What possessed anyone to put this on Blu-ray?
Jesse Johnson should go back to doing stunts. The story surrounds Tallis, a genetically engineered soldier whose unit was destroyed in war with the Drone Police, a law enforcement army of a futuristic society. He has given up the fight, against his instincts, and focuses on survival, until he runs into a female soldier of a relatively haphazard resistance force. Together, they go on to attempt to save the world in a two versus the rest scenario. The story is unoriginal, and the script is hopeless. The characters are never developed (though we know Tallis has no character). There are essentially two settings, downtown L.A. possibly and a defunct refinery. There were a lot of explosions and a lot of stunts, a testament to Johnson's background. Special effects (tracer rounds, fake blood spurts, exploding heads) were humorously bad, and the hand to hand combat was ill choreographed and obviously fake.
The video quality was close to rock bottom for Blu-ray. The grain was extreme. Upconversion of most DVD sources is much, much better. Perhaps this is the "artists" intent, but the art is lost on me. Lighting and color were filtered or muted, obviously to give a postapocalyptic ambience.
The audio was the best part of this movie. The menu offered Dolby 5.1, DTS 5.1, PCM 2.0 and Dolby 2.0. I compared the DD 5.1 and the DTS 5.1 and found the DTS version to offer much more in the way of LFE and possibly more detail in the surround channels, but not necessarily for the better. Compared to the Dolby track, the details were murky and the dialog displaced, sometimes muddy and sometimes over-reverberant. I favored the crispness and clarity of the Dolby, despite the more mellow LFE effects.
The only extra feature was a garden variety "making of" featurette that really did not add or detract from my overall impression. |

How do you say "Where's the Beef?
I read the reviews here before I watched it so I was prepped for watching a really really really bad
movie. I sat in my chair chomping on popcorn and found myself in a war zone with casualties all
around pretty much from the beginning. Puddling through the different scenes and watching
character interaction I realized some things could have been believable and other things were
pretty cheezeeeee. Anyone who watched this movie will know what I am talking about because
they stood out and didn't require a Cinema degree to figure these things out.
Things that could have been believable include the; training classes, squad leaders attitude, drone
army, human attitude, and of course our favorite part: the final confrontation between Tallis and
that freaky looking red drone.
Don't even get me started when I saw Tallis and Girl (yes: that was in the Credits as her name)
kiss and share a few intimate moments. That was the worse of the worse and couldn't believe Girl
would even pursue him. She must have been ready to jump anything since we all know Tallis isn't
even really all there mentally or physically. Let me stop right now...getting edgy now!
As far as the video and audio: Video was very grainy as the reviews state. It was clear to me the
intent was to be there coming from someone's camcorder - like a reporter or someone. The camera
moves was not staged and seemed to jumble erratically and I found it hard to stay up. It was clear
to be the Director's intention for first hand - in your face reality. I am just sure how how effective
that was because it stopped after the whole 699 were wiped out (Tallis left standing). Audio-wise:
few times at 440k bps did I find comfort but there were a few moments. Dialog was really really
bad and had a hard time getting it. Next time will be headphones if I dare watch it again which I
will! Some of the explosions were good but most were bad. There just wasn't enough 5.1
separation or usage of the rear channels and too muddy to sort any of it out.
In summary, I think it was an okay movie because I understood it and the plot but I also
understand why it was $7.99. I thought it was going to be the lack of HD audio that would get me
but in the course of it I found Katee's role much less tantalizing and desirable than her BSG role
and that is what ultimately made me to decide to buy it. She could have done so much more as
the only real actress in the movie. Again, it wasn't horrible but nothing memorable. |

Good for a Sunday afternoon movie on TV
What a disappoint this movie is. Now I know why Fry has it for $10 regular price.
The video is grainy. Have to turn off the projector and use a smaller screen to make this viewable. Story line is weak, seem like the two main characters take battle like going to work. After their "8 to 5" battle, they return home for the night. Acting is poor, combat sequence is not very believable. The movie is poorly directed.
The special effect is like someone drawing over the film with a felt-tip pen. However, the sound effect is good. Unless you get free rental, I would not spend any money on this. If you want to buy this, make sure the case is good as this is just about the best part of the package. |
