A compilation of 3 of the best movies ever made. With a decent technic

Usuallly I go into the Plot first. But if you don't know the plot of the Godfather Movies you really shouldn't call yourself a film fan.

Just to go in it for a bit:
Part 1: Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) who first doesn't want to have anything to do with the family business rise to the head of the Corleone Family.
Part2: It consists of two movies: First, the continuation of the first one, showing how everything is continuing it's path. The second Part shows the Life of the young Godfather, who was played in the first one by Marlon Brando. This time we see a young Vito. Portrayed by Robert DeNiro.
Part3: Michael is trying to completely legitimize the business but get's pulled back in. It also shows the rise of his successor, who is played by a young Andy Garcia.

All of these movies, especially the first two, are probably the best movies ever made. I don't have any more to say about that.

PQ: They have done a pretty decent job in restoring the original feel of the movie. Even though they tweaked the colors a bit to give it more of a vintage look. Purists might object to that but I think it serves the movies well. The vintage look only applies to the first two. The 3rd one is just restored pretty well. The complete restoration processes took them over a year. Which is documented in the bonus material. Of which there is a lot. Usually I don't care about that but with movies like this you have to look behind the scenes. Back to the PQ: There is a lot of video noise and grain present in the first two, but considering the age of the prints that was to be expected. You can't expect the quality of a brand new movie from pictures that are decades old. Even though the transfer isn't completely satisfactory, I doubt you will ever see a better presentation of those movies.

SQ: All three movies were equipped with a True HD Soundtrack. It's a crisp sound but mostly front heavy. But considering that the first two originally had a monaural soundtrack (which is also included) you can't expect a lot. Once again, if you consider the source it's a decent effort. Only Part 3 has more of a 3 dimensional aura, since it is a much newer movie. In Part 3 the surround speakers often get a lot to do.
Still, I can't give more than a 3.5 rating on the sound. Which is still good. Like the PQ, those movies will never sound any better.

Summary: If you don't have them yet, order them immediately. These movies are part of history. If you already do have them on DVD, like I do, buy them anyway. From a technical standpoint the improvement is an enormous one.

Addendum: All Bonus Material from the last DVD Edition is included, as well of a bunch of material especially produced for this edition. It's definitely worth checking out.

Best. Movie. Ever.

The PQ isn't anything spectacular, but I don't imagine it capable of looking much better for a movie from the early 70s. This is hands down the best movie ever made and if possible I would give it more than a 5. There is no reason any true fan of cinema should not own this movie on every possible medium.

Again, must own.

EDIT: After comparing it to the DVD, I can't begin to say how impressed I am with the transfer. Colors are brighter and cleaner. Italy looks amazing. It's almost as if they used one camera for the first half of the movie and an entirely different and better camera for the second half. I am upgrading the video to a 4.5 from a 4 because of how impressed I am with the meticulous effort that had to be put into polishing the transfer. At first I thought it looked a lot like A&E HD, but after really comparing, I could just see how much better the Blu-ray is. Simply wow.

Way better than VHS

Last time I watched this was on VHS and this was 1000 times better; Know anyone looking for the VHS copies?

What else can I say that wasn't already said? These movies are essential for your library and a great way to spend a Sunday.

Godfather: Fantastic piece of movie history. Great acting in the young careers of so many actors.
Godfather II: Argueably one of the only movies where the sequel is better than the original.
Godfather III: Often overlooked compared to the first two but a modern day take on a classic.

The filters used on the cameras back then date the movies and complete the experience. Sure it makes the picture look flat but this is intended. The audio is clear where all the dialogue is rich and the party scenes are full. A very stylized set of films.

Real movie fans, just go out and buy it.

Well done

It's probably best to approach this series like a mini-series, as it's long, it's deep, it's detail, and it should be taken in with patience, letting the mood envelope you - which is also true of the film's picture quality.

I've read many complaints about this transfer - of its more orangish tinge, and that it wasn't enough of an improvement over the 2001 DVD transfers - even that the Blu was grainier.

Well, I for one liked this new version. I found the new colour timing gave more consistency to the films as in the 2001 transfers, some shots were warm, and some shots had a greenish tinge to them. That, and the new timing gave more of a throw-back to old times, vintage, sort of feel.

As for the complaints about the Blu not being an improvement (or much of one) over standard - I did a side-by-side comparison, and of course there was an improvement. The 2001 transfers, I actually liked, but naturally the blu was evidently better, especially in longer shots, and despite many claiming the Blu was grainier, upon side-by-side comparison, it actually isn't. And, the Blu transfers had high-bit rates (every now and then I glanced at them seeing at least 26mbps to into their 30s).

Overall, I found the Blu transfers to involve me more into the picture. The Godfather 1 & 2 have never looked amazing (I've seen them on TV and VHS as well), so these transfers, being what I'd consider a 4 against all other Blurays, is quite a feat and greatly appreciated.

Gold Standard Restoration

For those that are complaining about PQ, watch the feature, Emulsional Rescue: Revealing the Godfather, on the Bonus Disc about the restoration process. It explains that the film was shot underexposed, vs the industry standard of shooting properly exposed and then adjusting the look in the processing lab. So there are no details in the black areas of the film. Coppola really didn't have anything to do with the restoration other then getting the ball rolling. Gordon Willis, the cinematographer, was consulted on how the film was shot to try and the lab restored the original orange tint. Coppola says it looks more beautiful then he remembered it, I agree.

Here are screen shot comparisons of the different versions:

Excellent PQ

I read some negative reviews about PQ and too much grain. Can't see what they are all talking about. I have been watching these movies 3-4 times a year, started on VHS and then DVD, I am familiar with the old PQ. The PQ is leaps and bounds above previous releases. The scenes in the garden, Sicily, LA, and the intro to LA and Las Vegas were improved a lot.

My wife, who is most definetly not a videophile or even more than slightly interested in PQ and AQ, commented a few times on how the PQ is superior to the DVD release. Jury is in.

If you have your TV adjusted properly, PQ will look great. Some features that make the picture sharper, like black stretch (Toshiba) and others, bring out the grain. I use this feature with DVDs not Blu-rays. Turn it off and Blu-ray will look better.

Also, the sound is great too. Hospital scene, felt like I was there.

Epic!!!

That's the only word to describe this, EPIC! Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece was saved thanks to the restoration.

Before Scarface(1983), New Jack City, Carlito's Way, Goodfellas, The Untouchables was The Godfather. Truly the greatest Mobster Epic of all time.

This is loaded with so much extras. The PQ & AQ are fantastic. Jokerboy649 is right, "Not A True Blu-ray Collection Without This Collection!"

Nothing will ever beat the Godfather

The first two movies are classics, easily among the best films ever made. The third is sufficient, a pleasant addition to the world of the Corleones.

The video is stunning, a great revelation to the DVD release a few years ago. The picture is now clear and colourful, while retaining its classic cinematography. A great improvement over the gloomy, dark, and undetailed image of the DVDs.

The sound is incredible. One just has to compare the gunshots at the restaurant scene or the tollbooth scene to witness the differences between this remastered version and any inferior one before it.

Extras are great and detailed. A must-buy for all fans and newcomers.

An offer no one should refuse.........................................

One of the greatest trilogy's of modern cinema. Though some will argue Part III is not a worthy entry, but parts I & II are. The Trilogy as a whole is one epic story of family and business. The rise and fall of Vito Corleone in his ladder years as depicted in The Godfather. The Godfather part II spins the tale in two different directions. Vito as a child and a young man making his way in the slums of NYC. The Godfather Trilogy is also the story of Michael Corleone, his distance from the family business in part I, then forced into it, his rise of power in Part II and his attempt to ligitimize his business in Part III. The Trilogy is a must own for all movie fanatics and person's who love a classic gangster film. Paramount delivers a great blu release as director Frances Ford Coppolla himself supervised the restoration of all three films to be presented in thier intended original theatrical form. All three films look and sound great. This set also features all the bonus material that was introduced with the DVD box set from a few years back. Now if we could ever get the trilogy in chronilogical order as it was once presented on VHS the weaves the entire trilogy in order of events from Vito's childhood to Michael death from old age.

Great Movie

In response to TheZoof, 2001 ASO looks great because it was originally filmed on the rediculous 70mm film format, not 35mm like every other film. The possible resolution is way higher in that movie when speaking of a digital tranfer. Godfather is a must have and the cozy glow of the film just invites you to enjoy this 36 year old film as if it were an old friend.

Coppola is genious!

And so is his restoration of propably the best movie trilogy on earth. Earlier my favourite movie trilogy was Star Wars, but not anymore after seeing this blu-ray version of Godfather! Highly recommend to everyone. Blu-ray brings back the whole spirit of the movie. Restoration is so well made, that you donīt have to bother to think of questions like: is there grain or is there enough bass. Everything is in very good balance! Just sit back and enjoy!!

Simply Wow

Watching these movies is simply beautiful on blu. The occasional scene has what I consider too much grain, but they are not the character driven scenes, they are the short transition scenes (such as Tom flying to California). I never would have expected Godfather to look this good and everyone involved needs to be commended.

The Definitive Godfather Edition

The 2001 DVD versions of the epic Godfather films were poor, there was contrast wavering and various other artifacts. Fortunately, they have restored the first two films and remastered the third one for this Blu-ray release. The picture is now rock solid--colors are bold, specially in the opening scenes of both Godfather I & II (the wedding in GF I & the Lake Tahoe sequence in GF II). Black levels are solid--which is good news since many of the scenes are underexposed, as was DP Gordon Willis's wish. Yes, the picture is quite grainy--but it was always present, and was an important factor in retaining the original intended look of the film. Sharpness fluctuates, specially in Part II as it goes back and forth in time: the scenes with a young Vito Corleone are soft, and almost in a sepia tone, as intended. The 'present' scenes with Michael Corleone are more bolder, and some scenes in Cuba as Michael is driving to meet Hyman Roth are very beautiful. Personally, I am very satisfied with the picture.
Audio is enhanced with 5.1 remix (there is also the original mono track included). The 5.1 Dolby TrueHD is also a step up from previous releases--subtle sounds, the memorable score by Nino Rota sounds exquisite. I also noticed that the gunshots were robust, and ambient sounds--specially in Sicily (Part I) were Michael is in exile and also on the scenes in Sicily in Part II were more noticeable and encompassing than before.
The bonus disc, while having all the extras from the initial 2001 DVD release, also has many extra features in HD. They are all worthwhile and interesting--my favorite being 'The Godfather World' where a variety of artists come and share their thoughts about the film, including Spielberg, William Friedkin, George Lucas etc.
This is the version that should be in every movie lover's collection! Hats off to everyone who made this possible. Great work.
