This Is More Of A Fantasy Than A Nightmare

I have always loved this movie, never have even doubted that. Ever since Blu-Ray started, I wanted this one on Blu-Ray. I bought this first day on pre-order and received it and popped it in my player. The video was amazing and looked more like real life than animation. The audio sounded great, not like it was recorded. The extras were better than the DVD version. Overall, one of the best animation discs out there. Disney did another great job on an older movie.

The best this film has ever looked or sounded.

There are very few films which fully capture my imagination and make me believe in true "movie magic"...that is, the ability to remove you from your world and transport you to somewhere completely new and wonderful. So few, in fact, that before the latest Pixar gem - Wall-E - hit theatres this summer, it had been 15 years since a new film gave me such pure viewing pleasure. Before Wall-E and EVE, there were Jack and Sally.

The Nightmare Before Christmas has long been one of my favourite films. Having previously bought both VHS versions and both DVDs of this film, I was truly hoping for an exceptional first outing on Blu-ray for this masterpiece. The VHS versions were, well, VHS, and both DVDs featured disappointing, non-anamorphic transfers.

The fifth time's a charm, I guess...this truly is the best this film has ever looked or sounded, and that includes the recent 3-D theatrical re-releases. While I enjoyed the film in 3-D, this is how The Nightmare Before Christmas is meant to be seen.

The 1080p AVC-encoded video is absolutely stunning. The muted, contrast-heavy palette of Halloweentown, the shiny, colourful tones of Christmastown and all the things in between are rendered beautifully here, with zero artifacts and plenty of perceived depth. There are many moments in this film where you will feel you are on the superbly detailed miniature sets alongside Jack Skellington, the Mayor and the rest of the wonderfully bizarre cast. This is reference material if ever I've seen it.

The sound is also expertly mastered and far more immersive than any previous release could manage. The 7.1 channel Dolby TrueHD track features enough truly sparkling moments to warrant a perfect rating...again, it's how this film is meant to sound, with strong bass, crisp dialogue (especially in the songs) and a depth which brings the world to life. Surround channels are almost always active with both music and ambient sound, and rear-to-front pans are exceptionally well done...you really get a sense of just how far behind you something is before it crosses over your shoulder and into your field of view.

Extras are excellent...I'm ecstatic that both the Tim Burton shorts which appeared on the previous DVD release (Vincent and Frankenweenie) were included here. And Christopher Lee's reading of Burton's original poem (which served as the inspiration for this film) is a very pleasant surprise. There are plenty of others to view on this disc, but I haven't yet had the opportunity to view them. What I have seen to this point is of fantastic quality.

Overall, this is a near-perfect release. The list price may be high, but so is the quality of this release. I paid $25.99 for this, and I consider that a bargain given this film's place in my heart, and the fact that it has finally received the full-on royal home video treatment by Disney. It doesn't get much better than this.

And for the record, of the 99 Blu-rays I now own, this is the only one I would give a perfect Overall score to.

"What's this? What's this?" A Tim Burton classic.

Audio was the real show-stopper! The musical sequences sounded the best.

As for video, there was a slight shakiness in some sequences, although this seems to be from the movie's animation technologies, not from transfer.

As usual from Disney, there's plenty of extras, but I didn't watch them yet.

This movie may not be everyone's cup of tea, but for those who like dark humor, this movie deserves a serious look.

Worth checking out, still motion is cool

Visually speaking this is one crisp movie. I played with my tv settings and it seemed like puppets were coming out of the tv. To be honest, you can't get a better picture than still motion.

Since the movie itself is 76 minutes, they had a lot of space for audio tracks. Gotta love 7.1 surround, however, this track in particular is very singy so don't expect to be floored by the effect, but 7.1 anything is sweet. There's a lot happening in the movie and the surrounds are used a lot.

The movie itself is pretty sweet, however, I only see myself watching this around the Sept-Jan timeframe making it a seasonal movie. That and it is 76 minutes, did I mention that? Good story and all, but 76 minutes...

Digital copy is pretty neat, I wish more movies come with this. I like having movies on my ipod when at the gym, makes time on the treadmil go by faster and it is way better than staring at the time remaining. Butt-load of features too, good stuff.

Despite the Blu-ray's awesomeness in video, audio and extras, I really do not see myself watching this movie a whole lot, hence the overall 4. I bought this without having ever seen the movie before and IMO, it was over too quick, I mean 76 minutes quick. Regardless, a must see. It's a great classic that uses a unique film style. Check it out.

Great Movie

I do not buy many blu-ray movies. I've been collecting blu-rays since the PS3 came out and we have about 30 movies. This is one of those classic movies that has a great replay value.

Awesome!!!

I'm not a big fan of this movie. I never saw it on DVD or anything else, but as far as the blu-ray, it's unbelievable. The PQ is perfect and the AQ is the best I've heard so far. They took full advantage of the 7.1 surround. It's about time someone did it right. This movie is demo worthy.

THE PUMPKIN KING.

I recently saw Nightmare Before Christma in theaters with a new print in 3-D and it did not look this good. I am not being biased because I previously loved the movie. It really do think that this Blu-Ray is one of the clearest ones I have seen. And the sound is thumpin. I went straight to the Oogie Boogie scene with the biggest bass and brightest colors in the movie. Amazing. You can actually see the texture in Jacks suit and Oogies skin. If you love this movie this was worth the $29.99 I paid.

Finally, a decent version of this movie!

Having suffered with the LaserDisc and DVD versions for years upon years (both of which seem to be the exact same in terms of sound and video quality), I am more than pleased with this Blu-ray version! I just can't stop purchasing this movie. It even looks a bit better than the 3D version released each year in theaters, which is available only in digital cinema. The colors seem closest to that version, though... without having to wear annoying glasses for gimmicky 3D. The sound has been completely remixed and the surrounds are much more aggressive than the previous DTS versions on LD and DVD. There is a lot of panned dialog (even panned to/from the surrounds) and it works extremely well on a good sound system. It sounded better than the 3D version, but then again that is likely because the auditorium I was in wasn't EQ'd very well (typical for Regal Cinemas).

I don't care about the extras... they are something I will watch once and never, ever again. Whoopdy doo. It also comes with a "digital" copy. Ummm... does that mean that the Blu-ray version isn't digital? It should be called a "portable copy", not a digital copy. Anyway that is another thing I will never use. I wish there was a bare-bones version without the "digital" copy and without the extras, but with just the movie with the same transfer for picture and sound... for less $$$ of course.

Disney also loves to cram their discs with tons of trailers at the beginning, and even pausing the disc brings up a graphic (which disappears after a few seconds). Disney seems to think we are unable to scan through the disc without graphical assistance. Either that or they are using these "features" of Blu-ray just for the sake of using them and for no other reason. Still, that is nitpicking and this disc is wholeheartedly recommended without hesitation to fans of this movie!!

One of the best blu-rays I own!

I can't believe the transfer quality! The amount of detail is spectacular. The colors jump off the screen as never before! The 7.1 TrueHD audio is just sublime!

This is a must own for any blu-ray or Disney fan!

Perfection!

I have to say that Iīm great Tim Burton fan. So I knew what to expect from this blu-ray. BUT..., it was even more that I expected!! TrueHD 7.1 sound work very very well. Every small detail can be heard and Danny Elfmanīs breathtaking compositions and singing sounds more brilliant than ever. This is propably best blu-ray soundtrack Iīve heard so far. Also picturequality contains so many small details, that every time I watch movie, I find some new details. Hopefully this kind of releases make big film company bosses to understand, how important it is to make good movies!!
If movie is as good enough, as this one is, it means also great financial benefit for the company even after 20 years of moviesīs premier. So let real artists make movies, not last action heroes. Thank you!

A lot of awesomeness

I used to think this movie was just okay. I dug the look, but the pacing and slow animation took me out of it. But it turns out, it wasn't the film's fault, but the old SD DVD's. On Blu, I loved the film, especially the pace and slow animation - I marvelled at it, absorbed myself in it. I have found that Blu often improves movies, but it's especially true for this one. It would be a waste not to buy this on Blu.

As for the extras, you get 2 amazingly awesome short films. Any fan of the 30's Frankenstein would love "Frankenweinie", and any fan of Vincent Price will love "Vincent" and all it's sly references to Price's films. I don't even know what other extras are on here, but I don't care - these are plenty enough to make this more than worthwhile. It's a bargain; just a great set.

Maybe it'll grow on me

I usaually preview a movie before purchase but in this case I loved Corpse Bride so much I just ordered it. I was disappoined in the story, a bit too negative for my taste, but I will say the blu-ray is technically very well done. I did enjoy it more the 2nd time so I'm hoping to gain more of an appreciation for it over time.

One of must own for blu-ray

The PQ of this BD probably the top 10 in Blu-ray. Excellent transfer the PQ look almost 3D alike especially at the end when snow falling.

The AQ is good, not whole a not of heavy bass since is Dolby, but it provide clean dialogue and is support 7.1!

The movie was pretty good, I was a bit scare when I first saw this film when I was around 10. I has to said is one of most scare film for PG at that time i seen, especially is by Disney too.

Nightmare Before Christmas

Movie (5):
I loved this movie when I first saw it. Is awesome, and absolutley creative. Good as a musical, good as a comedy, good as an animation movie. And despites of some little flaws it is an amazing achievment.

Video (5):
I was never so amazed with this film. It looks fantastic. Jack's clothing, Boogie's casino, doctor's Lab, Zero's Nose, all looks as never before. This film has some soft scenes, that's true, specially after Sally releases the fog. Since then, the video is actually softer than the rest. Still, between that mist, detail, color and textures are visible all arround. Very good. It is, at least for me, a refference catalog title, the film is 15 years old and still dazzles.

Audio (5):
Powerful sound, that's a fact. Sound effects are well presented, musical numbers roar, and even dialogues are very well heard.

Extras (3.5):
Complete enough. The poem by Christopher Lee is a wonderful addition. The ride of the park is good too. The behind the scenes documentary, in SD yes, but still is very complete. Both Burton's short are a good touch too (I fond Vincent a bit boring, though). But I was personally expecting more things. Nevertheless this sector is well filled.

Final (5):
This is worth everything. A visual wonder. An amazing movie. A film that posseses you from beigining to end. A very good Blu-ray

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas On Blu-Ray.

Well after owning this movie on VHS, Laserdisc, and DVD. I have watched Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas multiple times over the years and it has become one of my favourite movies of all time.

The Blu-Ray provides the best presentation of the movie on Home Video.

After comparing this Blu-Ray to the older Special Edition DVD, there are many improvements in the Picture/Sound quality. The Special Edition DVD featured every good transfer but it lacked Anamorphic WideScreen. It also contained an excellent collection of special features.

The Blu-Ray picture quality is beautiful, it is extremely colorful, the sharpness is excellent, and the detail is great.

The audio is excellent as well, I would have like to see the DTS audio option on the Blu-Ray.

It is nice to say that 90% of the special features from the Special Edition DVD were ported over to the Blu-Ray. The only feature missing from the Special Edition DVD was an Audio Commentary from Henry Selick.

The Blu-Ray looks and sounds better than its Collector's Edition DVD Counterpart.

I totally recommend this release. Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of the best movies ever made and sure is one of the best Blu-Rays out there.
