My Dream Fulfilled
I have a minor in film and studied under the great film historian Rudy Behlmer. I've always had a keen interest in the silent era.
While I share everyone's love of the impressive quality of modern films on blu ray, I've also regarded it as a way to present and preserve our silent treasures. Too often people relate silent films to the scratchy 4th of 5th generation clips they've seen on TV. While attending Art Center in LA, a local theater ran a Buster Keaton retrospective using new prints wet gate printed from the best sources. The image quality was stunning. This version's image quality is at least as good as my memory of those prints.
Buster Keaton has always been my favorite of the three silent comedic greats, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd. He's a better storyteller than Lloyd and not nearly as cloyingly manipulative as Chaplin. His character just struck a chord with me.
"The General" stands on its own as a great story and a great film; it needs no couching in its genre or time. Get it for the sheer pleasure of watching one of the best films ever made.
I'd like to thank KINO for the excellent job of restoration and presentation they did. I hope this is the first of many classic silent films they will release in blu-ray.
Finally blu-ray.com is getting expensive for me. I've recently bought numerous releases based on the reviews I find here. I click to the Amazon site from here, I hope this shows Amazon their sponsorship of this site is well worth it. |
