit that I had never heard anything about this cult classic until resently. I read the reviews all over the internet, and the majority were praising this film in one way or another. For that reason, I did a blind buy of the movie. After the first 15 minutes or so of watching this flick, I truly thought that I had wasted my money, but soon after things started picking up.

It became clear that this movies' strong points are not the action so much, but the dialog that goes on between the characters. Some of the lines were so funny that I could literally feel my sides hurting. Whether they were meant to be funny or not, I don't know, but that made it even more entertaining actually. No, this is not the best movie that I've ever seen, but it ranks high on entertainment value. If you don't take this movie too seriously, you'll have a lot more fun watching it. I am very happy with my purchase, and I plan on watching it again very soon.

If you don't have a wild or dark sense of humor, I would suggest that you rent this movie first. As far as the AQ and PQ goes, they were both pretty solid. Nothing to write home about, but neither were a distraction. If you are already a fan of this film, I definitely recommend it!

"It was a fire fight!!!"

This has got to be one of the best blind-purchases I ever made. The movie is downright original and exciting; its story is well-made and interesting; the characters are excellent; the photography is excellent; the production design is quite slick; there are loads of great shoot-out scenes; and the music rocks. It gets weird and very violent in some parts, but I think that's all part of this film's charm.

The disc offers a decent video quality; the image is detailed, sharp, and clean. It probably doesn't have has good contrast as it could have, and is a bit grainy. The sound quality is good. It includes some good special features and two cuts of the movie (theatrical and unrated).

The Boondock Saints

This is my second favorite movie of all time. The Blu-ray transfer is very nice, considering I don't watch special features usually, because this version of the movie has almost none of those. However, if you love the movie and just want a better-looking, better-sounding version of it, this is the one to get.

and the saint's come shooting in............

The Boondock Saints is one of those b-side genre flicks that goes un-noticed until it reaches home video and essentially becomes a cult movie. Boondock is such a movie. Lots of shoot'em, gangsta violence and a host of characters so cartoonish you have to love 'em. What's cool about this movie is it hits hard and has no problem with it. Style and some old fashioned kick ass class that makes this one a must own. I'm looking forward to the second one once it hits blu. Fox hands over a decent presentation of the movie. PQ is firm without to much grain. AQ is soft considering the DTS factor and extra's are slim but noteworthy. This set includes the theatrical cut and director's cut. So 2 for the price of 1 and you can't go wrong.

Good flick!!!

I went and purchased this movie today, after hearing so much about it and how great it is. I will say I
did not love it as much as the people who told me i have to see it. That does not mean it isn't a good
movie because it is a good movie, just not what i was expecting after hearing all the praise about this
movie from my friends. The characters, along with the story are very interesting. The PQ is up to par
in my opinion along with the audio also. I can recommend picking this one up to add to the collection
if you are a fan of shoot em up movies. Overall I was pleased with this purchase and the movie its
self gets a 3.5 from me. Not a bad flick but not the best either. Needless to say it is entertaining and
a good popcorn flick.

Yes!!

One of my favorite movies finally made it to Blu-Ray. Has a very very good transfer so the PQ is great. Makes you forget how old the film actually is. The AQ is just as good as the PQ. Great 5.1 lossles mix. If you have not seen this movie definitely go get it!

Give a cult classic the blu makeover with great results

Boondock Saints, a movie with a very interesting history is here on blu-ray. If you don't know about Boondock, where have you been? As for us fans, we can thank Fox for another solid release.

PQ- finally, we can watch Boondock Saints with an almost perfect picture. Remember, this film was filmed with a low budget, so the film is going to have some dirt, fading and popping, but they have really cleaned this up since the special edition dvd that came out a few years ago. The film is now brighter, has some better contrast ratios, and very nice texturing. Take the scene where Connor, Murphy, and Roc are sitting at the table, talking about their "mission"; all the guns, beer cans, cigarette butts, leftover food, and even the cat, are cleaned up to show great detail. I noticed no edge enhancement, no fuzziness or blurriness (something the special editon dvd had), or no overly washed out colors. The dirt and popping I mentioned earlier is only evident near the beginning and verly little near the end. This is a very good looking movie now, even after nine years.

AQ- to this date, I have never heard a bad blu-ray, and the Boondock Saints is no exception. In fact, even for being almost ten years old, this movie sounds like something that was shot in a soundstage recently. Everything from the pounding music to the slightest whisper is loud and clear. For proof of this, and anyone who has seen the movie knows where I'm coming from, the bullet from the cat scene rang loud and clear through my surround sound.

Bonus Features- this is the only area that I was hoping for more. For anyone, like me, who owns the unrated special edition dvd or has owned it, the extras from that are directly ported over to this release. Again, I guess it goes back to the cost matter that they didn't film any extra footage or have any interviews up their sleeve, but for new-comers, re-buyers, or for us fans, what is presented here is good. We have, in its entirety, the Boondock Saints script, outtakes footage, seven deleted scenes, two audio commentaries (one by writer/director Troy Duffy and Billy Connolly), the theatrical trailer, and both the R and Untrated Director's Cut of the film. The only blu-ray exclusive is the D-box motion code, or where if you have a special setup and platform, the on screen sound will move your seat accordingly. If you have the equipment, I imagine this would be a cool feature, but I don't, so I can't review that accordingly.

Overall- I am very happy with this release, and that we have what is really the master version of this movie. Yes, you will either be one of the millions of fans of love it, or be one that shakes your head and never touches it again, but this is infact a true cult classic with a huge following. The PQ and AQ are great, although the PQ is not quite reference grade, the AQ makes up for that. The special features are great, although some new material would have been the home-run for this movie. If you are a fan, definetly pick this up, and if you are new to this classic, at least give this one a rental.

Classic!

This movie is a classic!
you get these 2 religious Irish brothers who are put in a situation of circumstances where they must kill to save their own lives. After being dubbed "saints" from the media they get this idea to go around and take out all the trash in south Boston. Starting with Russian mob members. Soon after the "saints" good friend "the funny man" who works as a runner for the Italian mob gets double crossed. With "the funny mans" knowledge of what the members of the mob do on a day to day basis the "Saints" with the newly added assistance of the "funny man" start to make hits on the Italian mob.

Meanwhile Gay FBI detective Played to a T by Dafoe is on a manhunt. A man hunt that leads him to dead end after dead end. Frustration starts to build as he has to deal with some morons at the PD. His comedic roll as Agent Smecker really lightens the mood between the intense gun fights.

I really like the cinematography of this movie. See they would show the crime scene 1st as Smecker would try to fit the pieces together. THEN they would flash back to what really happened.

This movie has it all action, comedy. Internal conflict with whats considered right and wrong.

PQ was a 5- nice crisp clear picture
SQ was great all the way through. But I have heard better so I cant rightfully give this movie a 5

I didn't watch any of the special features so I marked this NA.
However in the subtitle section this movie has a feature new to me called the "Dbox" Basically from what I gather you need to purchase a device that attaches to you seat and vibrates along with the action in the movie.

Well that was unexpected

Until watching the copy I recently ordered for the very first time I had no idea what this movie was supposed to be about. I honestly didn't see that coming. Wildly colorful characters and an outrageous plot from South Boston, one of my favourite places. Williem Dafoe was hilarious, what a performance. After reading other reviews I can definetly see why this movie has such a cult following. You either like it or hate it I guess.

I didn't find the transfer as bad as the reviewer did. Sure it wasn't perfect but the low budget look and feel to the film totally compliments the story from dingy ol' South Boston. Trust me, there is worse PQ out there. The pictures that show up on the reviewer's page are way more faded than the movie looked on my Sony, I am not sure what those are all about. The audio delivered a punching track and sounded great.

As for extras, I might watch the Billy Connelly audio commentary cause he's a funny guy. Nice that they have an extended edition of the movie. The outtakes and deleted scenes are real short but neat. There is a screen play... who would sit there and read that?

Overall Boondock Saints is an out there movie and if you are a fan of dark comedies, action shoot them up movies or artsy film festival stuff; this movie is for you, worth every penny.

AEQUITUS VERITAS:

The Boondock Saints blew me away when I first witnessed it back in high school, and it does it all over again in this Blu-ray release.

First off there is an extended directors cut of the film, complete with full commentary. I am always sucker for a good commentary, this one included. You get out-takes and bloopers which, as a rule of thumb, are always a welcomed addition and they even include the kitchen sink of movie extras: the script!

This Blu-ray is superior to the DVD release in all aspects, although it may not be worth the upgrade from DVD initially the new letterbox ratio sold it for me. My TV was made for 2:35, and Boondock Saints looks damn good in it!

Worth at least two pennies, right in the eye sockets.
