PQ is an improvement, but the Theatrical cut is dissapointing
Because of rights issues, the Blu-ray release of Manhunter contains only the theatrical cut. Despite the differences between this and my preferred cut, I would still probably give this cut a 10/10; it's a fantastic movie. I give it 4/5 here rather than 5/5 to stress the fact that there is a superior version of the film out there: the Anchor Bay DVD cut. My biggest problem with the theatrical cut is that one of my favorite scenes in this film – and simply one of my favorite scenes of all time -- is not present in the theatrcal cut: a late-night tryst between Graham and Molly in a gorgeously lit high-rise hotel in Washington, DC. As far as plot, it's not necessary, but atmospherically, it's invaluable. Also, cut from the Anchor Bay version but retained here is a reductive and hokey pseudo-psychological explanation of Dollarhyde by Graham, something to the effect of, "...he was abused as a child. Someone made him this way. I sympathize with that. But as an adult, who murders families to fuel his trivial fantasies, someone should blow the sick fuck out of his socks!" I don't want to hear that silly line every time I watch this film. It undermines Dollarhyde's plight and makes Graham sound like an ignorant psychology undergraduate. Other things are rearranged to the detriment of the film. I rented this Blu-ray from Netflix, I didn't purchase it. Even if it were released individually, I'd be loath to purchase it for the simple reason that when I watch this movie, I don't want to watch the theatrical cut.
As for PQ, it's pretty good, but problematic. The opening shots looks terrible. Certainly among the worst images I've ever seen on a Blu-ray. The colors are entirely desaturated, there's a huge amount of grain and what appear to be print damage. Looks to have been sourced from a videotape. Also, the opening, because it's cut slightly differently, is much less tense than on the AB cut. A bad way to start, but from there it gets a lot better. There's more detail here than on any previous DVD version, but I fear the colors are slightly less saturated than on the Anchor Bay version -- I've heard this complaint of the MGM DVD version too. It looks good, but not leagues better than the Anchor Bay DVD, the home video version of Manhunter that, obviously, I'd recommend. That the Blu-ray has more detail is indisputable, and the color difference – not counting the opening shots – are probably negligible, but the Anchor Bay DVD, from a PQ standpoint, isn't rendered useless by this release; it's not a colossal PQ improvement. Also, not a huge problem, but a persistent and regular annoyance: frames are missing from certain parts of the movie. There were probably 6 instances in the movie -- maybe more, I didn't count -- where the video noticeable jumped as if 3 or 4 frames were gone. Caused a jump in audio too. Again, such skipping isn't present on the Anchor Bay DVD.
I don't have a great audio system in the first place, just a subwoofer and two tweakers, but I had to listen to this using headphones because my roommates were both asleep. The headphones are fine Sony studio pair, but I obviously can't say much for dimensionality, etc. The audio was okay, music all sounded great, but dialog could be muffled at times. This is probably a fault of the original recording, but either way: audio isn't terribly impressive, but it gets the job done. If you want a detailed account of AQ, you'll have to look elsewhere.
No extras to speak of here. The Anchor Bay DVD has a commentary track by Mann – which is very interesting – as well as some cast (Noonan, Cox, Petersen) and crew (Spinotti) interviews.
In summation, if you are new to this film, rent the Anchor Bay anamorphic DVD. PQ is very good for a DVD and the cut is better. This Blu-ray is great for those who are die-hard fans of the theatrical cut (and there's a whole cult of Mann theatrical cut fans who disavow all of his many director's cuts) or those who have no strong opinions about cut and just wanted the added detail of the Blu-ray. For me, this Blu-ray is more or less a bust: good but not stunning PQ, no extras, and the lack of my preferred cut. My recommendation: get the Anchor Bay DVD (http://www.amazon.com/Manhunter-William-Petersen/dp/6305972575/) |

Response to danyuld Manhunter review
You must be looking at a different BD than I am: the video on Manhunter is a 2.5 or 3 at best given the lifeless colors and SD-quality, and giving a 2.5 for Extras when there ARE NO extras seems a little strange |

Manhunter only (picture and audio) Review
Picture quality on first glance seems superb - lots of added detail - intact grain structure, and dts hd ma 5.1
Sorry Blu Orbit - But i think Manhunter looks excellent - and as good as you are going to see on this format - im not sure what you expect. I can see way more detail than in my SD DVD.
Extras merely relates to this package as a whole, and I have modified my Manhunter statement to reflect that. |

Manhunter
This release of Michael Mann's 'Manhunter' is about as perfunctory as it gets. It's packaged in a generic-looking triple pack with 'Silence of the Lambs' and 'Hannibal' and there are absolutely no special features (there aren't even names for the chapter stops). It's a surprise, then, that it looks and sounds as good as it does. The movie is old (1986) and it's generally referred to as a footnote to the other two in this set. Still, I've seen it dozens of times over the years (on film, cable television, VHS, DVD) and this Blu-Ray picture is the sharpest I've ever seen it. The night time and darkly lit scenes are crisp; the lights and colors (sometimes used expressionistically) are clearer and show more detail than I've ever seen.
I'm not bothered by the lack of special features; this was such as unlikely candidate for Blu-Ray release, it's a treat just to have the movie in such nice shape. |

The Hannibal Collection
I really just bought this set just to get ridley scotts ''Hannibal'', it is my personal favourite out of the trilogy, and i was really dissappointed with the half ass transfer, to be truthful i dont think they did anything except give it better audio, i watched this on regular dvd before i popped in the bluray version and i gotta say the 2001 dvd actually looked better which is kinda weird. It also really pisses me off that you cant buy these movies seperate you have to buy the boxset, so i paid 60 bucks for the one movie really and it looks pretty bad for a movie with such beautiful cinimatography. By the way i live in canada so maybe there are better quality discs in the states or somewhere else. Manhunter and silence of the lambs were pretty good quality though, its just hannibal that needs to be reissued. For me that was 60 bucks down the crapper. |

WTF is with Fox
This is terrible quality. I am returning my copy because Hannibal is in no way a Blu-Ray and the other 2 are just so-so. I'm sick of Fox Blu-Ray releases. They are the worse studio for Blu-Ray. |
